A Really Special Moment

"Robert and I love traditions, but we always try make them our own, too. Just like our design projects."

Apr 27, 2010

Hey everybody! Cortney here, and wanting to thank you all for so many amazing comments about the show, and thrilled that you all are enjoying watching it as much as we loved making it!

Tonight’s episode just underscores what lucky people we are! And how much we have to be thankful for!

From a design POV, we create a gym for developer (and friend!) Dave Barry, who is our biggest client, and while certainly things can get sticky with him (as it does with all clients!), he is amazing, and an inspiration to work with. And he has been so supportive of our work, giving us artistic freedom and paying us for what we love to do! It doesn’t get any better than that.

Letting us do our Sixx Design thing in the gym was a challenge. As you know, we love mixing vintage items with modern pieces, and repurposing a space that was mostly sitting empty. The space itself was a challenge—huge, awkward, with a really ugly kitchen that didn’t work, and to make the project more complicated, the budget was very small. We love a challenge, so we tackled it, and created a gym that really works well and looks fab. (Dave lends the gym to a number of charitable kids’ organizations and even to Olympic athletes!). Bob loved the results so much, he donated his entire sports bobble-head doll collection as part of the permanent décor of the gym! Dave was happy, and now we are working on a new project with him—our second New Jersey Shore hotel (Our first, Bungalow, opened last summer—you will see us create that hotel later in the season!)

You and your family are wonderful.

Hi From Georgia! (love that you are from here too) I love the show and find you so inspiring, not only from the design perspective but also how you manage work and family. Keep up the great work! I hope there will be a season 2!

Cortney, what a wonderful baptism. You and your large family fit perfectly together. Its just me and my son, but watching the baptism reminded me of ours. The priest was also Catholic and liberal. It was in Palm Springs CA and full of love and support for my sons life and future. Its nice to watch a Bravo show that shows team work rather than drama, fighting and just uglyness. I am a fan.

Well, you won me over tonight! I really didn't want to like your show, Courtney, but tonight, I did. As I watched, I found myself doing what I try to do in daily life: let the small things slide and focus on what's important. It worked. I love your family, I love the way you and Bob parent your children, and I thought that baby Major's baptism was one of the most moving things I've seen on television in a good long while. If you have a loving family, that's what matters, whether you're in a fabulous New York towhnouse, a ridiculous little matchbox in Detroit, or a tent somewhere in the wilderness. Thanks for making me remember that we are all so much richer than we sometimes imagine. The take home lesson for me: more gratitude, less judging. See you next week!

Major's Christening was great. He's such a doll. I loved this episode, but they need to show it more than twice on the first night! I love to see you all play with Major and I love, love, love, Five and Holly.

I would kill for that pink refrigerator you put in the gym. It was a perfect touch.

Blessings to your family.

Cortney!

Oh my gosh I just love you guys. You and your family are such a whopping breath of fresh air!! Cortney, first of all, I hope you realize that you are simply STUNNING. Your kindness, beauty and loving nature burst through the screen. :) In just a few episodes, I've already taken inspiration not just from your lifestyle and design aesthetic but also from your own personality, wardrobe and how you carry yourself.

Best wishes to you guys for continued health and happiness. I'm a new and probably lifelong fan!

Great job on the gym-- It must be very satisfying to have so much freedom in your design and to pursue it as you think best. I find your show inspiring-- it's a big life and you seem to love living it. Congrats on the gym, the show and this big beautiful life.

You and your family are just beyond words. God Bless you all and I look forward to this season and hopefully many more!

You are so beautiful! You're family is adorable, well adjusted and so funny. Love your show so much

LOVE your show.It is my new favorite show. You guys are awesome!!

I only have one child and sometimes wonder how to handle it. Then I see you juggling everything you do while being upbeat and positive, and you give me tremendous inspiration. It's so refreshing to watch a really good show that doesn't cater to a bunch of crazy drama.

You all are an amazing family. So much fun to watch. You're such a positive group of people. Your designs are amazing and fun. Can't wait for each weeks show. I really hope you don't get tired of the cameras and there are more seasons. Would just love to hang with you guys, you seem like fun relaxed people to be around. Keep having fun. I'm at Pier Village all the time...love the work on the Bungalow!

Hello,

Just letting you know that I adore your show....inspiring on many levels.......the kiddos, your design style, the sweet dynamic between the two of you......thank you for opening up your world.

Now on a selfish note...I'm an interior designer myself...where oh where are you finding all the awesome artwork? I can see there are a few discovered items that you have stumbled across at second hand stores, antique shops, auctions, etc...........I'm speaking more speciifically about the artwork for the walls....original paintings, prints, etc.....any galleries you want to mention or artists or websites??

Thank you!!

I absolutely love your show, your family and your design sense rock! I have a new baby, Stella, she is our first, your show has been inspiring that you can be sucessful with something you are passionate about and raise a family. Thanks! We are in FL, if you ever take the gang to disney world you should check out our city for vintage and thrift shops, lots of cool stuff.

Lucky you to find such a liberal priest to come to your home to conduct the baptism. Having had to go down the other road with my own kids it was wonderful to see such an intimate ceremony on your own turf. I absolutely loved how you had the best man carry Major around so that all of the guests could touch him and give him their own blessing - lovely, lovely tradition. Reminds me a little bit of part of the bar mitzvah ceremone - I just attended my first a few weeks ago. I continue to really enjoy you and Bob's creativity, energy, and laid back natures.

It's my new favorite show and I have never even looked at blogs on other shows before! I just love your design aesthetic and I love how you handle your large family with such ease and grace. You guys seem like people I would love to hang out with! I ran out to buy your book and I'm so inspired. Can't wait till Tuesday's to watch each episode. Thanks for being so authentic.

BRAVO to you and Kudos to Bravo for featuring you and your amazing family. You are all such a breath of fresh air and your love of family resonates in all you do. You demonstrate that you can be successful with integrity and with class. I love your style. I just ordered your book just to see pictures up close. You make me want more kids, we have 3 the ages of your first 4! Bless you. Give that snuggly baby boy a kiss from me!

Cortney~ My kids and I love watching your show!! It is so nice to see a "normal", "mainstream", and "hip" Catholic family portrayed in the media. I am so happy that my son (9) & daughter (6)can watch other Catholic kids live out their faith openly and proudly. Us Catholics have had to deal with our share of embarassments lately, and I hope this episode helps dispel any perpetuating sterotypes. BTW ~ I was baptized at home, too! My mom still has the silver bowl "font" that I was baptized in and it is so meaningful and special. I'm sure your kids will grow up feeling the same way. Congrats to you & Bob for your courage in raising a beautiful family of faith!

Hello from Hawaii.

just wanted to say that i LOVE the show. I was really trying not to get sucked into another Bravo show. but I'm so glad I did :-)

Bless you and you famiy!!!! Can't wait to see more!

I love the show. I also love your relationship. The children are adorable, each and every one of them. We need more television like this. It's so nice to see happy people. xo

Thanks Cortney to you and your family for bringing some fresh air to bravo TV. I'm sick of all the nasty drama being protrayed on TV and it's so refreshing to have a really great family with good values on the air. It's amazing how your family juggles daily challenges and you are truly an inspiration to us all.

Keep on doing your thing!

xo Ashley

I really love you and your kids and Bob, in every episode!!

I so excited to have people on tv who are like me, in so many ways!! People who have good taste and can dress. (and who are from the south!)YIPEEEE!!

But, I also really love all of YOU, as people!!!! I am so in love with your kids, that I want to adopt all 7 of them!! They all have adorable personalities, and are the cutest kids, I've ever seen!! I even enjoy how sweetly you and Bob treat them, and also how sweetly they treat each other. Five has stolen my heart. His hair is darling!!! In this episode, Breaker tries on a fedora at a vintage shop, and I think he looks very cute in it!

Also, this episode, there is a lot of vintage shop going, and that is another that we have in common. I love flea markets, vintage shops and thrift stores. It looks like NYC's items at those stores, are far better than they are here.

Another thing in this episode is the christening. Your cousin from Ala. said that she was raised southern baptist. I was too. So, I can relate to having been raised with xian traditions.

(And, you mentioned you are only 5'4in. I am only 4'11 in., myself, so I can relate. I can't reach anything.)

When I watch the show, I feel like I'm getting to interact with your life, as if I know you. Every time that there is something good that happens to you, I get really excited!!! I am saying, "Yea!" about it, from my couch!!! So, know that you have a BIG fan and supporter, when I watch your show!!! I love it so much that I even save it on my DVR and rewatch each episode.

I love everything about the show!!!!!

I LOVE watching your show! Your family is wonderful and seems so "normal". For having such a large family and a hectic work schedule every one of your children seems so well adjusted and down to earth! You guys seem like a family mine would hang out with. :) Keep up the great designs!!

i love your show, your design and your family. Major's baptism was really great, and it's so incredible that you were able to have it at your home. i, too, had issues trying to get my only son baptized in the church of my choice, so Robert's gift to you that day really made me all warm and fuzzy inside. i love that you embraced everyone with the event and can't wait to see what you come up with for next week!

Wow, what a standout addition to the Bravo line-up.

May you enjoy doing the show for a long time.

LOVE the show...and have a random question...in the scene where you are getting ready for the baptism - i love those plastic party cups. where did you get those? are they solo cups? love that they're plastic but in fun colors and cool shape.

thanks!

I was wondering if you could provide a source for the geometric wallpaper you guys installed in the bar area. I've been looking for something just like that forever!! Thanks.

I was wondering now that you have another "dream house" and the kids are getting older...will you now make a permanate home for them

Love the wallpaper in the gym. Where is it from??

So far so good. You have an amazing family and buisness. Enjoying you normalness.

I LOVE this show. See what happens when you love hard and live hard. You guys are so talented and amazing how you do it the all seven of your children around and not sheltered from experince life. I love all the family.

Courtney Love, love, love the show. I have 4 kids (2 boys and 2 girls....ages 13-6) Since I am a symmetrical kind of gal it worked out well.:) It is refreshing to see a family with lots of kids. I often think people look at us like we have a screw loose. My husband and I got a late start and I know if we were younger we would have had at least 6 of them....we are Catholic as well.:)

I love the design of your homes. I love to decorate and get ideas from varied sources and your homes do not disappoint. We are currently moving to Virginia from Baltimore to a home that was built in 1989. Unfortunately it still looks like 1989 inside. We have a lot of work to do...but I'm excited for the challenge.:) Take care and thanks for a great show.:) .

LOVE LOVE LOVE the show. Your entire family is such an inspiration. Congrats on your beautiful family and all your success.

Lauren

Thank you for making your show such a breath of fresh air!!! I love that even in these times you are a close-knit family full of love and great values; and as an Interior designer myself I commend your GREAT work!!

Keep up the good work! best wishes

I love the show and love watching your whole family dynamic! I'm a stay-at-home mom who knows how challenging it can be to keep up with only three, but you two have taken parenting to a whole different level! Your kids are amazing and they seem to peacefully interact, coexist, and roll with all the chaos and changes. Your are all very blessed!

I was diagnosed with cancer a couple years ago, bad thing yet I look back on it and maybe it was a good thing because it made me go over my life and reflect on the things that are important now that a couple years ago just seemed well.. things I selfishly did not think about. Family , kids, doing whats right realizing what I did wrong , things that I can't go back and change because its too late. You and your husband seem to be who i wanted to be just never was. I applaud you and your family because thats what its really all about in the end family and friends. I'm envious of the love you all share. In life its not how much you have on the outside its whats you have and share in your heart thats important. So god bless you and your family.

I love this show! I have you two on my DVR everytime I can't make it to see your shows! Your husband is a wonderful man and you do have a beautiful family! Wish we could be artsy in the remodeling dept. I can't wait to see what happens next! You are a wonderful mom and should be Very Proud and modest to know you have a blessed family!

Love the show! As a teacher, I especially love how connected you seem to be to your children, and how attentive you both are to them. How refreshing! And, BTW, Courtney, I was raised Southern Baptist and became a Roman Catholic, too!

Where do you get all your energy?!?! I love your family dynamic and wish you could bottle some of that energy and sell it cause I'd be first in line!! Your kids are so smart and great!! congradulations on a job well done!!

How do you stay so calm, or a there times that we don't see. To do what you do and raise 7 children, fascinating. I applaud you. So nice to see a show on Bravo were the people aren't always bickering.

Courtney

I think YOU are an amazing woman. With all the "activity going on around you, you still present yourself with charm and intelligence and grace. It makes me proud to be a woman to see you in action. I am sure your children will benefit from such a cool gutsy loving mother.

Bless you gal !!

Penny

Absolutely love your family. You remind us so much of ourselves. We are a family of 7. Thank you for helping to show that large families are actually, planned, wanted & fun!

I love Breaker's name & he's adorable(as are all your children),he looks like he's going to be the BREAK out star!

I'd love to learn about the beautiful garland that you used for the party! Did you make it? If so, how?

your family is great i come from a family of 9 brothers and sister and i loved it

god bless

Enjoy and love the show. What a great family. Your relationship together is wonderful. I hope you do many many more shows.

luck, no - strong work ethic, repect and love. your family has all three. i love watching your show, both your eye for design and adorable family are such a delight! thank you for sharing.

Hi Cortney,

Love the show and your family. I especially love the the way you dress. You look so comfy and stylish at the same time. Can you tell me where to find the lovely white top you were wearing while you were preparing the house for Major's baptism?

BTW, you might want to consider starting a retail website where you could sell things seen on your show. It could be things like the white blouse, or the cool necklace your husband bought you, or even the hat he bought your oldest boy, maybe chatchkas too. Wouldn't that be a great way to bring in even more money?

All the best, Sara

I love your designs and the fact that you re-use found items. So I was aghast when you destroyed the concrete and glass bar. It may not have been your cup of tea but someone else might have been able to use parts of it. Maybe take it back to the place you got the letters. Now it's probably in a landfill. I hate when TV shows get out the sledge hammers for ratings. It just makes a big mess that has to be cleaned up.
