Robert Novogratz

Bob tells you his flea market picks and the story behind all the kids' names!

on Apr 13, 20100

At close to 9 months pregnant, she decided to go to the Brooklyn flea market to find some cool pieces for the new pad...her philosophy is that no matter how long you are in a space, really make it your own. (Some of our favorite flea markets are the Brooklyn flea market, the rose bowl flea in Pasadena CA, the flea market in Nice, France, the Brimfield antique show in Mass, and some of the shops in Hudson, NY). During all of this we still had to complete our new home in lower Manhattan. Building is the most difficult thing that we do, more specifically, dealing with permits, codes, neighbors, contractors etc…not to mention the economy was getting worse every day. The one great part of our careers is getting to meet and work with creative and talented designers/artist etc. For the new building we decided to have artist/industrial designer Richard Woods incorporate beautifully painted boards on the facade of the house. This was one of the highlights of the entire process. Getting the boards up in one day was quite the task, but the end result was amazing and totally worth it. The episode wraps up as we are driving to the hospital, about to have our 7th child, and trying to think of names…we put a lot of thought into their names…

OUR SIXX KIDS NAMES...

1. Wolfgang (12) – named after Wolfgang Mozart (Novogratz is Austrian, as is Mozart)

2. Bellamy (11) – French name, meaning beautiful friend

3. Tallulah (11) – Cortney is from Georgia, very southern name, ie. Tallulah Bankhead

4. Breaker (9) – named after Harry Breaker Morant from the Australian movie Breaker Morant. He was a scholar, a poet, an opera singer, a soldier, and the best horseman in all of Australia (he broke all of the wild horses)

5. Five (4) - He was obviously our fifth child…

6. Holleder (4) – named after Don Holleder, an All American quarterback at West Point. He was killed in Vietnam in a very heroic act of saving his own men. He was loved by my Pops and all that new him. His guys nicknamed him Holly, and we did as well.

7. You’ll have to watch next week’s episode to find out…

CORTNEY WILL BE BLOGGING NEXT WEEK…!

I'm totally hooked on your show. I tape them so I can watch them over. Your design sense is beyond awesome.Everyone in the family adds their own special part that sets it aside from anything I've ever seen. It's so neat to get excited about a new series. This OR nurse from Texas can't wait for more. THANKS :)

Hi Robert,

I love your show and how much fun you must have daily! Wow my husband and myself raised 2 children ( well almost still in College) and it was tough...... Anyway, has anyone ever told you: You look EXACTLY like Muggs Mcginnis from the old "Bowery Boys" 1930's ish series. You even have the same "Class 3" bite and wear similar hats! Check it out.... Thanks for your talent and "quirkeyness"! It's refreshing for sure.

OK - I just love your family and your show. As a mom who also has 7 kids it's comforting to watch other big families. Your guys design sense is A-MA-ZING. SO, I had this idea for a show... how about you guys do a redesign for a family who also has 7 children and really need your help (paid for by Bravo of course)? I have no idea who that family might be (wink wink)but I'm sure I could help you figure that out. Wouldn't you just love to the challenge of making our 1800 sqft house more fun, functional and attractive (did I lose you at 1800?)? Anyways - so glad to see your amazing family having the chance to show the world we are not all weird. :)

I love following your creative design process through each featured project but very disappointed in seeing only a very brief look at the final result. I think the editing needs to be adjusted.

I'm a reality t.v. show buff and just love your new show. At first I thought "Oh gosh, another reality show", let me watch it and see if it's worth my time. As soon as I saw it I was hooked. I love your kids, they're all sooo different and very unique, right down to their names. (don't listen to the haters about Five's name, I think it's cool and different and fits him perfect) I admire the love I see between you and your wife, even with all the kids and your hectic life you're both so sweet together. Your kids are beautiful and your home designs are awesome. Keep up the good work, and hopefully we'll be able to keep up with your cool family for a long time. (Also love the new nanny, what a strong woman to not be scared away on the first day of the job) ha ha Also Happy Mother's Day to Cortney, she sure deserves it!!!!!!

was interested in your show until you had your children chant "Obama! Obama!" Ugh.

imagine some right-winger having their children chant "Bush! Bush!" around a picture of the former President.

way to confirm charges of liberal brainwashing!

"Five"? Seriously? I hope he doesn't have any issues growing up with all his siblings having meaningful names and himself stuck with just what number child he is.

I love your family and the show. Please keep it together with the family and don't let the fame end up in a broken home because you are so popular you think it will be better to move on to different partners.

I am praying you stay together through this TV fame.

As a former NYr (live in SE NC), totally homesick.. thanks.. love the design; comfort and esthetic... love the childrens' names too. Had 5 sons, born close together, and referred to them at times but the line-up. Even called them by the dog's name when I was a "wee bit put out". So no worries for Five, he'll be fine..surrounded by lots of fun and intelligent parenting, I think.. was a prisoner in my house and watched this by chance... I AM A FAN!

BTW, Miss Jeff and crew.... when will they return????

Cortney and Robert:

I absolutely Love, Love, Love your show... Your children are absolutely beautiful, love your traditions and your sense of style. I would truly like to be friends with you. When I watch your show it's crazy, I do not move.... I am completely into design and have been re-doing my kitchen I am looking for some french chairs (cheap that I can recover) I don't want them to match... I will be in New York the weekend of May 6th and I was wondering if there are some antique stores/flea markets you would recommend going to. I would really apreciate your recommendations...

I HATE reality shows....But I came upon yours one Saturday and was completely intrigued. First of all you actually DO and MAKE things. Not only that but you truly bring a fresh, and inspirational way of doing things in a way that I find utterly amazing. To have that many children, first of all, and they are really cool.. actually amazingly cool. They are getting that from somewhere and it has to be from their parents, and knowing that you not only love them individually, but allow them to express themselves and what they are doing it acceptable. RARE. I love to watch it. Also I love that they recognized Obama from the photo you hung on the wall. I will continue to watch your family as long as it is on the air.

It concerns me that every one of your children's names have a wonderful reference or meaning -- with the exception of Five, who is merely named for his place in the family. What if he had been the second or fourth, would his name be "Two" or "Four"?

I am a fan but do have some questions/comments. I don't know if you guys actually read these but here goes.....

I have been a successful and accomplished Entrepreneur and Business Consultant in every area for any industry out there. However, since the age of 8, I have been battling Rheumatoid Arthritis and other auto-immune diseases. At age 47, my ability to rally up or even to work full time for any of the major F500 companies I have worked for in the past is only a memory.

Now, I am fighting cancer, kidney failure, RA/FM/CFS, Degenerative Disk Disease and too much more for me to list. Due to my health, my living in places like NYC, Israel and Vegas has come to an end. After all these years of traveling, exploring, living, conquering and begin successful living in those places, I cannot seem to adjust to livening in Port Arthur, TX where the only delivery services possible is pizza. I desperately wish I could continue to create a charity, "Expressions: An Art Charity for the Masses, but I cannot do it alone.

Instead, I try to think of ways to better those around me. Going from living in a huge home (that I alone paid for) to being in a rent subsidized apartment gives me a front hand view on what this life entails.

The episode where you guys renovated a gym was impressive but all I can think of is how myself and those like me literally watch the apartment dumpster daily to see if someone, just as desperate as me, thrown out something, anything that we may be able to fix up and use in our apartment. Without exception, anything such as that will be snatched up within minutes of it being placed by or in the dumpster.

Having lived (and still wish I lived) in NYC, I know there are all kinds of charitable organizations that would love to come to take whatever you donate off your hands, including furniture. It was actually painful to watch the glass, cabinets and counter tops on the show being demolished, then seeing that it cost you guys $20,000 to do so. I have no doubt that many agencies for the poor and disabled (like myself) would be incredible blessed with that unit in tack. I know it is out of style and cheesy for today's world but I would give anything to have such a piece in my apartment. I know that groups such as Habitat for Humanity, organizations/companies building housing for those in need and many more would be delighted to come in and assist, if not completely do the work in taking that unit intact or in sections to their projects. I am too far from NYC to want any of these things for myself but I speak for those in NYC and around your area.

Just as you guys brilliantly utilize antique, novelty and other such stores to get your items needed, if you use those organizations to donate the material, that $20,000 could either be reduced by a considerable amount (giving more money to spend on other items) or even be able to get rid of it, intact, for free and for a charitable tax break.

One of my specialties is in ROI that requires extra creative ideas to boost the bottom line. I hope you guys would at least read this and possibly implement these thoughts in order to both benefit you guys but also benefit those unfortunate people in, the city where I left my heart, NYC and the surrounding areas.

Good Luck!

Debbie Black

Great new show! Just watched the latest episode and can't help wondering where in the world you got such an awesome bobblehead collection from the 1960's? It must've cost a fortune?! Love the gym design with all of the vintage touches. You make a great team - kids and all! I love your free spirit.

I think 9 by Design is the best reality show on tv. I think the Bob and Courtney are artists -- very hip, very visionary, very nice and very good parents. The kids are adorable and seem truly well-adjusted. It's a family I'd be proud to know. What they are doing with their house ideas is completely fresh and unique. I can't wait to see what they do next. Jerry

Well, I am eating crow here. When I first wrote a blog here to you after your first show aired, I criticized it. To be honest, I only watched the last 15 minutes of the show. Then the other night I watched it in it's entirety and then watched the second episode right after. I WAS WRONG! I should of never blogged on something I only saw 15 minutes of so I hope you can accept my apology because I DO love your show and your family. Cortney is a SAINT and I wish I was more like her - and I only have one child! After watching the first 2 episodes, I actually felt calmer and happier because she taught me to not sweat the small stuff - actually, don't even sweat the big stuff! I think, "how would Cortney handle this situation?" (I have a 13 year old daughter). So thank you Cortney for being an inspiration to me. I look forward to watching and re-watching your show - you NINE are DIVINE!!!

I love your show and you are a inspiration to me and my husband. Have you ever checked out New Bedford, Massachusetts? It is an old city famous for it's whaling history and was once a extremly wealthy city, there are definately tons of interesting builings and spaces for sure. A few years back New bedford was a struggling city but it is coming up now. Just had to suggest it. Keep up the good work!!

Bellamy is actually the title of a 19th century French novel from Maupassant. It's spelled "Bel ami" It's the story of a mediocre opportunist who makes it in the journalism world because he is handsome and a talented women writer falls in love with him and write for him. His nick name is "Bel ami" which means "handsome friend". I love the names you picked for your kids, and your daughter "Bellamy" is very very cute. They all are!

Robert and Cortney, you are such an adorable couple with a work ethic that comes from your hearts and souls. I'm curious though, why isn't there more physical display of affection between you two. Surely, your mutual attraction wasn't limited to 7 times! ;-)

Your show is by far the biggest hit for Bravo TV. Thank you for giving me inspiration to achieve what was once only in my dreams.

Bravo to BRAVO for this FABULOUS show-- I LOVE it and I'm totally addicted to it the way I'm addicted to Housewives of NYC !! Rob & Cortney are so hip, attractive and cool and I love their design aesthetic and the way they embrace their lives !! love the kids and their unusual names-- awesome !! their kids are so cool-- you just know they're going to grow up being equally cool, easygoing and possessing the same creative/ design vibe that their parents have.

note to BRAVO: 8 episodes with this fabulous family isn't enough-- WE NEED MORE !!! Rob & Cortney are rock stars, and you have a HUGE hit on your hands !!

note to Rob & Cortney: you guys are so cute together but (so far) we're not seeing you kiss, hold hands, etc. you have 7 kids so we know you like each other-- let's see it !! :-)

Nice show. I really don't care for reality shows especially with children for the fear of hearing that it wasn't really reality and the children were rented.

I'll continue to watch and wish you all the best of luck! Don't let us down, I'm not sure how either one of you would do on "Dancing with the Stars".

By the way, Courtney if you could just package some of that energy and stamina in a bottle send it my way. Love the work you both do. Gives me some hope when I look around my own home and want to be a little different.
