POST HOC, ERGO PROPTER HOC

Background
Personal
Deputy Communications Director Sam Seaborn unwittingly took home a beautiful (and likely very high-priced) call girl named Laurie. He slept with her, not knowing her line of work, but the next day he discovered they'd swapped pagers accidentally when he fielded a scheduling call from her "escort" service. Sam tried his best to keep the whole thing under wraps, knowing that the White House would be faced with serious damage control if news got out. During an elementary school tour of the White House, Sam innocently confessed his so-called crime to the tour group's teacher...who just happened to be Mallory O'Brien, daughter of President Bartlet's Chief of Staff Leo McGarry, who just happens to be Sam's boss.

Meanwhile, while everyone was looking, the President rode his bicycle into a tree, prompting a conversation about hiring a much-needed media director so that the public will stop making fun of the West Wing.
Political
White House diplomacy was put to the test when Josh Lyman — Chief of Staff Leo McGarry's senior deputy — let out a little of his idealistic New England impatience on Mary Marsh, a confrontational leader of the Christian Right. Tempers flew, and Josh — brilliant, savvy, and but not known for an excess of patience — insulted Ms. Marsh on national television, causing a mess that CJ Cregg, the President's agile press secretary, had to scramble to clean up. It's a good thing Josh had been with the President and Leo since back in the New Hampshire campaign days, because the president was asked by the Christian Right in no uncertain terms to fire Josh, and it was only the president's confidence in Josh's political ability — and ability to recover from the blunder — that saved Josh's job.

Synposis
Despite warnings from fellow office workers, infatuated White House staffer Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe) presses his luck when he continues to publicly pursue a high-priced call girl (guest star Lisa Edelstein) with whom he shared a night of passion. Press secretary C.J. Gregg (Allison Janney) tries to defuse a potentially nasty public clash between the President (Martin Sheen) and his willful Vice President (Tim Matheson) concerning the Veep's quotes about a bill favored by the chief executive. Exasperated political consultant Mandy Hampton (Moira Kelly) drowns her troubles when her only client ignores her advice and agrees to bottle up a key bill in committee that could have been costly for the President if put to a vote. The President forges a kinship with a young African-American Navy captain (guest star Reuben Santiago-Hudson) who's substituting for his regular White House physician - so much, in fact, that he asks him to assume the position on a full-time basis. Bradley Whitford and Richard Schiff also star.
