THE SHORT LIST

Background
Personal
Leo's wife Jenny has left him, ending twenty-eight years of marriage. Leo sought empathy from VP John Hoynes, a fellow recovering alcoholic. Hoynes told Leo about a safe, private AA meeting held for White House staffers who can't very well attend public meetings at their local church or high school. Since then, Leo has been a regular at the Thursday night "card game" in the Old Executive Office Building.
Political
The President continues to field accusations from liberal Democrats who say he's too middle-of-the-road; when he settled for a toothless gun control bill, it did nothing to strengthen his support among those on the left. Even within the West Wing, senior staffers wonder if they're not compromising a little too much in an effort to gain political points.

Synposis
When a Supreme Court justice retires, President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) has a golden opportunity to impact the court's composition by nominating a favorite judge (guest star Ken Howard) -- but when further study reveals the candidate's conflicting ideology and cloudy social affiliations, the President might change his mind and opt for another judge. In addition, a headline-seeking congressman (guest star Holmes Osborne) on the House Government Oversight Committee accuses the White House staff of substance abuse -- a dicey issue for one important member. John Spencer, Rob Lowe, Bradley Whitford, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, Moira Kelly and Dule Hill also star.
