Back before Bartlet ran for President, Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman worked on now-Vice President John Hoynes' Presidential campaign, quietly bemoaning the fact that Hoynes wasn't "the real thing." Deputy Communications Director Sam Seaborn was in New York at the time, selling his soul at a litigation firm, and Press Secretary CJ Cregg was in Los Angeles selling her soul at in a tinsletown PR firm. Meanwhile, Leo McGarry was in New Hampshire convincing then-Governor Jed Bartlet that they could make a successful bid for the White House.
Political
While President Bartlet and Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman undergo lifesaving surgery after taking bullets in the shooting attack at Rosslyn, the Secret Service and White House call out the National Guard for a massive manhunt to find the gunmen.

Synposis
In the two-hour season premiere of the record Emmy Award-winning drama, all the President's (Martin Sheen) men and women scramble in the chaotic wake of an assassination attempt that leaves some victims fighting for their lives. Meanwhile, as a manhunt continues, the wounded drift in and out of consciousness during surgery recalling how Bartlet's team came together during the dark months of his longshot primary campaign. Elsewhere, the press department is hounded by the media for details of the shooting while a military crisis looms in Iraq. Rob Lowe, Bradley Whitford, John Spencer, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, Dule Hill and Janel Moloney also star.
