Personal
At the President's request, Leo called in Ainsley Hayes — a Republican political analyst who made waves in the West Wing when she humiliated Sam in a point-counterpoint television program — to offer her a job as Associate White House counsel under the very liberal Senior White House Counsel Lionel Tribbey. Ainsley at first refused — saying she didn't want to work in a White House run by the Democratic Party whose beliefs she abhorred. Later, however, when she saw Bartlet and his staff step in to honorably protect African President Nimbala, she realized they were statesmen and patriots, and that her duty as an American compelled her to serve even if her views were dramatically different.
After undergoing twelve hours of surgery for the near-fatal gunshot wound he received at the President's Town Hall meeting in Rosslyn, Josh has been slowly recovering at home in bed.

Political
Toby continues to look for ways to retaliate against the White Supremacy hate groups behind the attack on the President and his staff in Rosslyn. At this point, Toby's about ready to throw civil liberties out the window and subpoena member lists of all organizations suspected to be affiliated with the KKK.

President Bartlet's (Martin Sheen) controversial -- and conservative -- new choice for associate White House counsel (guest star Emily Procter) has rough sledding on her first day when she suffers the wrath of her hostile boss (Emmy-winning guest star John Larroquette, "Night Court," "The Practice"), gets a chilly reception from her co-workers and is humiliated by two other staffers (guest stars Steven Flynn and Paul Perri). Also, when Josh's (Bradley Whitford) insurance company turns down his claim for his recent life-saving medical bills, Sam (Rob Lowe) tries to convince him to sue the people who shot him. In addition, C.J. (Emmy winner Allison Janney) tries to shame an outspoken general (guest star Tom Bower), who is critical of the President, into meeting with her. John Spencer, Richard Schiff, Dule Hill and Janel Moloney also star. Stockard Channing guest-stars. TV-14
