Personal
When Bartlet announced he was finally ready to seek a replacement for Mrs. Landingham as his secretary, Charlie immediately went to Debbie Fiderer, the woman who had hand-picked Charlie for the job as personal aide to the President. By recommending Charlie for the job, Debbie prevented the nephew of her department head from having the position — an action cost her when the department head fired her. Still, Charlie believed Debbie was the best choice for Mrs. Landingham's job, and eventually was able to get Bartlet to agree to hire her.

Political
The Presidential race between Bartlet and Republican Florida Governor Ritchie heats up when a third-party candidate — Congressman Stackhouse — decides to run on an independent ticket in an effort to raise issues that might otherwise not be addressed. The White House staff respects Stackhouse's decision, though the introduction of a third-party candidate threatens to do more harm to Bartlet than to Ritchie.

The President's (Martin Sheen) team reacts to the ongoing inquiry into its pre-meditated Qumari assassination by lawyering up as they gingerly approach Leo's (John Spencer) lawyer (guest star Joanna Gleason) while a key judicial ruling on presidential third-party candiates throws a monkeywrench into the campaign. Elsewhere, Sam (Rob Lowe), Toby (Richard Schiff) and Josh (Bradley Whitford) hatch a radical new idea to pay for college education; and the approval process of executive secretary-to-be Deborah Fiderer (Lily Tomlin) hits a snag when new evidence is uncovered. Allison Janney, Dule Hill and Janel Moloney also star. TV-PG
