It seems that Ibiza, once a can't-miss celebrity playground, is pretty much over. At least, that is, for the A-list types we like to see on the front page of the gossip mags.
Once a spot where celebrities went to party and be photographed, that has changed a lot in recent years. Instead, it has become more of an exclusive spot (a quality also loved by the Hollywood elite!) where high-profile types can go and enjoy a quiet getaway. Shakira and Gerard Pique have had an apartment there since 2013, and Italian motorcycle racer Valentino Rossi likes to jet over to relax at his villa.
“Ibiza isn't over for the non-celebs and party crowd — for the celebs, pretty much!" says travel expert Stefanie Michaels of Adventure Girl. "After all, they do want exclusivity and places [where] they can control the paparazzi. It's what happened to St. Bart's several years ago, too. They're heading to more far-flung places like Vietnam and Bali. And for Europe, Italy and Greece — and supermodels still love St. Tropez."
Paris Hilton, of course, still is there for all the partying: She flies to Ibiza weekly for a DJ residency at Amnesia. However, Hilton may be holding onto a dream now gone: Space Ibiza — one of the biggest clubs on the island — has just announced it is shutting down.
This summer, the global travel market has shifted to countries such as Manila, Mexico City, and Lima, due to a decrease in airfare costs and accessibility to these warm weather destinations. “The overall cities seeing the greatest increase in travel in 2016 compared to last year include: Manila (up 43 percent), Cancun (up 26 percent), Mexico City (up 46 percent), Bangkok (up 78 percent) and Beirut (up 79 percent),” says Tom Spagnola of CheapOair.com. “Travelers heading to Europe this summer are trying new destinations. The countries that have seen the highest increase in 2016, compared to last year include Portugal, Albania, Ukraine, Hungary, and Bosnia." He also said that international airfare is down across the board. "All of the global destination countries with the greatest number of bookings have seen airfare decreases this year: Mexico, Philippines, India, China, and Dominican Republic," says Spagnola.
So, ultimately: Sorry, gang. For reasons both trend- and logistics-related, Ibiza is so last year for the jet set en masse.
However, for those looking for a quieter, more intimate experience (read: exclusive), it’s still very much a thing.
“I think for a while Ibiza could definitely be considered over, but recently I know a lot of the It-girls and fashion bloggers are traveling and partying in Ibiza," says Chic Sketch creator Emily Brickel Edelson, a published fashion illustrator, author and entrepreneur, who travels frequently in the name of fashion and business. "I think it is being rediscovered for their intimate parties and V.I.P. treatment. Sure you can always find yourself in the middle of a huge day-time booze fest concert on the beach — but now there is another layer to it."
