We Are Family

Shawn comments on Bethenny's breakdown and the importance of a good support system.

Apr 15, 2011

Between watching my webisode this week and watching this episode of Bethenny Ever After, both came back to one thing -- family.

In the webisode my sister came to visit Michael and I for our eighth anniversary. I was super excited because she hadn't been to NYC in over two years, and the last trip was with the entire family, our parents, her kids, and husband. This time it was just her, and I was looking forward to some quality time where we could catch up on each other's lives. It's not that we don't see each other during holidays or in between, but we both lead very busy and very different lives. She's a mom to two beautiful teenage girls and a wife to a fabulous guy. Between the four of them, they are running from this sports practice, that dance recital, or to a school meeting. And Michael and I are usually busy planning events, going out to dinner with clients, or attending industry cocktail parties. As a result we don't speak very much. . .and it's not for wanting to, it's just we get wrapped up in our own lives that are miles apart.

My sister and I grew up in a typical small town middle class American family. We were super lucky we had two parents that loved us and gave us everything they could. And although we fought (what siblings don't?), we loved each other and as the years passed we grew closer. We became friends. My mother and father used to say, "When we're gone, it just going to be the two of you," and that's something we've never forgotten.

My sister and I joke that she is garage sales, nachos, and beer, and I'm Barney's, caviar, and champagne -- and nothing could be more accurate! Getting our nails done that day was exactly what I needed. I needed to reconnect, touch base, laugh, cry, and get back in touch with my family. I hate to think of the day when my parents are gone, but when that day comes I know even though we are different, I will still have my sister and a friend -- and someone I can get my nails done with.

Very sweet blog....family is what it is all about, and sometimes people need to be reminded of that! You did a nice job of doing that....I am off to hug my kids and call my parents!!

Shawn I just love to watch you - you seem like such a great person. Congratulations to you and Michael on your anniversary. I wish you all the best.

You are adorable! You make me laugh, you are so funny! You are also very talented and your kindness and caring shine through!

Congratulations to you and Michael on your eighth anniversary. My husband and I will be celebrating seven years next month. We banter back and forth like you and Michael so I can completely relate to you saying it's the way you show your love.

More Shawn please! Bravo, are you listening?

You are an absolute gem all around. I loved the webisode with your wonderful sister. I love how unpretentious you both seem. You have a gift in your wonderful ability to produce such fantastic events. Your blog is a tremendous contribution to Bethenny's show and I hope you keep it up.

Hi Shaun, I really like you and would love for Bravo to have a party planning reality show. The have one for real estate, preganancy, matchmaking. Why not event planning? It's nice to hear you're in a loving committed relationship. Best wishes to you your loving family, and your event planning business.

Shawn- Please get your own show! I would love to be your Julie..

Shawn I think you're cool and I love seeing you on the show. Bethenny's wedding, baby shower, and her birthday party were beautiful planned events. I can see you with your own show.
