We Are Family

Shawn comments on Bethenny's breakdown and the importance of a good support system.

Between watching my webisode this week and watching this episode of Bethenny Ever After, both came back to one thing -- family.

In the webisode my sister came to visit Michael and I for our eighth anniversary. I was super excited because she hadn't been to NYC in over two years, and the last trip was with the entire family, our parents, her kids, and husband. This time it was just her, and I was looking forward to some quality time where we could catch up on each other's lives. It's not that we don't see each other during holidays or in between, but we both lead very busy and very different lives. She's a mom to two beautiful teenage girls and a wife to a fabulous guy. Between the four of them, they are running from this sports practice, that dance recital, or to a school meeting. And Michael and I are usually busy planning events, going out to dinner with clients, or attending industry cocktail parties. As a result we don't speak very much. . .and it's not for wanting to, it's just we get wrapped up in our own lives that are miles apart.

My sister and I grew up in a typical small town middle class American family. We were super lucky we had two parents that loved us and gave us everything they could. And although we fought (what siblings don't?), we loved each other and as the years passed we grew closer. We became friends. My mother and father used to say, "When we're gone, it just going to be the two of you," and that's something we've never forgotten.

My sister and I joke that she is garage sales, nachos, and beer, and I'm Barney's, caviar, and champagne -- and nothing could be more accurate! Getting our nails done that day was exactly what I needed. I needed to reconnect, touch base, laugh, cry, and get back in touch with my family. I hate to think of the day when my parents are gone, but when that day comes I know even though we are different, I will still have my sister and a friend -- and someone I can get my nails done with.

In this week's episode of Bethenny Ever After I give her a ton of credit for all she took on. And when she has a free moment I'd love for her to teach me to juggle because she it has it down to. . .dare is say. . .perfection? My father always used to say, "You're not a failure if you put a 100 percent into what you're doing." Bethenny does just that. She puts a 100 percent into everything she does and as a result she's successful. I think she did an amazing job on Skating with the Stars, far better than I could have done! Honestly, I sometimes think Bethenny is a machine. She goes and goes and goes. . .but you know what we all hit a wall and when we take on too much -- we snap.

It happens to me, it happens to Michael, it happens to all of us. It just so happens Bethenny snapped on Thanksgiving. I really felt for Julie when the oven wasn't working. Julie works hard, she a super sweet person, and she puts in 100 percent to make sure Bethenny's life runs perfectly -- or as perfectly as it can. This was the one moment things weren't perfect. The oven didn't work, and Julie couldn't do anything to fix it. Jake was right, it wasn't a big deal. He's a good guy and he keeps life in perspective. I always say we're not curing cancer and saving puppies in Rwanda.

All in all when the dust settled they had a great Thanksgiving. Bethenny was with the people who are important to her -- the people who love, support, and wish her nothing but success. She was with family. It's nice when it all comes back to family. I know I'm thankful for mine. I'm also thankful to all of you for your love, support and kind words over the past two seasons.

When I took Bethenny on as a client (or vice versa) I had no idea what a ride I was in for. My life and career have completely changed for the better, and it's in part because of you and the love you send my way. So thank you to each and every one of you!!

Until next time. . .Cheers!
