Now on to the excitement of the night … last night I had the pleasure of co-hosting the TRESemme Project Runway Finale party with Tim Gunn. As they say, a picture (or video) is worth a thousand words so check them out and let them speak for themselves, at TRESemme.com.
And before I sign off for the year, I want to thank all of you for your continued support. All the best!
The "final four," designers were Michael, Laura, Uli, and Jeffrey. And, because it was the last shoot, they threw the designers for a loop and paired them with different models than they were used to working with. How nervewracking! And, to make it even more stressful, the designers were being judged for a spot on the Elle First Look Page. That is much needed publicity for a budding designer!
The Elle photographers were at the salon to take some still photos of the TRESemme team and me interacting with the models. It's hard to work with all of those cameras and extra people around BUT I love the drama!
As I...]]>
The Challenge, to create a design made out of black and white, was a very interesting one. I couldn’t wait to see what these creative minds would come up with as they could go in any direction with “their look” as long as it was black and white. The vibe on the set was so intense with each of the designers flitting about making sure every seam was perfect on their black and white creations.
Things started off with a bit of a misunderstanding at the TRESemme salon with a pouting Camilla on the waiting room sofa. I love having this gregarious model in my chair, chatting away with her about her 10 plus brothers and sisters. But, she spends the least time in the TRESemmé hair salon since she has...]]>
So, even though the designers were judged on their Couture creations in the City of Lights, they had to re-show here in New York. In the end, the scores from both runway showings were tallied up to determine the winner. I thought that this was a very interesting concept because the designers had the oppportunity to fix what wasn't working in their original design in Paris and re-fit their vision for the judges in New York. You rarely have the opportunity to do that as a designer ... and it can truly help in...]]>
Michael's seersucker cargo pants and simple white shirt weren't surprising to me -- he always looks dapper, with a trendy edge. Laura created a matte jersey nude wrap dress with a waist details that could be tied in different ways to create different looks. Again, to me this was reflective of her style. As we know, the fascinating Laura Bennett has five kids -- so her dresses' ability to be tied in different ways certainly reflects her ability to juggle many things!
Hair today was a snap, as most of the female designers wanted to have a simple blowout. I...]]>
And for all of the doubters, the hair in the ad is 100% authentic Nazri! I would definitely not hide her beautiful, textured hair with a wig. For both the Runway look and for the Elle magazine ad, I used the same products on Nazri's hair. These were TRESemme Instant Heat Tamer...]]>
The models had a difficult time maneuvering around, as most of the dresses were made of something very delicate! Jeffrey's dress was made out of newspaper and I was fearful that it would rip at any moment! However, it was made a bit sturdier when he painted it lime green and blue. The dress that Amanda was wearing was made of that gift wrap cellophane packing paper, so it crinkled every time she moved.
Most of the models were not allowed to sit at all untill after the judging. They were very uncomfortable and this led to alot of complaining and at times, bickering! The girls kept trying to sit down anyway and every time I heard a dress crinkle, I held my breath for fear that disaster had struck!
It was quite a task to style the model's hair. We had...]]>
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of telling each of the designers and models about this unique challenge and fabulous prize.
The challenge is to transform the models into modern interpretations of famous style icons. The winning designer is not only guaranteed to stay in the competition (which is getting more fierce by the day), but the winning designer's look AND their model will be featured in a TRESemme advertisement in Elle magazine (the October issue)!
This is how the challenge worked? The models were able to pick the icon that they would later portray. I was anxious that some of the models would choose an icon that simply didn't go with their look, or -- more importantly -- their hair type. The models got to choose from the likes of style icons such as Jackie O., Cher, Diana Ross,...]]>
Luckily, once each team decided on their design, one representative was sent to voice their team's hair vision. Robert made me laugh out loud when he directed me to transform redheaded Amanda into a sexy flight attendant lusting after her captain! "Think of Catherine Deneuve in Belle du Jour," he said, and I instantly knew that he wanted height and volume. It was no easy feat transforming Amanda, as she has baby-fine hair that likes to stay close to her head, but with the help of TRESemme Big Boost Root Lift...]]>
Upon the arrival of our canine friends, some of the production crew asked if I would be able to groom the dogs with MY personal hairbrushes. I declined, although with some hesitation as I am a huge dog lover. (I have two miniature Yorkies at home, Felix and Flynn, who are like my children.) But, with some of my brushes costing as much as $100 dollars, I knew I had to say no.
All of the designers chose to design dresses for their models and furry...]]>
