Photoblog: Top Chef

Tonight is an encore presentation of the critically acclaimed Thanksgiving episode of Top Chef, so I thought it would be appropriate to throw some fresh Chef content out there in the form of some random pix I took in the first couple days of shooting.

Padma and I pretend to be a supercouple. There is speculation (among no one) that another month away from Mr. Rushdie would've made Padma forget him altogether and would've turned me straight, but I don't think Mr. R. is forgettable and I don't think there's a chance of me taking the straight road.

By the way, I for one am getting a little tired of the griping about Padma's clothes being inappropriate for the kitchen. We've got one of the few models who has written a cookbook and can speak with authority about food, so why not make the best of both situations!? Being Jewish, I was raised to believe that models who know about food should look as white-hot as possible while tasting and discussing food. Thus, I am hereby putting it out there that anyone who thinks Padma looks inappropriate just might be cloaking some form of anti-semitism in their comments and might want to look within instead of at Padma. By the way, there is a bikini top in next week's episode, which I was consulted about in advance and wholeheartedly approved. I'm just warning everybody. Change the channel if offended!

while I'm in despair that there is not a new Top Chef tonight, I'm glad to finally know for sure that Gail Simmons has legs.

I should think not!
Very funny!

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the pictures. I would assume you were joking about the Jewish comments. I didn't know Padma was Jewish, and I'm still annoyed by her kitchen attire. I think she is beautiful and a good host, but, as so many bloggers/viewers have expressed - I have no desire to see so much skin in the kitchen. To me, the skimpy clothes cheapen the show some and cheapen Padma’s image as well. Too bad - this once serious and very entertaining show is going down the tubes fast with the poor choices of contestants this season (at least half shouldn't even be there), poor decisions (i.e. Betty not sent home after breaking the rules), way too much winning and drama from the chefs (again poor contestant choices contributing to this - where are the professionals?) and the lack of creativity by most of the contestants so far, as well as other issues which are collectively proving the rule that sequels are rarely as good as the original. Project Runway is one great exception, as that show seems to be getting better and better with each new season.

Love all the remarks about Marcel and various cartoon and movie characters in various blogs. Bourdain called him Astro Boy and wasn't his "if Betty Crocker and Charles Manson had a love child and he was cooking for me" also about Marcel at the judges' table? Have to watch the replay tonight. To me, take Kayne Gillaspie Project Runway season 3 and add Marcel from Top Chef 2 and you have the villain from The Incredibles. I'm also tired about many of the nasty remarks about Padma, which are not just about her clothing because the remarks seem at times to have a racist undertone and so seem to be aimed at the differences in culture and attitude. Legitimate complaints are not bad to read, but prejudice angers me.

I hope your comment, regarding the masked anti-semitism displayed by those who criticise Padma's appearance on the show, is meant to be humorous. It isn't at all humorous, mind you, but it would be even less amusing were it not meant in jest. It would, in fact, simply be sad.

I agree with the previous comments about your remarks. They are as inappropriate as Padma's clothes. Who knew or cared that she is jewish or a model, tall ,or green. It is once again the producers who are ruining a good thing. Bad enough you insult us but then to keep Betty on after she broke the rules and then not even show an episode, well it is the beginning of the end. Too bad 'cause you had a good thing going.

Why the rerun...I don't remember any ads that this week was a repeat broadcast...I was really disappointed!

Naomi wrote:

I agree with the previous poster who hopes that your comments about those who disagree with the clothing choices of Padma are racist thinkers is just plain sad. I truly hope that you are joking. I wouldn't care what the color of skin the person had, nor their religion or ethnicity. Poor taste is poor taste. It is an equal opportunity employer.

Andy, I'm Jewish and just don't get your remark. I have one word for you: shetl. In case your parents never taught you, that's the deliberately unflattering wig (often made of straw) that Orthodox women were required to wear after getting married so they wouldn't be attractive to other men.

I for one do not pay much attention to what the host is wearing, I would much prefer to see the head judge (Tom) in skimpy clothing. Love the hot pics of you Andy. Enjoy the holidays.

I find your comments regarding the masked anti-semitism displayed by those who criticize Padma's appearance on the show to be offensive. Yes, I for one also find some of her clothes to be inappropriate but I attribute this to the fashion department’s stupidity. Unlike other I do not see any signs that you meant in jest, you were clearly serious, and I for one hope the outraged fan picket, write BRAVO and you lose you job over this stupid statement. Your attitude is a good example of why the show this year stinks. Could it be that the people making decisions at this year TOP CHEF are racist idiots? Andy your comment clearly shows that this is possible. Clean up your act, and in the words of Tom C… Fix the problem!!!!

Mrs. Joel was the better dresser. Padma has the more mobile\expressive face. Neither have played the pivotal role that Heidi Klum has been given in Project Runway.

If Padma is so smart and talented and knowledgeable, then why haven't the TC2 producers given her more responsibility? She merely parrots a few scripted lines as far as I can tell. Why isn't she in the kitchen overseeing the chefs, instead of Tom C. who looks woefully miserable in the role?

I'm a TC2 fan and I watch the show religiously. So take my critique (not unjustified criticisms) to heart. Padma in a bikini top? I shudder. I hope you've put Gail in one and Tom in a speedo, else this smacks of a rather calculated and desperate move to garner ratings.

I also wonder about the boast that the Thanksgiving Episode is "critically acclaimed." The viewers felt gipped when five chefs were given immunity all at once. And the dinner itself was pedestrian. Even the winner could only come up with an excellent version of a traditional soup.

Anthony Boudrain's comments were hysterical. Tell you what. Stick him in Padma's and Mrs. Joel's place, though I doubt he'd look smashing in a bikini top.

I am rather curious to see if you will post my comments. Oh, I checked the spelling and grammer more closely in this comment, which is why I am resending it.

Sheeeeeeeeez Andy!

I had not even thought to write you about her clothing until you posted that. But I think you miss what the problem with it is...it's distracting. She doesn't blend in...it makes her 'steal' the sceen. It is rather annoying. It takes the focus off the food and the chefs.

And yes. She is beautiful and smart. But...It's kind of like a person with 23 facial piercings, lizard eye contacts and other body art... you don't always catch every word they are saying to you when you address them face to face.

I thought your comments were funny but I do agree with people who offer suggestions to make the show better. The Tim Gunn mentoring concept would be good as well as a hostess that has more dramatic potential. I don't think being gorgeous has to be a criterion for being a cooking show host. As you can see from reading the blog responses, the viewers of the show demonstrate high native intelligence. They are looking for substance, have a keen sense of justice, see the moral issues involved, and are alarmed by deficient social skills.

Maybe Reality Show and substance are mutually exclusive and I am intellectualising what is meant to be entertainment. And it is entertaining!

That is why I was so disappointed at the no-show this Wednesday night, with no previous announcement. This happened with Project Runway too, with the end of the show describing what will come next week, and then just showing a re-run. I don't understand why you just couldn't proceed with the next show instead of tricking the audience like this.

I believe this show is multifaceted and Padma in good looking fashionable clothes, no matter how skimpy, are part of the appeal. I found I was disappointed when she donned comfy jeans and t-shirt. Admittedly, she looks great no matter what she wears.
Yes, people expect the judges to dress differently than the chef's. How would it look if the judges on Project Runway wore unattractive clothing?
Keep up the good work, keep the episodes coming! I'm looking forward to the chefs stepping it up and really showing us some creativity. I wish the producers would give them more time to plan, shop and work. The results might be more inspiring.

Thank you.

Andy - thanks for sharing the pictures. I just have a quick question about the Thanksgiving episode. Why have Chef Colicchio and others make such an effort to pretend that it was Thanksgiving Week? Loyal viewers (and probably even casual viewers) understand the show is taped well in advance, with a nod towards the season/schedule of air dates. I'm just curious why the producers (or someone else) elected to direct the participants to fake that it wasn't August, when just having them say, "As you know, we tape this a bit in advance of the air date, and this challenge will first air at this time on the calendar, so with a wink and nod towards that ... "

Otherwise, love the show. (Have lost much respect for Betty though, my original favorite cheftestant. Making me defend Marcel was quite the achievement.)

Stella

Andy, I've enjoyed reading alll your blogs about Top Chef; I read all of the TC blogs because there are a lot of different points of view. I have no complaints about the show. There is certainly more drama this season, but Project Runway had more drama for season 3 than season 2 (I think the season 2 cast was able to chill out more partly because of Santino's funny Tim Gunn impressions). I think it is either just a coincidence that these two shows have had ultra-dramatic seasons, or maybe the competitors for TC season 2 saw how Project Runway season 3 went and decided to wear their hearts on their sleeves as well, so to speak.
I think the different blogs are important because when taken together, they present a cohesive picture of the competitors and, even though the different bloggers have different opinions about things, it still gives the viewers a look at the show from a perspective we can't get from just watching the show itself.
By the way, is Top Chef ever going to be released on DVD? I would have loved to get season 1 for my mother for Christmas; she watches every episode of either season anytime it is on! Project Runway has seasons 1 and 2 on DVD, although I am surprised season 3 is not out yet (maybe it takes a while to put together?), although I'm sure it will be eventually. But, PLEASE, put Top Chef out on DVD, and include some extra footage, especially extended scenes of the judges discussions when they are debating the winner and loser of each elimination challenge.

I think it sucks that SAM didn't win. He is a much better chef than Marcel. Marcel is rude and obnoxious. He never gave any of the other chefs any respect. He treated everyone in the kitchen like crap, and that is not the attitude of a TOP Chef. Elia was a better chef than Marcel will ever be.

I can't tell you how totally pissed off I am that Sam and Elia were eliminated today.

Thank you
T.

Your choice in your Top Chef is somewhat to my amazement.
For Cliff and Sam would have been my choice until elimination.

You eliminated Cliff because of his misbehavior, what do you call with all the foul language input by other contestants. Not bodily harm, but daggers were being thrown.

I would have done more to Marcel then shaving his head. What a sarcastic, conniving, smart mouth he is and you call him a Top Chef.

If you thought to keep the ratings of this production going by keeping Marcel, you are truely wrong. I watched the shows, but will not watch again . I have seen enough.

I was raised on a Cotton Farm in Texas and sometimes when friends came over the only food we had was a fresh loaf of homemade bread, butter, jelly and a cup of coffee.

You asked your contestants what or where they had there very best meal, I read their comments.

Now I would like to tell you my favorite meal. After Mass my Mom would go into the chicken yard and kill two fryers. Nothing like fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans or fresh field corn and homemade rolls.

I just wonder why your show was based on famous chefs and the rich and famous. Do you not think others that watch your show still remember home cooked meals.

I would like to have seen a challenge of just a basic home cooked meal. Not leftovers from animals or foul that your contestants were not sure how to cook.

I love to cook and have placed a meal on the table that even Top Chefs would enjoy.
