Last night was the big NYC premiere of "Hairspray", the movie of the musical. Beyond being a superfan of the 80s original movie, I am oddly emotionally close to the musical, having dated someone from its original cast. I've seen - and loved - the show a multitude of times and was a veritable stage door Johnny. I was the guy who snuck in the theater three or four times a week at 10:33 PM, standing in the back watching my BF try to "Stop the Beat". (He never could stop that beat. Ya can't.)
So there are all sorts of relationship things tied into this show for me, and I know that sounds pretty queer. With a capital Q. It's true though.
I had been excited, yet apprehensive, about seeing the movie. I knew I was either going to be melancholy or flying. I wanted the movie to have every bit of the joy that I had experienced so many times in the theater. I got nervous a couple months ago when I saw the Oprah "Hairspray" episode. Something about it seemed weird to me, and then the trailer I saw was all "in a town where..." - I was worried.

Nobody can compare to Kerry Butler's Penny Pingleton. She stole practically EVERY scene she was in (the wandering around during I Can Hear the Bells was my favorite). Can't wait to see Xanadu.
Do you have the choreography to YCSTB memorized after seeing it 10 gizillion times? Andy Cohen dances! Now THAT would be entertaining to see.

I agree with you Andy, this movie was fantastic! I loved Chicago and Dreamgirls but I loved this film even more! I was a little apprehensive that the singing might seem out of place but it all blended naturally. The energy of the cast kept the film from becoming boring. Travolta was absolutely lovable. I wanted to hug Edna Turnblad (and you couldn't get me to hug John Travolta). Nikki was awesome. I'm glad the members of the original Broadway cast were invited and involved in the premiere. It's so nice of the producing team to involve people from the film and show in this endeavor (Harvey's voice cameos in the soundtrack recording)

Andy, can't agree with you more about the movie Hairspray! Saw a screening of it last week in L.A. and we all thought it will be bigger than Dreamgirls! Loved the casting and the music. Cant wait to see it again.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the movie as much as I did.
And please, for the love of musicals, go see High School Musical before the sequel comes out.
P.S. It's Zac Efron, not Ephron. :P
