Manhattan Meander

March 31, 2008

It is so great to be back in Manhattan on the brink of Spring, and yesterday was one of those perfect weekend days that make you glad to be in NYC.

I started my day at Florent which is one of my weekend compulsions; if I am in town, I am there for breakfast. Unfortunately come June I will be like Howie Mandel without his Purel when Florent shuts down for good due to a greedy landlord-type sitch. Bah Humbug and how sad that Florent himself is one of the reasons the MeatPacking district is what it is, and is able to demand high rents. I prefer the Meatpacking District as I found it when I moved to Horatio Street in '92: full of rats and trannies and Florent.

Anyway I had a lovely breakfast at the counter reading the papers. I was pleased to see one of America's great authors back where she belongs, at the top of the New York Times Nonfiction Bestseller List. I am speaking, of course, of Valerie Bertinelli, folks. I freaking love it that her book is numero uno on NYT. Will Condoleezza's book be as successful? (Poor Condy.)

From Florent I jammed down to Soho and UNIQLO, that fantastic Japanese emporium of supercheap clothes that you don't need and might never wear. I met Graciela and Amanda and bought four things that may never be on my back but I got a little high from the purchase so it seemed worth it. And clean. Amanda bought a superchic size 0 trenchcoat. Dr. Baten is a size zero... AND she's the shrink to the stars. What more could a gal want?

I knew Dr. Baten in college before she was shrink to the stars.
Back then she was a minus 5. Florent closing is tragedy. Remember that Spanish seafood restaurant around the corner? I miss '92 too Andy.

What timing ... The day I read your blog my mom returned home from her travels in Japan & presented my daughter with a UNIQLO shirt (which she loves.) This said mom was a wizard of macrame when we were little and used to macrame similar wall hangings like the lovely goldfish planter. I'll show her the picture and see if my mommy can make one for you. Only for you, darling Andy.

Aww, Andy! Come the end of June, we will all miss you, too. You're one of our favorites. See you soon, and happy birthday, by the way...
