Thursday Ramble

My allergies in NYC are so bad that I want to rip my eyes out, which is reason enough for me to be sitting here at a gate at JFK very early this morning. The real reason is that I am heading to a shoot far away.

And so I am having a go at the papers and reading lots of nonsense...

** I gather from PEOPLE that Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon had known each other six weeks before not only getting married, but also getting tattoos of each other's names. Hers says "Mrs. Cannon". I dunno. The marriage I understand, the tatts I don't.

Here's what I know: it's hard to get rid of a tatt, and Mariah loves Da Brat! They are best friends, says PEOPLE. And the mag says Mariah had 'fine china" flown in. I am wondering what "fine china" means to a lady who just got "Mrs. Cannon" tattooed on...

Wedding Wars

Tonight is one big, bad, badass episode of "Top Chef" - so much so that we had to Supersize it! The Quickfire is the classic mis en place relay race, followed by one of the toughest challenges in "Top Chef" history as the chefs stay up for 36 hours straight to cater a wedding.

** The NY Post says "SHE'S TOAST" but I just don't see Hillary ever leaving this race. But I want an Obama-Clinton ticket and I want it now! And I want her to wear that powder blue pantsuit she wore last night every day. It pops!

** My DVR is set to "record all episodes of "American Masters". Tonight is Marvin Gaye and I will look forward to a late night screening. It features my girls Gladys AND Mary Wilson. Um, give me a Gladys Knight "American Masters" next, Mr. PBS!

__MTPAGINATE_PAGE_BREAK__

** I thought Barbara Walters was great on "Oprah" yesterday but...

Swell

Last night, while the swells were at the Met Ball, the SuperSwells were downtown at the taping of "Inside the Actors Studio" featuring encore guest Sarah Jessica Parker. There was a whole lotta "Sex and the City" talk and it was a whole lotta fun.

I saw the movie and am not saying a word except that it is fantastic and brilliant and worth the wait (ok that's five words). And I am going to save the details of the show for air, but it was great. Christian Siriano was in the house, as was Broadway Legend Scott Whittman.

ANYHOW...

** Do you know that Dolly Parton says "anyhow" and "anyway" about 80 times during her live show as she is weaving in and out of her stories and song intros? It is completely endearing! And funny.

** I got several comments from people about posting that bathroom picture from Radio City the other...

Diana And Pals

Last week was for me the week of all weeks, with Madonna and Dolly concerts within a 24 hour period. Imagine my disbelief when my pal Troy called inviting me to join him at Radio City on Sunday afternoon for a benefit featuring Miss Gladys Knight... I was thrilled because I love me some Gladys.

But Gladys wasn't the only one on the bill. How about adding Chaka to the list? Now how about adding Andy Cohen Fave Miss Patti... Now how about tipping it into insanity with not just Gladys, Chaka and Patti...

...And throwing Miss Ross onto the bill.

The idea of those four women on the same bill begged so many questions, namely what charity could bring these ladies together and in what order would they appear. I also wondered and decided, maybe just to protect myself, that there was no way Diana would actually show. It couldn't be possible to see Madonna, Dolly...

Oh Dolly

What an evening it was as that lady weaved stories and one liners with hit after hit after hit that had the crowd on their feet.

The night started country style, early and on time - around 8:10 - when the top heavy, pint sized dynamo walked onstage and said, "you know what I don't understand?" She paused a beat and launched into "Why'd You Come in Here Lookin' Like That?". That's how it was. You know what I'm sayin'?

__MTPAGINATE_PAGE_BREAK__

Her catalogue of songs (most of which she's written) over a 40-year career is so vast that every time you see her (she tours every year or two) she mixes up her playlist. Indeed she belted out "Jolene", "Islands in the Stream", "Baby I'm Burnin'", "Here You Come Again", and...

It was like a mini-stadium show in a club that threw us into another stratosphere.

You will naturally recall that every few years, Madonna puts out a CD and does some special events to promote her latest reinvention. The woman doesn't screw around and there's a reason she's 50 and still Madonna. (As opposed to, say, Britney who is not yet 30 and crazy.)

__MTPAGINATE_PAGE_BREAK__

For "Bedtime Story" Bruce and I went to Webster Hall in our pajamas (the invite said to wear them) while Madonna read a bedtime story to 1000 hopped up homos.
Wednesday Waits For No One

There's a fun new episode of "Top Chef" tonight featuring kids, drama and Oprah's chef. I was in Chicago for this one and brought my sister to Judges' Table. Before the Judges started their deliberation, hilarity ensued when a mouse ran across the set. Oh, joy.

I'd been telling Emily on the way that Judges’ Table takes for-e-vah and they we would certainly be shooting way into the morning. Don't you know that it wound up being the quickest Judges' Table in the history of the show, and we were out of there by 9pm! I was like the boy who cried wolf.

After the taping we all met up at the Frontera Grill and got blotto'd on tequila as the Judges attempted to get embarrassing info out of my sis. They didn't get any!

__MTPAGINATE_PAGE_BREAK__

ANYWAY -- Since I don't really watch the news and since the news isn’t really the "news" these days, I...

Hard Candy

Last night we went to a (new?) restaurant called Smith on MacDougal. It is chic-now meets retro-deco! (That means nothing and I know it.) How did Bruce discover such a gem, anyway?

After din we went to Bette where we saw either Dolce or Gabbana on our way in. Would Gabbana be upset if referred to as Dolce? Would Dolce be upset if referred to as Gabbana? I'll never know... Thom Browne was inside, we danced to Kool and the Gang and my suit felt drapey around TB.

I am immune to disco, but I guess that's obvious at this point.

After that we went to some seedy sadsackeries, inside which one would surmise that any respectable non-Cyrus would certainly NOT be found on a Monday night. BUT let us not forget that in 2006 the NYT declared Monday the new Thursday...

__MTPAGINATE_PAGE_BREAK__

ANYWAY...

Am I the only one of us who woke...

Hey Mon

I am back in NYC after a week of hardcore island hopping in the Grenadines that was a blissed out chillaxfest. Nothing chills me out more than Irie Rastafaride Island Peeps. I asked one guy on Mustique what he was going to do that day and he said "Breathe". Yeah! I think I'm gonna do that today, in fact.

This is a jam packed workweek, and there are two ladies performing in NYC this week that I am buggin' about: Dolly and Madonna. I think I gots to go to Smell A tomorrow so I am going to miss both. This is causing me to furrow my brow mightily. I think I will just listen to "I'll Be Lovin' You Long Time" over and over and over again - that should do the trick. (I'm talkin' bout Mariah now, kids)

Some more stuff:

** I keep hearing from super smart people that Hillary would accept the VP...
