I knew that Doug was sick at the end of filming last season. Doug had lymphoma, which is cancer. I think I may have spelled that wrong. He was under going chemo to get it under control. He then got salmonella poisoning which was after his b-day. This would ultimately shut his kidneys down.
While he was in the hospital undergoing dialysis he got a staph infection from the stent in his neck. This would kill his liver and other organs. He had asked me to keep it quiet. So the rest of the staff didn't find out until it was too late. His parents died from the exact same thing at age 43. Doug out lived them by one year. His sister was killed in a car wreck.
I am so sick and tired of people saying he died from this and that. They have no idea what they are talking about. They have nothing better to do with their life than to sit at a computer and write lies about people.
As for you guy thanks for understanding this is the truth of what happened let it be known!

You guys are all great on that show, i dream of someday having the energy and willingness to push myself as far as you all do. Wish you guys could have a gym down here in Florida so you can get me on the right track like you have helped others. Someday my dream is to be like you and the cast , just need a little push in the right direction. Thanks Brian. You've answered alot of questions. Now alot of the things Doug said make more sense. I don't think anybody knew Doug had been sick for so long. It seems like one bad thing happened to him after another with the salmonia poisoning and the staph infection. What a brave person he was. I know it must have been hard on you seeing him go through all that. I'm sure you were there for him the last year or so to help him through it just as he was for you. Time was something that did not run in Doug's family. That sucks for the rest of us. You're buddy meant alot to alot of people. People only want to find out what happened to him because they cared for him. Don't let them get under you're skin. Take care, Larry

What can I say, this is so terribly tragic. I kind of freaked out, when I saw the little blurb that ran across the screen, that said this season was dedicated in MEMORY of Doug Blasdell. What??? Such a sick, sinking feeling. So after that I knew I just had to wait until you all could tell us what had happened. I'm glad that he and Jesse patched things up, and that we got to see that he had some truly wonderful friends. Especially you, Brian, it was very evident how you felt about him. Aren't you glad you said how much he meant to you when he was still alive? (Reminds me of the song, In the lliving years.) My condolences to all of you.

Throughout season 1 and from what I have seen in season 2, he seems fine and dandy to me! Now knowing what I know, I respect him for not letting the many life-threatening issues he had affect his ability to work nor did he ever show his weaknesses on film! From what I see, he lived life to the fullest and that is what everyone should do. Just becuase there is family history of illnesses, it should not stop u from living out the life u choose to live! But my condolences (I too have a spelling problem) go out to u and the staff and even to others who knew him as an individual! But wow! I seriously did not expect this! Life is a hard path we must take, but thru it we meet new and loving people, we learn thru hardships and pain, and learn to love and live accordingly! Once again, I am deeply sadden by the loss. I hope you and the cast remember him as fondly as I will. The impact that TV personalities have is HUGE!! Having battled with my weight and self esteem all my life, this show, Doug, and yes you Brian, have made an impact on me. I love everyone at skylab, especially Doug. I started read the blogs and no one said what I was thinking but the way they were talking I was getting a horrible, sinking feeling in my chest. I immediately went to your blog knowing that you are/were the closest with Doug, and out of everyone I think you are upfront and the most honest. And of course there it is. The truth. I am in tears right now and I can't believe what I just read. Thank you for being so true and honest, and I have such a high amount of respect for you. I want to send my condolances out to you and everyone there at sky. It is such a shame that someone like Doug was taken from this world but all I can think is that he is in a place where he feels no pain, and is smiling and with his mom and dad and sister and any other loved one that he lost. He is happy and nothing can happen to him anymore and he is looking down on you like your guardian angel. I didn't know him but I can tell that he had a huge heart and was a caring person. I am deeply sorry for your loss. Stay strong, and I am guessing that you have had some time to deal with this since it's TV and it happened, I don't know how long ago, but no matter how long you never get over a loss like him.
I am so sorry. My heart goes out to you.
You can email me back on this, or you can email me if you have myspace at http://www.myspace.com/carrielizrainey
I am a normal person, and not emailing you so I can "talk to someone on TV" or anything like that. I swear! I live in Seattle, WA, I'm 31 and getting married. I just had to email you and send my love to you and Doug's Ex, (forgot his name) but I could tell that he had a lot of love for him too.
As hard as it is to accept his loss, it's God's plan, and he was here and was brought into your life and anyone else's life he touched, for a reason. You can say that you're lucky that God gave you a moments grace and you were lucky to have been touched by an angel.
Good Luck and I hope that I hear from you, and if not then I understand you are busy.
Hang in there, and Doug will always be with you!

HI Brian-
I just recently caught the episode in which Doug was put into a drug induced coma. The episode really rocked me emotionally. I now know, thanks to your blog, that the events that lead up to his coma began with a cancer diagnosis but I experienced a similar situation about 2 years. My 30-year old cousin was rushed to the hospital she worked at after going into respitory failure. She had a double respitory infection and pnuemonia. The doctors put her into drug induced coma and she had to be hooked up to a respirator. After about a week they thought that she was regaining control of her breathing. Unfortunately, when they took her off the respirator they discovered that she was, in fact, brain dead. She was taken off of life support shortly before her 31st birthday. I sympathize with you and your staff so much....it's difficult to loose someone so close to you, so caring, so worth the life they lived. To see it end so early is tragic....good luck to you and your staff in your grieving process.

I just fell in love with Doug, he was such a sweetheart. He had a wonderful spirit about him. He seemed to make everyone around him feel special and at ease. I would have loved to have met him. Isn't it sad that even in death people have to make up stories and gossip? I would have never guessed that Doug was sick. He looked like the picture of health to me. I was floored when I saw the episode where he was taken to the hospital. I haven't been on the computer in awhile and this is my first season of watching 'Work Out". (I am now trying to catch up on last season's episodes)
I actually just found out that Doug passed away tonight. I was setting my Tivo to record next weeks show and it said in the subject line , "Jackie sees her therapist, Doug passes away". It just broke my heart. The world has lost a beautiful person. I am so tired of reading in every article.."Doug, a gay trainer passed away". Why does he need to be defined by that? My brother was gay as well. I don't see articles saying John Doe, a straight man passed away..
Anyway, I'm sorry, I'm rambling and I am in shock.
My deepest sympathies to you and the work out family. Doug will be missed. :0(

I was saddened when I learned of Doug's passing today. He was my favorite trainer to watch, mainly because he seemed to become so emotionally involved with people. He seemed to be very sincere and looked as though he was willing to do anything for the people he cared about. You two obviously shared a great friendship and I'm sorry for your loss. Hopefully the knowledge that Doug's goodness touched peoples' lives is some comfort.

First and Foremost, I want to tell you how sorry I am for your loss, Doug was such a great guy and truly cared about you and the other trainers. The show will never be the same without him. Also, kudos to you Brian, I have watched the show since it started and at first you come off as a bad ass and then the more I watched the more I really found out that you are one of the most caring and understanding people on the show and I think that your future wife is very lucky to have found you. Don't ever change.
How come Doug wanted you to keep it a secret from everyone? Also, how did the other trainers react when they found out that you had known all along?

I am so sorry for your loss. Doug was the picture of health and I am so shocked I don't really know what to say. It is truly unfortunate that it takes such a great loss for others to see what life is really all about. Live every day like its your last. Seeing the show and watching Doug working with his clients really touched my heart he seemed so caring and generous and sincere. I am currently @ 40 pounds overweight and in Doug's honor today id the first day of the rest of my life and the first thing I will to is fight my battle(and watch re-runs so I can hear his motivating words) and for him and for me I am going to win. I know you said many times on the show that you were very close to him ad he seemed like a father figure to you. I just wanted to convey my condolences to you especially because I know you were probably his closest friend on the show. I did not know your friend but he seemed like such a nice man, but I do know the pain you are going through. It seemd too soon for him to leave being such a young man. I know you don't know me at all but blessings to you and the whole "Workout Staff" I plan to keep watching the show and by the way I think you are a great trainer! Very inspirational. His passing and what must have been painful, invasive death was a loss we all feel. And we didn't even know him! I can't imagine what you and others must feel.
But you are in my thoughts and Doug remains a dream and inspiration to others around him--onscreen and off that kindness and character carry their own royal rewards.

My deepest sympathy to all over Doug's passing, especially Brian. I understand the devastation of losing a close friend so young and vibrant and all so suddenly. My best friend was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and died 2 weeks later. I was fortunate enough to be there for that journey and was able to say goodbye that last day. It will get better with time, but you never forget the loss. I'm so glad you clarified Doug's illness, I really was baffled as to why the food poisoning and infection was so deadly, now it's all explained, thanks. I really did enjoy watching Doug's interactions with staff and clients, always so gentle and positive.

Honestly Doug was the reason I started watching the show. Obviously I will not stop watching because of Doug's death. I will continue watching every Tuesday night and all day on Sunday. wow... i tried to explained to one of my coworkers what had happened to dear D. i couldn't tell her the whole story since on the show dear D never explained about his parent's passing. i always wondered why D sounded so negative about living past his 43. i always saw the positive side of him- being w. his friends, or his clients... now i know it was something that probably would've happened eventually but i feel for him since it must have been really hard to come to terms w the knowledge of knowing that death is near and nothing can't be done about it.
i'm just glad i got to experience only a small portion of him and that he made a huge impact on lots of people- D's passing has thought me that everyone needs to enjoy every precious moment that you have on this earth-
I feel for you and this last episode showed me a different side of you. i always thought you seemed a bit "cold," but then i also know that the show isn't about you- so it was a bit different seeing so vulnearable.
i hope you get thru this and good luck...the same for the rest of the staff.

I sat there shocked as the drama unfolded briefly. That there was a strong likelihood that Dough would not recover. Then they do a quick montage at the end of the episode with his life dates. I was like "what!" I did not feel that a short montage and a date flash was a very decent tribute to a man that appeared on a show and gave very much of himself to the people he worked with. It bugged me. I read that he had been undergoing chemo...had he just started that? I think Workout's viewers would appreciate a few more answers about Doug and alot more of a tribute to him.
Thanks,

My boyfriend got me into the show, and I grew to like you guys the best. My boyfriend told me about Doug getting sick and passing away before it happend, from the previews. I thought I was prepared for the show time, but I wasn't. I cired all through out the show cause I knew what was going to happen. Seeing you there so upset and lost, man I wish there was something I could do or say to make this all better, to bring him back... Doug was a good man, so be strong and stick with your goals. I am so addicted to 'Workout' it's not even funny!! I have to say that Doug was my all time favorite. I don't cry often .... but, I could control my emotions when I found out that Doug was sick .. I was thinking he was going to get better. That really caught me offguard ... especially when he said that his parents both died at 43!! You would assume that that would never happen to him. Genetics are such a huge factor when it comes to longevity and health issues. I know, my brother just died of a sudden heart attack at 47. He went to sleep and was found 2 days later in his bed. My grandfather died at 47 and so did my uncle from the same thing. All undetected heart defects.
My younger brother is 35 and is on the verge of needing a heart transplant. He used to be an all around athlete too! Now, he
just lays in bed .... waiting to die. It's awful !!
We are all athletic and I just found out that I have a small heart issue .... that athletes have. Minor really. But, I have the all clear to work out heavily and get the cardio going as much as I can at 46.
Brian, I thought you were the biggest asshole the first season and what a difference a season makes. You are a very compassionate person. You and Doug were like brothers!!
I knew something was up when I saw the first episode and the
season was dedicated to Doug. But, i didn't know that it was 'our' Doug. I thought maybe a staff member or production crew or something. And .. to think I could have turned him "straight". I've turned men gay before .. but, never straight. Anyway, I am so sorry for your loss Brian. Remember that Doug's spirit will always be with you and give you strength.
They say "the good die young". I am not looking forward to tonights episode .... but, also so looking forward to it.
By the way, how far down the line are you booked up for?
Years? I live in Ventura, CA and need a good trainer to kick my ass into shape again!
There had better be a 3rd season !!!!

The last time I saw him healthy and his usual self was on his birthday. My father had lymphoma and a really rare strain of it. He worked out, ate right, and when it hit him internally, it was an uphill battle for him. I just wanted to let you know that my thoughts are with you and it really is a difficult thing to lose someone so young and healthy to this disease and its complications.
On the same note, because of the aggressiveness of this disease, I was curious if you knew the type of lymphoma that Doug was diagnosed with?

i just finished watching the reunion special, and came to this page after your mention of this particular posting. previously i had read other comments after the announcements of doug's death. i thought that some of the comments were extremely viscious and definitely came from people's ignorance of his condition and the unfortunate assumption that every gay man who dies young is a victim of AIDS. although it honestly was not ANYONE'S business how he died, i truly applaud and appreciate your decision to set the story straight, and feel that even though doug did not want his illness recorded and scrutinized by the masses (probably in part because he knew the assumptions many people would make), you did his memory justice by telling people what happened. it was done with class, so thank you for putting his story out there.

Thank you for sharing the truth. I had never watched Workout until today and watched the marathon Bravo played. I could see the change in Doug from Season 1 to Season 2. I lost a cousin and dear friend to this same illness several years ago. Your emotion strikes home. God bless you for your loss and your candor.
