This is now...
It seems everywhere I turn in this city I’m bombarded by Heidi’s face telling me that everyone is “On pins and needles” for Season 3 of Project Runway -- I can’t escape it! Especially after attending the launch party a few nights ago, reminiscing with some of my Season 2 cohorts, mingling with a handful of the newbies from PR3 -- it just got me thinking of what it was like for me walking into that audition room over a year ago.
Wow, how time has flown!

That was then...
It was my senior year at the Fashion Institute of Technology here in NYC, and with a senior show weeks away, a final portfolio deadline looming over my head, 25 boys to move out (I was an RA), and searching for an apartment in my “free time,” I was attempting to prepare myself for what all of my professors so politely described in authoritarian voices as “the real world.” The last thing on my mind was auditioning for some reality TV show. However, after catching the first season in its entirety during one of Bravo’s marathon-crazy weekends and seeing the audition date was only a few weeks away, I thought to myself… why not? The only thing I needed was three garments, a picture portfolio and the patience to stand in a really, really, really long line. I remember thinking to myself the night before: “Now, don’t be one of those crazies who gets up at 5am to stand in a line -- just wake up at 9am like usual, work your way there and let them see how cool and relaxed I am.” Needless to say it was one of the most sleepless nights I’ve had in years. I can attest my friends to fearing that the patented Tim Gunn stare would strike me down right there in my tracks: Would I receive it? Would they like me? Am I wearing the RIGHT THING!?!?!
(Queue the heroic journey music)
So I awoke the next morning with a queasy stomach but an unwavering heart, and set out on that fateful journey with my garments and portfolio to determine my fate once and for all. (OK, so I know I’m making this a bit more epic than it should be, but c’mon you guys, it’s fashion!) I arrived to a line of about 60 peeps, some old, some young, some soccer moms from the Midwest, other twinky fashionistas from my school, all with one thing on their minds: “Make Tim Gunn love me.” I stepped into line, grabbed a 20-page application and found myself flanked by a tall, tapestry-clad girl with an effervescent smile to my right and a cute, nonchalant, understated 30-something guy to my left. It was a weird chemistry to say the least, all of us knew we were going for the same thing, all clutching our garments tightly, not setting them down to keep them from getting wrinkled but surely not holding them too high in fear of others taking our ideas. (Seriously, what was I thinking? -- It’s not like people had sewing machines and a six-handed assistant to help them sew right then and there.)

well I won't get into the "you're so gorgeous/you should have one season two/OMG you're so amazing" stuff because you read that from everyone, and it really goes without saying. However, I will say that I absolutely loved your designs throughout the show, as well as your final collection. I spent the entire last episode gasping and saying "what the hell is wrong with him [Tim]" when Tim Gunn was oddly silent while viewing your collection. Having read previous posts (specifically the one about meeting Kathy and SJP) I'd like to say that they must/should have been just as excited to meet you :). I hope to keep reading your fabulous posts!

Daniel,
I am a senior in high school and am enrolled in college level art classes which require an enormous breadth of work to meet the college standards and in my attempts to expand my own portfolio I stumbled across the idea of fashion design. While fashion has always fascinated me (I could never resist buying Vogue when I went shopping), I never seriously considered myself doing anything but the fine arts. However, I have delved more into the idea of fashion design and would be ecstatic to make it more than a hobby later in my life. I was hoping that you would be able to give some type of direction that I should head to introduce myself to the field. A fellow student in my classes can rattle off design concepts and such like there's no tomorrow and in her presence I feel rather inadequately prepared to even think about attempting anything to do with fashion. I'm just the girl who wears a T-shirt and jeans every day, but I have an eye for beauty and I want to create beautiful things, whether they be paintings or clothing. If there's any way that you could help me find a path to start on, I would deeply appreciate it.

While I agree with all of the compliments about talent etc. I would also like to add to Daniel's increasing list of accolades.
I enjoyed watching Project Runway not for the design (which I really know nothing about), but for the personalities. I thought Daniel showed an admirable amount of class and good-naturedness that makes you think, should you ever meet him, that he'd be just the coolest guy to be around. I really liked that about him in the show, especially in the Pre-Finale show where each told a little about themselves and their history and Daniel talked about growing up dealing with feeling like an outsider or a freak in a conservative part of the country because he was gay.
I read an article once that people who judge harshly those who are gay, often have never met anyone who was or cared to know anything about anyone because it's easier to hate someone if you don't know anything about them or their lives. I think the more shows like Project Runway or Six Feet Under or Will and Grace highlight real gay men/lesbian women in a positive light... such as the super classy and down to earth Daniel V., the more that people who have limited views of other lifestyles will start just seeing the person and not just the stereotype.
Just my $.02 ;)

Daniel, I just want you to know that watching you and the others on the show has inspired me tremendously. Mostly you, though. Not only was I outraged that you didn't win, but I thought that you needed the opportunity more than the others because you were young, just out of school, and needed the jumpstart. I think your vision is incredible and I think you have the best taste out of the majority of designers I see these days. I thought you handled criticism and pressure well and always kept a professional yet happy state of mind. I admire you for that. Lastly, I'd like you to know that you have inspired me so much that I actually took up sewing again. I went to the fabric store, got samples, brought them home and began designing. It all came back to me so naturally (I hadn't sewn in about a year). I think your pieces are so beautiful and would love to know where I could purchase some of them in the future.
Take care, Daniel. You really are a gem.

Many designers were able to design. But you have TALENT. Everyone voted for you during the last episode via phone text over Santino and Chole! I thought you were going to win, and I'm sure that thousands more did too.
You deserved to win! The last collection was professional, yet didn't exactly show the talent you have shown so many times before. I hoped that you still was driven to succeed in the fashoin industry after the show. You should! Heck- Michael Kors offered YOU a job. YOU have a blog posted on teh Bravo MAIN page. They let you come in to help with the audition for Season 3. If not winning makes you think you aren't something....think again.
Keep your foot in the Bravo door...

If your like me, you kind of run out of mojo when creating your talent. Daniel,
Have you or the other designers featured on PR ever considered designing clothing for "mature" women? How about designing for "plus size" women? Most women are not built like the gorgeous runway models. Another often forgotten market are people with disabilities who also want to wear fashionable garments (closures may be velcro rather than buttons or zippers, for example.) Perhaps you are the designer innovative enough to develop such a line. Your designs are beautiful. Good luck to you.
