Casting Adventures

April 16, 2007

Page 1 | Page 2 | Page 3 | Page 4

For "Project Runway" fans, it’s no surprise that castings have been taking place over the past few weeks for the 4th season of the show. I was lucky enough to be asked to participate once again on the “casting panel,” and to choose who moves forward … and who gets sent packing. It's always an arduous process for everyone involved, and an obviously extremely long day for designers, judges and crew alike. I can say that for the most part, things run fairly smoothly, but I must admit that it’s always a bit amusing to see some of the characters who come our way … man, if I was only able to name names!

The day began at 8 a.m. at the Westin hotel here in New York City, and after a quick drive-by of the hopeful designers already in line (I think the first girl had been there since the ungodly hour of 3 a.m!) I made my way upstairs to find the producer I was supposed to meet and who would lead me to where I needed to be. In holding, I met up with one of last year’s judges … and I must admi t… one of my personal favorites, Joann Pailey. She is currently the Senior Market Editor at Elle magazine and one of the few women I know who can rock the 5” metal/stone Balenciaga heels at 8 o’clock in the morning!

Hi Daniel,
I love it!
Your narrative was great . . . I'm sure we will see some of the footage of the "poorly sewn taffeta on the wire hanger" in the Season to come. So, thanks for the laughs and behind the scenes view of all the people we don't get to see but "just know they're there" : )
Now, you did say that you didn't feel much of a change since passing the 26th marker on your last birthday . . . Surely, looking back from the seat your in now must give you quite a view of that 23-24 year old Daniel that walked in those doors?! Huh?
Grey hair not withstanding your maturation is showing. It is showing in your ease and delight in what your life is bringing you and the enjoyment of the people that you've met in passing through all of it so far.
So, once again thanks for the continuing insight into was is going on in New York, Fashion, Art, Old and New Friends, and so forth.
Namaste,
Ann

Hey Daniel! Great blog as always. I have a fashion question for you and was hoping you could help out. I recently got accepted into pharmacy school which will require me to be in professional dress (dress pants, button up shirt, tie, etc) at all times. Do you have any tips on how to look professional with looking boring? Thanks so much and keep up the awesome work. Bye!

I don't know how will your designs reach Philippines, but maybe someday I can afford your creations. Thank you for the inspiration.:)

It's good to hear that PR is gearing up; my friends and I are fans of the show. We can hardly wait until the beginning of the fourth season! It has taken so longggg! We are so excited.

And how exciting must it be for you, to have such an awesome exposure at the start of your career! You are so talented, and I am looking forward to seeing more of your work in the future.
Best wishes to you; may you be a huge success! God bless you!

I love it that Santino popped in to say hi and that everyone is still friends.
We are dying here without Project Runway and so looking forward to season 4.

My son and I are designing his prom tuxedo a la Project Runway - a $100. budget and a few day time crunch. We keep on cracking up with jokes from the show that we've made our own. Funny how this show has brought my son and I so together -- thanks for that!!!

if you make your own label, i'll buy your design.. really.but it's hard alittle bit, coz i'm in indonesia. maybe you should come around. go to bali for vacation or go to jakarta. there so many places that u can visit. (now i like the tour guide.. hahaha..)
you know , in indonesia, project runway still in season two, so late! still the final show right now.
thx...
you're a great designer.

Let's me just say the interns all miss you dearly at Raven and hope to run into you again one day soon! I didn't get a chance to say bye (lo and behold, the internet just has that way to contact anyone) but I wish you the best of luck, keep being absolutely fabulous as you already are, and hopefully Bianca and I will see "the dress" we adored on the runway during Fashion Week in the future! Hope all is well dear!

Look forward to Project Runway 4 as long as it's not like season 3, which was the worst and most vicisou season ever of Project Runway. Wise of Bravo to give everyone a little cooling off time from that season and give Top Chef a chance to redeem itself from it's nasty, vicious own Season 2 as if Project Runway 3 seeped into Bravo reality shows. Look forward to talent and less drama and less soap opera and less tooth and claw. Was surprised that I really liked Shear Genius although it was only 7 episodes long and I hope it's longer next time. Only one real rivalry and very different world that of hair stylists as the most cutting individual who killed herself and her partner Tyson off in a team double elimination challenge was voted fan favorite. Actually, I liked her and was amused that she so hated a fellow contestant that she took herself down with him. If you haven't seen this series, you need to watch it in reruns, gave me some peace of mind during a tough time and I was utterly amazed that the show was any good. Very differnt than Top Chef or Project Runway even though it had the same formula and ot strangely depressing the way Top Design was. Will make you decide to change your hair and make you realize the extent to which hair plays a part in fashion. Really enjoyed that show. Hope they get renewed and have more than seven episodes next time.

Danny!!!

You are ' da bomb ', man (i'm not so great at the ghetto talk i'm sure you can tell ;) )

anyways i'm so excited to see season 4 when it comes out i'm a total Project Runway FREAK (even more a freak than Kayne towards beauty pagents, if you can believe it)
you TOTALLY should have won season 2 the judges just didn't want to pick the 'obvious' choice for a winner. Your clothes are wearable, and many many many women would want your clothing

Hey, has anyone (reading this) seen any of Jeffrey's clothing out in stores?? i'm DYING to see what he's come up with even though Uli is the BESTEST

you'll hear from me more often Byes!
