The Skinny on Skinny Jeans

September 18, 2006

For the past few months, I’ve watched in awe as hints of an 80s revival developed into full-blown Lita Ford-style hoopla.

Leggings, long sweaters with wide belts, flats, and the most shocking of all … skinny jeans.

Skinny jeans, for those of you who were born after 1990, haunt all of us born before the end of the Regan regime. I cringe when I think of my favorite jeans from eighth grade that were so tight around the ankles, I often had to have someone help wrestle them off. (Don’t worry mom, it wasn’t my boyfriend.)

fashion_skinny2_.jpgfashion_skinny3_.jpg

But they are back, in a real way. So who’s going to wear them this time around? According to a random poll I conducted on one of my favorite message boards, not too many.

Skinny jeans are:

“a trend I’m skipping”
“ditto”
“tritto”
“my nemesis”
“repulsive”
“never going to be in my closet”
“horrible, on everyone!”
“make all but about .5% of the wearers look like junkies”
“pants go OVER the shoes people!”
“what I wore in eighth grade”

So if so many people are averse to angle-hugging tight pants, why are they suddenly everywhere?

Money.

It’s my firm belief that the designers have a secret meeting each year where they conspire to so drastically alter the shape and lines of clothing (a-line skirts to pencil skirts, bell-bottoms to straight-leg pants, long shirts to cropped shirts), just so we have to shell out the money for whole new wardrobe to prevent sneering and snickering. Who benefits? They do, because most of us will do it under the pressure of scorn.

fashion_skinny4_.jpg

What to do? What to do?!? Do I buy the skinny jeans in a nod to my fashion victim side? Or stand my ground and wear my boot cut jeans proudly in protest?

I’ll probably do what most of you will do. Compromise: Pair skinny jeans with a long tunic-style shirt. Wear them tucked into boots (which is great because the extra fabric doesn’t bunch up and look sloppy). Pair leggings with a dress, NOT with a top. And perhaps own one pair you can slip on now and then to prove you are fashionable. But I will never, ever wear skinny jeans that are also stonewashed. Shudder.

So, I guess if I was forced to choose between skinny jeans and giving up Devil Dogs for a year, I would definitely choose skinny pants, so here are a few passable versions.

Goldsign Envy Jean – These are straight-leg and not ridiculously skinny at the ankles. A nice compromise.

Hudson Skinny Stretch -- Not too bad. Again, not super, super skinny.

True Religion Billy Jeans – Best “butt” cut

PS. The uber-fashionalbe shopbop.com has a few boot cut jeans featured on their online boutique. If they’ve got ‘em, you can wear them .

Thank YOU!!! I'm so glad someone agrees with me. Sure, I was looking for some skinny jeans for my little sister (she's 8) so she could tuck them into her new boots. But I cannot seem to understand why someone in their right mind would think they look nice. Skinny Jeans make feet look HUGE. I have small feet, and I still won't wear them. Flares to Bell bottoms are still the way to go for me. Hopefully they won't stop selling them my type like they did in the 1980's. My mom said she couldn't find 'normal' jeans anywear. Oh dear God, please let the choices stay available.

I'm not bowing to the skinny jeans trend one bit! I'd rather be laughed at for not wearing the of-the-minute fashions than be laughed at because my butt looks 20 times larger than normal. Honestly, trends are great and all, but flattering clothing is most important.

Okay, so this is my take. when i was in h/school in the 80''s and a size 3 i would die at the thought of Bell Bottoms and glady wear ONLY the "new" skinny jeans (Chic jeans to be more specific). now with 3 kids, and a size 9, I swear to only wear the more flattering boot cut. even my 16 year old shuns this ''latest" trend! what a smart girl!

Amen. Skinny jeans are tapered jeans in disguise - and what is it that Trinny & Susannah, Stacy & Clinton, and everyone say about tapered jeans? Oh yeah, THEY'RE NOT FLATTERING.
I wouldn't dare wear them with my figure.

I actually saw some pictures of Kate Moss at London Fashion Week a couple of weeks ago in which she was wearing wide-leg jeans. It was amazingly refreshing.
you can find those pictures here: http://www.gossiprocks.com/forum/latest-photos/27234-kate-moss-pokes-london-fashion-week-topshop-09-17-06-a.html

um for those of us on the short side, i think skinny jeans are great, bell bottoms actually make me look shorter, but i still wear both styles, i guess im just glad there are more varieties of styles out there, instead of just boot cut and bell bottom. And its true there are some extremely skinny jeans out there, but they're not all that bad!

allie wrote:

unless you are super think, skinny jeans will make your ass look big cos they taper 2wards ur ankles. if u are super htin, you will look skeletal. both not good looks!!!!!

wear bootcut and baggy jeans with pride!!

For one thing, are there really true "trends" anymore? Actresses may do things that are "trendy," but in the real world for those of us who DON'T live in Manhattan, LA etc. you wear what works for your body...period. If you give in to the newest trend, what does that say.... you aren't confident enough to wear what you want OR you have to wear the absolute latest, to feel like you are that actress or model?
I wore straight leg jeans in the 80's and leggings and think the leggings for younger girls are great under dresses, keeps you from worrying about an accidental "flash" in school when the wind picks up. I personally am over leggings, because they lasted a lot longer than the 80's....hopefully most people realize that.
Even if I was a size 2 or 4 I wouldn't wear what Kate Moss wears. She looks like an addict and isn't particularly beautiful anyway. Once again, the media, designers and magazines decide FOR US what is beautiful.
Anorexia anyone?
Here is a reality check....my daughter is 11 and overheard one of her classmates at lunch refusing to eat more than half of her healthy school lunch. (private school lunch, with no desserts...just fruit. Approved by a nutritionist) She told the little girls at the table, "she didn't want to get fat...." She is so thin already, she doesn't have the muscle power to get the Volleyball over the net and we are all talking about "skinny jeans." Hmmmm.

melissa wrote:

I think skinny jeans are a big fashion icon and that it was a magnificent move to re-introduce the skinny jeans to the fashion world...if bell-bottoms could come back the way it did...why not let skinny jeans have it's own time again...2 thumbs up! (im wearing a pair right now)

New fashion trend, baloney! Us fluffy plus sizers have been wearing skinny jeans with elastic waistbands for years ~~ there was no beginning and no end for this trend with us! And, yes, we do look like pumpkins!

hey i dunno but i love the skinny jeans trend, i've always loved 80's influence in fashion, just if it's done tastefully and fashionably in a way that REALLY looks good, fashion is a question of expression and taste, and we should let people express themselves for what they like. just a thought.

Rashonda wrote:

I am misguided and undecided on the skinny jean thing. Honestly, I want a pair to show off my boots. My thoughts are - I just bought all these great tall boots with details that deserve to be shown off (not only that for the price I paid I should just wear them naked). But last week I saw a short skinny girl in skinny jeans and her bottom half looked like someone put jeans on a table. The legs were super skinny and the butt portion looked like a box. She could have doubled for SpongeBob Squarepants.

Jo wrote:

Just say no to skinny jeans! The 80's was just a reaction-- akin to puking as a reaction to sticking your finger down your throat. Some things shouldn't come back into style-- they didn't belong there in the first place.

Tracy wrote:

I'm sorry I have to disagree with all of you. The modern skinny jeans in my opinion are very comfortable as long as you try not to airsuck yourself into a pair that are too small. Plus they are very accomodating to when you want to wear boots over them and things like that. I also don't believe that they look ugly in anyway and actually create a neat silouette. Also I really disagree about the statement that designers are trying to get us to just conform to whatever types of cuts they say, because usually that's just our own issues with self confidence and our need to fit in and look like everyone else. But I do really dislike a lot of the trends I've seen recently I am not a particularly trendy person I'm more of I hope a trendsetter, but this is one fad I jumped on the bandwagon of automatically.
P.S. Skinny Jeans really appeal to Petites!
P.S.S. If you don't want skinny jeans go for Gap's skinny black pant!

I'll be honest - I now own skinny jeans. As for my next confession, I actually like them on my body! I wear a size 8 or 10 and am on the shorter side (5'4"), so common sense would tell you that I should look truly icky in them. However, I actually believe that they make my legs appear much longer. I think that flared jeans kind of cut off my legline. And besides I'm a total trend junkie....

Alicia wrote:

I don't think skinny jeans are solely for sizes 0-2. I've seen quite a few fuller women look absolutely cool in skinny jeans. It's just about how you wear it; long tunics, longer sweaters, etc.. I think the mom of three who wears a size 9 would look great in a pair. If you don't want to wear skinny jeans because you don't like them, that's fine. But don't let it be because you think you are not "allowed" to.

I'm not as concerned with the skinny jeans as I am about the belt-and-oversized-sweater thing coming back. Who decided that this looks is flattering? It wasn't in the '80s and it still isn't. Some of the tunics out there are extreme. I live in San Francisco - lots of fashion forward people here - and I haven't seen anyone buying tunics and giant sweaters, yet they're all over the runways. People want to look clean and tailored, not puffy and pinched.

Funny. I went to the (GAP) outlet in September and to my surprise, I saw the "skinny cordoroy jeans" on a rack selling for.. get this! 6.95. And why is that? Because all (ok, most) the youngens today have the ol'muffin top roll n'jelly directly related to fast food additives. They can't wear them... so I predict this skinny jean thing is here today and so GONE a minute after midnight.

I did buy them because I have a better bod now at 43 than I did back then... and at the 6.95 price, works for me. I'd spend that for a trendy piece. Perfect to taking my 3 year old to school and trips to the grocery store. I'll have no problem tossing them out at the end of the season. That's it in a nut shell.

Which brings to mind.. Sebelia's "has been" collection depicted as fresh... maybe if you were born in the 80's. RI DIK U LAS! Insulting to anyone born before 1980. We've done that been there. Give me a break, nothing about it was fresh, cohesive, innovative - oh palease!

Hey, WE'RE NOT STUPID, STOP INSULTING US.

Yes! Skinny jeans are back! I've been waiting for this since, like, 93 (ugh bellbottoms). And they look a lot better this time around! I don't like dressing to make my body look like everyone else. With skinny jeans, you can actually almost see my body under all the fabric! Very nice. This is one trend I'm pleased to see come back.

Colleen Rachael wrote:

personally, i am estatic that skinny jeans are back.
it takes a certain body type to wear them, and for once, i have that.
it is very difficult to find clothing that flatters me, because i am so thin.
thank god for skinny jeans - a fad or not.. i'm taking advantage of it.

I love to study fashion, watch PR, but I do make sure I maintain my own point of view. The only one who can wear skinny jeans now is my size 3 13 year old daughter, and I told her to enjoy it while it looks good, and admittedly, on her cute figure, it does. However, as a way of comforting the rest of us "plus size" people, (yes anyone over size 0), I remember a quote from English writer Oscar Wilde who once said or wrote that "Fashion is that ugliness which is currently popular". This was a 19th century writer who wrote the play,The Importance of Being Earnest, and he is well known for expressing his opinion on high society life.

I have absolutely HATED the "bootcut" trend of the past many years (just a nice way to say "bellbottom, but a bit smaller")! I'm so glad that there are finally jeans that are shaped like legs. I'm only 5'2 and 105 pounds and all those jeans that had ten inch leg openings just made me look short and stubby. Skinny jeans are NOT tapered jeans. Tapered jeans are high in the rise, wide in the hips and thighs, and then angle dramatically into a narrow ankle. That's hideous. Skinny jeans are slim throughout and they really help create a nice, long leg line on us shorter girls. I also hated how flared/bootcut jeans would make my hips disappear. I actually didn't even realize I even HAD hips until skinny jeans came back. Bless them! People, dress in a way that's flattering for YOU and stop asking celebrities and style magazines for advice.

I work in a plus size store and I see these women come in everyday looking for leggings and tunic style tops and I just can help but feel sick. I know that this is because not all women truly know how they look in this type of clothing. I see women of all plus shapes the people who are asking for this style do have thin legs and hips but broud shoulders and rib cages. Can you picture it! not pretty. I understand that everybody has the right to wear what they feel comfortable in but sometimes you do have to thank of fashion, and the example you are setting for others. I personally believe that skinning jeans are promoting a poor body image for women.

Skinny jeans are being seen everywhere but I think their taste of something new for once (even though they were “in” many years ago…). It’s nice not having to see those flares any more. Plus, they help make you look skinny! What’s so bad about that?

I have to say, I like that straight legs/skinny legs jeans are back... I have to admit to being on the thin side... but it is so nice to have a CHANGE! I haven't (and probably wont) buy the super tight skinny legs, I will leave that to the 14 year olds who dont look stupid being super trendy, but the straight cut makes me look taller and better proportioned. It's all about the cut ladies!

So I am a teenager, and Skinny Jeans are 'in', but if you look at all types of style they you would realize that they have been 'in' for the Alternative style. I love skinny jeans, I wear them everyday, skinny jeans and leggings under a skirt. I love it! And I am not a stick, I have some junk in the trunk, and I am not running around wearing skin tight clothes that make me look chunkier. It just won't happen. I wear loose skinny jeans, if that is possible, and they make me look good. I own boot cut, and like them, but they make my thighs look like elephants. I do not like that. And not all skinny jeans are tight. They are back, and I am glad!

I am going to have to beg to differ. I love the new skinny jeans! Stretch denim makes all the difference between the jeans of the 80s and those of today. I was in high school and college back then (which puts me close to 40) and I remember wearing skinny jeans with Converse sneakers and really liking how long and thin they made my not-so-long-or-thin legs look.

Yes, they sometimes could feel a little too snug, and they could be hard to take off, but with the stretch factor it ceases to be a problem.

Julia Welch wrote:

Well, to me skinny jeans is actually something that can make my outfit look better, not worse. I'm a bit of a wide hips girl so wearing something that comes out wide at the bottom tends to just make the shape of my legs horrible, and if say I was wearing a big baggy shirt or sweater, I would feel very fat! Maybe the invention was made for people like me.

They also seem to just look more put together and sophisticated as far as pants go. I could definately imagine wearing the skinny jeans rather than boot cut since they wont cover up my shoes, they be flats or converse.

i just want to say that i think skinny jeans are flattering on a variety of different types of women. very, very thin women - no, large women - no. but for a lot of people in between - YES!
i am 5ft5 and about 120 pounds with narrow hips and toned thighs.
my sister is 5ft3 and about 120 pounds with wider hips/bigger (but not "big") thighs.
skinny jeans look much better on her than they do on me!!! :)

i think they can look very flattering on MANY different shapes and sizes of women, so if you like them, give them a try!! they might surprise you!

I was just wondering if anyone had the same problem I have with pants .I am not only short but i am blessed with being fat (oh yea lucky me NOT!!!) anyways can they make any pants today that are not bell bottoms ? My god when you are fat and short the last thing you want to wear are bell bottoms it looks like you are in the circus .I cant seem to find any pants that are just regular flare I know of course the solution would be to just lose weight but that still would not change my opinion of bell bottoms yuk . !! And for the price of shoes now why would you want to cover them up with this huge awful flap of fabric . Skinny jeans sucked too !! maybe I guess I should just wear a dress and hey I can make them out of my stupid bell bottoms thats a thought!

People keep saying that skinny jeans are always sucked to your body, that is NOT true!! I am a size 1 and i don't wear super tight jeans, in fact I hate when I can't move.
