But it wasn’t until recently that I discovered organic hair care.
I’m somewhat of a shampoo snob, but mainly because as a copywriter, I get a lot of high-end products for free. About a year ago, I received a goody bag at an event that contained some John Master’s Organic hair products. I could have cared less about the mascara, cd, perfume and...]]>
It’s hard to say who started it, though my money is on Reese Witherspoon at the Oscars.

Ever since she strutted her suddenly slim body and sheared bangs down the red carpet last February, everyone from Paris Hilton to Halle Berry is sporting bangs.
Certain celebrities pioneered the safe, side-swept bang last summer – most notably Nicole Ritchie. But this year, some are going for a more dramatic, full bang. They’re short, straight, blunt, and downright daring considering the commitment.

I have to admit, I have an affinity for a sleek, side-swept bang, though I’m not brave enough to try it. I have nightmares about growing out my bangs in the late 80s (barrettes, headbands, hats for at least a year), and ever since then, I’ve been too chicken to cut them....]]>

The weather is warmer, the sun is brighter and there’s a rainbow of spring colors to brighten our days. This year, daffodil yellow has emerged as the lead among them, and designers have used it for everything from stilettos to hats.
Yellow is fun, energetic and adds an unexpected pop of cheer to basic black, brown or gray. While head to toe yellow should be reserved for little girls and Palm Beach golfers, a bit here and there mixed in to your wardrobe is a quick way to update your spring wardrobe.
So pair some sunny yellow flip flops with jeans and a feminine white tee or grasp a yellow clutch and embrace this happy — and recently stylish — hot hue.

It wasn’t always that way. In high school I discovered my first fragrance love: a honeysuckle scent from the Victoria’s Secret body care collection. I wanted to bathe in it. I did bathe in it. Then I’d layer on lotion, cream and body spray. I was smitten. And then it broke my heart. When I discovered they had discontinued the line, I even cried. Since then I’ve never been able to stick with one scent.

But instead of chastising myself for my very fickle fragrance ways, I’ve decided to embrace my inner scent chameleon. Is it so wrong to want to smell fruity one day and sultry the next? I...]]>
If the fashion of the Golden Globes can be seen as looking into your own crystal ball, forecasting what you’ll be wearing this spring and summer, there’s only one thing to really look for: black and white. And if you think about it, black and white, unlike other colors, look good on every complexion. They’re both equally at home during a very important board meeting as they are playing on the boardwalk....]]>

After a weeks-long, unsuccessful search for a stylish, functional bag for work, I had to call in the big guns: My friend Catherine.
From the paper she pulls out of her purse to scratch notes on to her Cynthia Rowley boots, Catherine oozes style. She is stylish in every flawlessly minimized pore. Some of us have great clothes. Some of us have great shoes. Some of us have greatskin. But Catherine has it all, and impeccable taste to boot, so when I was unsuccessful with my hunt for a handsome, home-to-office handbag, I thought of her immediately. I knew she’d supply me with a fabulous, under-the-radar recommendation.

Minutes after I sent out an SOS email, I had her enthusiastic endorsement for a bag she’d been lusting over for months but refused to buy because of a self-imposed spending moratorium. I felt like I hit the jackpot! A bag that Catherine...]]>
For me, it comes down to two things: Is the boot comfortable, and is it stylish. With the vast array of choices, this seems like simple criteria to satisfy. But after weeks of boots shopping, my closet is filled with last year’s scuffed versions or boots that kill my feet after four blocks and are thus un-scuffed because I never wear them.
As I perused my local Bloomingdales, the mission was clear. I wanted a pair of boots that I could wear with both skirts and jeans, and that would allow me to walk without pain. I do not want six pair of boots. I want one pair (maybe two) that will work as well at the office as they do at Sunday morning brunch.

...]]>Leggings, long sweaters with wide belts, flats, and the most shocking of all … skinny jeans.
Skinny jeans, for those of you who were born after 1990, haunt all of us born before the end of the Regan regime. I cringe when I think of my favorite jeans from eighth grade that were so tight around the ankles, I often had to have someone help wrestle them off. (Don’t worry mom, it wasn’t my boyfriend.)

But they are back, in a real way. So who’s going to wear them this time around? According to a random poll I conducted on one of my favorite message boards, not too many.
Skinny jeans are:
“a trend I’m skipping”
“ditto”
“tritto”
A French friend of mine once pointed out that Americans are seduced by bath and body products that smell like or remind them of food. Though I immediately went on the defensive about it, I knew she was right. So, we agreed that Europeans tend to fragrance their bath and body products with plant essences like lavender, basil, fig, sandalwood and freesia, while Americans favor aromas like chocolate, vanilla, mango, pumpkin spice and lemon sugar.
Take Philosophy products for example. I’ve rarely been to Sephora when there wasn’t a woman or two drooling over shower gels and lotions with names like Cinnamon Buns, Strawberry Milkshake, Frozen Lemon Custard, Powdered Sugar Cookie and Waffle Cone.

Though I understood their appeal, applying body lotions with bakery-like names is peculiar to my Parisian friend who would rather put cigarettes out on her arm than smell like something from a...]]>
If a random person were to judge me by browser’s history list, I’d no doubt come across as a shallow shopper: Shopbop, Intermix, Anthropologie, Saks … literally hundreds of pages and products viewed each day for at least the last week.
So, I am addicted. Addicted to anything 50, 60 or 70% off. And in my defense, August 1 marks the unofficial end of summer clearance sales, so time is running out. To illustrate the urgency, I ask you to think back to previous Augusts. You needed a dress for a late summer wedding or a pair of strappy sandals because your favorites broke, and hit the stores only to find boots and turtlenecks. It’s now or...]]>
