We managed to score an invitation to the opening party for Malan's atelier on the lower east side of Manhattan last night. The space is gorgeous, the clothes are really beautiful, and Malan seems to be brighter and more alive than ever.
Malan throws a good party -- we got to rub elbows with Runway alum Laura Bennett and her husband Peter Shelton. Laura looks even more beautiful than ever at almost nine months pregnant, and her husband is nice and funny, too. Uli Herzner and Jeffrey Sebelia were there, along with a number of the models. The Project Rungay boys stopped by, as did Jay McCarroll, who was just as charming as ever.
Malan's space is gorgeous. If we didn't know that the design was crafted with such a specific eye, we'd say that it's been there since the late 50s. And it's very glamorous. We all stood around thinking that it reminded us of old Audrey Hepburn movies. She wanders in, meets a mysterious man who sells her the most gorgeous dress in the place, and then on the way out, she trips over something and falls into the arms of … you get the picture.
At any rate, we had a great time and we wish Malan all the success in the world.
FYI: His atelier is located on the Lower East Side of NYC at 621 E.11th Street (between Avenues B and C). It will be open to the public beginning on Saturday, November 11th.

Hi Malan,
If I were your Mom, I'd have been SO proud of you way back when your talent was blossoming! And, even more proud now...you are one heck of a son...no matter what she thought then, or now. Please keep up the wonderful work and you'll be everything you KNEW you'd grow up to be! I'm so proud that you realize that EVERYONE has an opinion and it's just that. This show there's enough of us who have a positive opinion of you...just like YOU!
