What a wonderful opportunity the contestants were given to learn from one of the greats -- and to learn her signature style, no less. I was puzzled that Lacey decided to do her own take on the "Sally shag." Her cut was nice but it didn’t even resemble the shag. You can make it your own after you really know how to do it.
After doing their own shag, I think the stylists realized that it really is a precision cut. You have to know where to slice in because that’s what gives it the modern edge. Tyson did great, he really got it. Sally was right when she said that people would pay $600 for that cut. And she should know!

A few times I was waiting to see what they were going to say about his styles or to hear what HE was going to say but it almost never happens so I am not watching this show anymore. Watch for yourself..it's almost amazing. I can't believe that Bravo has rascim in one of it's shows. They should be ashamed.

I like the personalities of the contestants on this show. They have such enthusiasm for their craft. Unlike the whiners and complainers of the Bravo "Top" show series (Top Chef, Top Design), these contestants have a much steadier attitude. They are kinder to each other too. Tabatha is edgy but not cruel, the rest have shown themselves to be people with heart.
And they have been good "losers" too, witht sniping at each other or the judges. Theodore was very gracious during his departure speech. I don't think the egos are as inflated in this show as in the others, including Project Runway.

It was sort of interesting to see Sally cut her "Meg Shag". (I have asked for it myself). Isn't she aware that the shag is not NEW? It was made famous probably before Ms. Sally was born; when Jane Fonda sported it for the film KLUTE in 1971. Therefore, I don't see why it is considered so hip and now!
In addition, I was disappointed with the unconventional tool challenge. That elimination challenge was truly unfair (no matter who got dismissed). It seems absurd that the producers would force the hairtestants to use dull and inprecise tools that are awkward to handle. One false slip and it is bye, bye client!

I think he is laying low on purpose. Give him some credit for possibly having a strategy - for crying out loud!
Most of the stylists on the show have over-the-top personalities which make them stand out... even Tyson has his own "thing" happening by coming across as the meek-shy guy who got it right a couple of times.
Anthony's cuts haven't Wow'ed me - or made me go ICK! So... he's kind of flying under the radar. In the end - I think that will benefit him, and I predict he will be one of the finalists - if not the winner...

I'm sure it was an honor for the stylists to witness the work of Sally Herschberger and learn her signature style by the master herself. However, I'm sure the average person would not be willing to pay $600 for it, even if they had the money. The difference between a stylist who charges $600 for a haircut and one who charges $50 is not necessarily skill, but clientele. Sally has clients who not only can afford to pay $600, but think it's necessary to pay that much to get a quality cut. Also, I agree with Erica's comment that the black men are often overlooked in the competition. I hope they intend to bring in more ethnic models and sort of "even the playing field" for all the contestants.

I know in real circumstances, a client would eventually find someone who would do what they wanted, but in this challenge, do the contestants get a new model or they ultimately screwed in the end? I hope you'll answer this question.

Jaclyn,
I have been shocked at the number of blog posters who have challenged your appropriateness to be a judge for this show. Consider Top Chef for a second. This is not a criticism of any, but Gail Simmons is not a Chef, nor was Katie Lee Joel or her successor Padma Lakshmi. Yet all three are Judges. You may not be a professional haircutter but that does not mean you do not know hair! And unlike Top Chef where Tom Colicchio seems totally dominant when it comes time to select challenge winners, on Shear Genius, I do not feel you, nor any of the other Judges are dominating decision making which makes for a more interesting egalitarian show (except for Sally's sexist anti-male rant in episode 2 which she directed at Theodore's clothing selection). On Top Chef all you have to do to figure out who is going to win is figure out who Tom Colicchio favors, and you know who will win.
I think you bring both grace and class to the show. And I do feel it important that every judge not be from Generation X. You are a true joy to watch :)

The point of every challenge and ESPECIALLY this one was to follow Sally's cut.
Lacey did not follow her directions and from that stemmed something that wasn't the "Shag" cut. If you can't follow directions from Sally Hershberger, I doubt you could comply with a clients request for something. Hopefully that taught Lacey a valuable lesson.LISTEN!

If you can remember back when the "Brady Bunch" show came into being.....Mrs. Brady wore her hair a style they called a shag. There was much talk at the time about the new hair style and every body wanted it. Did Sally invent that shag? They mentioned Meg Ryan and that was years later.
