Thoughts on Interiors

October 17, 2007

This week, Jeff Lewis answers your questions about the interiors of his homes. Add your questions in the 'comments' section, and see if Jeff addresses your question next week!

1. What was the white countertops you used in the Valley Oak 1 kitchen?

jeff_qa_03_320x240.jpg

I used Calcutta marble for the countertops in the Valley Oak kitchen. I have also used Crema Marfil and Carrera marble in the past. I like marble because it is versatile. It can be used in both traditional and modern applications.

2. What color paint did you use in the Valley Oak 1 living room?

I used Dunn Edwards Egyptian Sand in the Valley Oak living room. The # is DE6207. If you decide to use this color, make sure you mock up a sample before painting the entire room. Colors can look completely different from room to room depending on the light.

3. Where do you buy your wood casement windows you used in Valley Oak 1?

jeff_qa_02_320x240.jpg

I purchase all my windows and doors at Taylor Brothers Architectural Products in Los Angeles. They offer a wide range of product lines and manufacturers to choose from. I have been working directly with them for several years now and I love their great service and professionalism.

4. Can you suggest some alternatives to Travertine that offer a similar look and feel?

I prefer to use light-colored limestone as an alternative to Travertine. It can be purchased in a variety of styles, sizes, and colors.

5. What kind of bath and kitchen fixtures do you install in your less expensive to mid range homes?

I prefer to use Kohler fixtures in my less-expensive to mid range homes. It is an attractive well-made product. The Kohler line is extensive, reasonably priced, and available at a number of retail stores.

Hello Jeff just saw the episode where you fired the one guy. I would love to work for you, yes you are very demanding but that is what you should expect for what you pay. I would really enjoy observing you daily and try to learn the business from you. I am a very hard working guy with good work ethic. You could count on me to do whatever is on your lists and in order as I know you prioritize them too. I am a list person myself makes things much more organized and gives you a visual of where you are at on any given project. I think you treat your people very well and would appreciate a demanding boss that pushes me--I would know exactly where I stood with you.

I think your fantastic!!!!
Your connection with architectual detail and design is very impressive.
I think if your staff payed just a little attention to how you work and your level of expectation and just do it right on the get go, things would be easier for everyone and that extra saved energy could go into doing more houses.
A great employee and friend always treats the bosses money, time. and product as their own-that automatically raises the bar!

Jeff, Do you ever venture out from LA to purchase a home if it's a great investment? I live in Mt Juliet TN (suburb of Nashville) but I'm trying to sell my house and get moved to KY with my family before Christmas. I've dropped my house price $30k. House prices here don't dare compare to what you're used to, you get way more house for way less money (~3200 sq ft, 1/2 acre, 2 1/2 yr old, $279,900). Due to my necessity to sell, I've dropped the bottom out of the price, below market value. MLS 921924
Mt Juliet is one of the fastest growing areas in the South East. The market is still strong here even though the housing market has taken a hit. Great investment opportunity for someone such as yourself!!

Ya know, I feel for you totally!!! I am anal to a tee when it comes to the quality of work that I expect. The difference is that I also do my own work. Paint, drywall, electrical and my favorite, Audio/Video. I am a perfectionist and my own biggest critic. Fortunately, I am so good, (and modest), I pass my own critera. Unfortunately, the days of people taking pride in their work is almost non existant. It's so sad.

So I have a question. Why is it that these contractors try to nickle and dime you for a quote instead of teaming up with you, offering their best work without hastle for a cut of the profits? You make money, they make money. It's in everyones best interest to do well. It's quite obvious that you are comitted to your projects and have great taste. I think you could take this well beyond a few flips at a time and become a premier "contracted" restoration artist. Of course, you are probably tied up with the "star" aspect of the show. Heck, if I were you, I'd shoot for the Frank Lloyd Wright of restorations!

In all honesty, I'm not big on the psychic blessings. Although, I have been to a physic several times so in your defense, if it works, or even if it just makes you feel better, then by all means, go for it!

I'm new to the series but an instant fan! Don't let them into your head. Keep up the great work!

I am currently restoring homes in Omaha. My father in law and I have purchased two homes (they are both under 100k). We have put alot of work into the properties and have not seen a return (zero). We pretty much do everything ourselves (plumbing, electrical, painting, laying wood floors, etc). We still havent sold either or the properties. Its hard because my father in law is older and doesnt make it out to the job site as much as he should, thus, every project is behind schedule. How important are timeframes when you are doing a flip? I cant get it across to him how important it is to stay on task. I will send you pics of the first property we restored. Thanks for your time and have a great day.

Hi Jeff,

I'd like to know if you have any good advice as to how to get into real estate (flipping), financially speaking that is. Like you Jeff, I've been drawing housing layouts since I was a kid and used to absolutely pour over architectural magazines. We had stacks of them. Every single house/apartment/office I walk into, I immediately think about how I would paint it, move the furniture, tear down the walls, etc. I would love to get into flipping houses but I don't know how to start financially. My family does not come from money. I had to work extremely hard to get myself through school financially. Things are looking up incredibly as last year I bought my first property (a cottage which I fixed up as a rental property for vacationers in Ontario - and I had it booked solid through the entire summer last year) but how does one make that bigger leap? How do you get in on the flip or start one yourself? I'm hard working, detail oriented, creative, quick thinking and learning... I think I would love this kind of work and be good at it. I would really appreciate to hear any advice in this area.

Cheers,
Anna

My wife claims that you and I are twins separated at birth. Your show is truly an accurate representation of the bravado necessary to survive in this business. I've been flipping//rehabbing since 2000 and I must say that your comments on the costs of money have been great. I have my employees watch your show when they think I'm too demanding. It takes a perfectionist to make this work. This is the only real estate show I can watch, b/c all the others are very "bubble gum". Well done!

I now own my own handyman service, and share Jeffs vision of Quality. My comment to Jeff is, your staffs level of commitment and loyalty are questionable. Many of us not in tvland are well skilled and hard working and would love the opportunity to work with you. Case in point, why not challenge the show watchers to spend a week working with Jeff? I doubt he is that crazy and hard to work with, everything he has asked his staff to do in the past is justifiable and not hard work at all. people poopies? I watched a PBS show the other night about the brain. Author Daniel Amen wrote, "Change Your Brain, Change Your Life" was on the show. He states there are three areas of the brain that may need fish oil (flaxseed oil for vegetarians) to help keep things balanced. He talked about one area of the brain without the right amount of certain chemicals, that shows signs of OCD. If you have a need, taking the tablets daily is what he suggests. He mentions exercise and a high protein, low carb diet also. I haven't read the book, but I hope it might have some ideas. Take care! Keep pushing for you bigger dreams! You are such an inspiration!

just saw season premiere: on the ben lomand house, on the touch ups, much of which could have been cleaned with a Mr. Clean Eraser. Leaves no marks, no need to touch up paint. And yeah your painter did a bad job, but hell, i wouldn't pay him 300.00 a day. I do this for a living and DAMN, I guess I am better than the guys you hired. All painting should have been completed before you moved the "model" furniture inside. Painting is always completed first. Second, on the valley oak house, in the shower, those trim items can be secured with a tiny flat head screw driver, also basic white tube caulking could have been used to secure the trim. Don't you know how to use caulk? I understand your OCD, because I used to be that way, so working for you, would be no sweat. OCD means it's my way or the highway.

I gutted the home and tried my best to update the overall look by hiring subcontracters. Do you have any recommendations for old brick floor to ceiling fireplaces? I have yet to update the fireplace and it is an eyesore being that it is in the living room. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

IF you don't want your dogs "piddling" indoors, you would be well advised to put water out for them on a schedule, just as you do with food. Dogs don't need water available to them all the time anymore than people do. They can easily get by on drinking water two or three times a day, unless they've been very active for awhile in a hot environment.

You might buy an "Uncle Matty" basic dog training video. The video is like $16 and it covers not only basic training, but also how to deal with about every problem a dog owner could possibly encounter with their dog.

You may not think so now but someone who can just walk away from you after everything you have done for them is in reality doing you a favor. You cannot help someone who is not willing to help themselves no matter how much you try. This is your time to focus on you and only you in order to realize what it is that you truly want in your life. He is not it for you. Don't hold on to those who cannot appreciate that they lost the best thing in their life. Someone who was willing to do anything for them including holding yourself back in order to help them succeed. He did not diserve it but you cannot change the goodness in you. His loss will be someone elses gain and that person will appreciate and want the love that you have to give. Stay strong and I wish you the best.

Jeff, you are not wrong to expect people that you are paying, to do what you ask, as long as they get their appropriate break times. Too many people these days want to get paid for slacking off and wonder why they get fired. I think you put up with too much from your employees before you fire them. I just also wonder what your pay scale is. I'm sure it must be more than $8.oo - $10.00 per hour that most of the businesses want to pay in the high cost area I live in.

What is it about Los Angeles, aren't there any competent people who work for a living there. I would love to have an employer like you who cares about his employees and tries to give them the benefit of the doubt and talks to them when he has a problem with their performance. That is what a boss is supposed to do. Too bad you don't live in my area. There are alot of hard working people here who don't get paid any where near what they are worth. I guess people in LA just expect things to be handed to them.

Hi Jeff,

Love your show. I watch it for the fun factor but mostly to learn. We have similar tastes in design. what i have recently noticed is the door ways in your homes. They are recessed into the frame and with no trim and it gives it a realy clean sophisticated rich look to the homes. I am going to start incorporating that into my homes. I am a newbie full time flipper. I have flipped 5 houses in the past few years and have had some rental units as well. Some of the places I have made a small fortune. However at the moment I have a house in Springfield Massachusetts that is completely finished and been on the market for over 8 months now. The plan has changed to make it a rental until the market turns around again. In the mean time I press on and continue to invest in properties since it is a great time to buy. If you are ever interested in mentoring, i would invest my time and energy for a few weeks to learn from you.

There is a comraderie that just can't be duplicated in any sitcom.
Insisting that your staff answer the phone in such a unique manner must have gotten my unconscious working bacause I'ld like you to consider my proposal.
I was just daydreaming of having one of the cast on my answering machine. And you know one daydream begets another. What do you think about auctioning off your staff's creating the bidders' phone message on eBay and giving the proceeds to a charity for the homeless. Everything about this idea seems to flow together (Of course I realize that I won't be doing all the work, sorry.) It just seems that you have a unique viewpoint. On the one hand, you've witnessed the economy tank and ,on the other hand, you know first hand how it feels to be homeless (even for that short time when you sold your last property). This is such a special time-- politics is very heavy in the atmosphere and I hope nobody can ignore it. I just believe that the crash we're seeing all around us in this political year gives us an opportunity to analyze the power structure that shapes our lives. From my viewpoint I believe the fault lies with SPECIAL INTERESTS. There was one to many rotten deals and finally one broke the camals back and it has created chaos and poverty worldwide. And, YES, of coarse I am backing Obama with all my heart and soul.
Sorry, I digressed, but please consider my proposal. And, yes, I'm trying to involve myself in some worthwhile activities
now that I've suggested some for the "Flipping Out" family. Love to all. sheila
