It's OK for "The Olive Garden" to look like "The Olive Garden," but it's not OK for a groovy hotel to look like "The Olive Garden."
When you pony up the dollars and check into a posh hotel, you have high expectations. You want style. You want glamour. You are leaving your real life behind. Hotels are a parallel universe, an opportunity to live out your fantasies of opulence and squishiness and tranquility and WOW. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then go check out the majesty of Kelly Wearstler's Viceroy or my Parker Hotel in Palm Springs.

I didn't see "Jan Brady" in Goil's room and I thought that's what the designers were being judged on. Andrea's room didn't look that comfortable, her quirky ideas didn't work, and the theme of the room was absent. Earth=fertile, rich, comforting like Mother Earth. How did she miss that? At least Goil threw himself into a cool concept. Tonight's judgement was pure bull.

ByeBye, Top design, I am so over with the show now. As I said before, most of us can learn how to have pretty accessories. Very few has the talent to have a great sense of space. After Goil, none of the leftover has it. Matt, he can make some good decoration, but always you know that was seen somewhere.
That is it for me.

Goil is out and Carisa in? You've got to be kidding me! Jonathan , I usually love your judgment and comments, but this time, I disagree with you. Of course, you dug Carisa because Carisa is so easy to dig. She is literal and simplistic and childish. Her designs make me think of something that my talented but non-professional neighbor might come up with. Goil, on the other hand, has a touch of genius: he is sophisticated, unpredictable, complex, thoughtful. He takes longer to dig, in just the same way that a great piece of art does. (He wasn't necessarily my favorite to win--Matt's ability to transform any project into elegance and beauty makes him the top in my book--but to keep Carisa and eliminate Goil, Jonathan, c'est terrible!) And even though he is a bit panicky and tends to freak out under time pressure, at least he doesn't take it out on anyone around (or underneath) him, a la a certain diva on the show. But, I understand, a diva sells more than a short little Thai kid.
I'm disappointed! I came looking for top design and found that --as in all reality TV--this is really about top drama.
And as an adieu to you Jonathan, all I can say is:

Matt's room was tedious and boring yet you IDIOTS picked it as top design. Goils room was far and away the best and yet you clowns gave him the boot.
I think I have it figured out though. All of you judges are extremely intimidated by REAL talent since you have none, so you've left probably the three most boring contestants for last. Very Very Non-Threatening for you dears isn't it ? HMMMMM?
Every last one of you connected with this show, from the lowliest goffer to the executive producer, and especially you three pathetic primary judges, shoud be ashamed of yourselves.
As for me, I couldn't care less who wins your BORING show, because I will NEVER watch again. As horrible as your show has been, I don't imagine it will be brought back anyway. Frankly BRAVO ought to dump both your show and TOP CHEF, which is even worse, if that's possible.
Bring on the hair-dressers. At least they'll be entertaining, not duller than dirt like this show and its three jerk-judges !!!
And one last thing before I go. PUT SOME SOCKS ON ADLER. I'm sure your feet make your loafers, yes the ones your terribly light in, stink to high heaven and besides that look is REAL REAL OUT, and a poser like you has no chance of making it stylish again.

While the other designers put together nice rooms, they just aren't as consistently surprising and breathtaking as Goil...and certainly, while he may not have had the best room, his room was not the worst out of the 4. I would hire Goil in a heartbeat...hopefully, we will see his designs again on another show.

Jonathan you are an amazing designer and a very realistic judge! I have admired you for years and think your work is incredible!! I also think the other two judges always say what I am thinking and are incredible in their own rights!
I think that Matt has incredible potential and real talent. I find it difficult when certain would be designers, I won't mention her name has difficulty with certain tasks because "it is not her style" and she is not feeling it. Even in the way she dresses and carries herself, there is a "depressing", though talented learning designer. I think a good word for her work is "drab". Though, I thought her "Chef's table" interesting though I did not think it was a finished as Matt's. His "Chef's table" was classy, warm and extremely inviting! I thought his room was wonderful and I am so glad that he won the "hotel" challenge. He deserved it!!
I also thought that when you make it to the top you can pick and choose jobs that excite you and get your blood rushing!
At this level, I cannot believe that certain people have to put negative thoughts on each job. I feel if you are not excited about a project at this level, to learn from and get excited about it is not going to change and you will never be respected from other designers, clients and people in the industry. I think that confidence in yourself is so important and appealing and gets other people excited that I don't understand the "downer vibe". I think Matt for a young designer has that confidence and doesn't keep changing his mind and design and always seems to be happy with what he has done. I think that is a great attitude if it works with the client. I am completely addicted to your show and love all of you. (I love design and receive every decorating magazine there is). Though there is nothing like watching a challenge being thought about, executed from beginning to end and all the contacts in between. Your show is fabulous! Jonathan- you are fabulous!
Great entertainment and I think a great learning experience for all of us who watch. Thank you. Shari from Villanova, PA

Hello Jonathan,
This was another great episode. It looks as though TD is saving the best for last...
I too, thought Matt's room was gorgeous. The one glaring mistake was the color of that rug (uugghhhh!) It sort of detracted from the heavenly effect. It also seemed as though he switched elements with Carissa. His space looked more "airy" than representative of water. Ms. Carisa's room looked more like a water theme due to the color scheme. It also looked very, very cramped with clutter for a luxe suite. She seems to be a one-trick pony with her color choices. Andrea's room was critiqued as sad and too literal. However, I found it to be very serene and quiet. The "window" treatments that she created added a clever touch.
Poor Goil, OY VEY!!!! When I saw the colors, I screamed at the tv, "No!" The colors were too jarring and the room looked more like a hippie pad rather than a luxury hotel. He really needs to get out of his dorm room more and expeience life.

Yes, Goil laced cultural references--but he also is an inspiring thinker. I haven't been able to crack the shell of Andrea's low key personality. I think keeping Goil in would make the next competition more interesting to watch. Now we know that Matt will win (unless something goes completely wrong) and the suspense is gone.

Wow that was incredibly disappointing. Goil was by no means Matt, but Goil's room was a lot more pleasant than Clarissa's, who basically did a version of Ryan's jail cell. More impressive given that Goil has fire and C has air. True, vents are supposed to stream in air, but it also implies a room that is closed in on all fours and it needs little holes to allow for breathing. Unsurprisingly enough, C's room does look cramped and way too cut up into small spaces instead of airy and roomy. Your decision is just odd.

Goil's room, while not the strongest this week, was interesting and daring. Furthermore, as you acknowledged, he's made a real effort to take your feedback over the course of the series.
So, basically, you chose a designer that you recognize as inflexible and dreary over one that responds well to feedback and is creative.
You folks are the design experts, so my conclusion is that I don't understand design.

Goil is to Top Design what Laura Bennett was to Project Runway. They were both the best at what they did, but unfortunately, what they did consisted of only a narrow repitition of the same thing over and over. For Goil, it didn't matter what the project was, the end result would be the same. Whether it was a child's bedroom, a young bachelor's pad, a hotel room, garage, or a 90 year-old farmer's living room, Goil would respond the same, and we were inevitably left with his modern, splashy, eclectic, boxy room, which would be hi-lighted with some quirky trademark (dog bed on wheels, etc.). If Goil ever had to design for an entire home, I suspect we would just see the same room through-out. He is very good, but he is either unable or unwilling to show versatility.

Matt is at his peak. He is obviously the strongest designer. But, let's hope he stays grounded. I'd like to see him be a little more evocotive with his use of textures within a room or he has the potential to become a little "too" safe.

I was really sorry to see Goil go. He's sweet and sensitive, extraordinarily creative and knows how to think inside and outside og the box. Fire was definitely the most difficult element to interpret. Loved the rich floors and the use of space in Goils room. I believe that his downfall was overlooking the obvious in more than one of his rooms -- comfort. I really learned a great deal from the critiques and thought that they were very insightful. I agree that Goil and Andrea were a bit literal in their interpretations of Fire and Earth -- and I missed the color green in Andrea's room. Did she really say she was "afraid of green." There are so many fabulous greens. Earth does not need to be brown or chunky. After an artist / designer has masted his materials, the ultimate goal is to find his / her voice, and Carisa has found hers. Her hotel suite was just amazing, and I appreciate that her interpretation was not at all literal. I really dig the many blues she used, the way she framed out the negative space, and the white poodle was really fun! The blue Matt selected resonated with me, as did the low mouldings and reflective surfaces, but most importantly he made his small space feel large and very luxurious. It's not hard to see why these two will be back next week!
I am really bored with all the human dramas. It doesn't matter what your profession, this is tiresome in the workplace and such a downer. Back biting really sucks. Watching it, makes me want to work at censoring myself.

Although he has garnered many fans, Goil's "going" was the right call. His room tanked, big time. Carisa's room stank, big time. The vented wall directly at the foot of the plain bed seemed more like solitary confinement rather than a luxury suite. It had a claustrophobic effect. She sort of looks like "Janine Garofalo" (short and chunky - like her design choices). She is just missing a sense of humor...
Andrea's room was quiet and soothing. 'Loved that sumptuous bed. It had a real presence in the room. However, the "grassy" side table inset was awkward (where to put a glass down?).
Matt's room was simply lovely, with the exception of that area rug. It looked faded or dirty. However, out of the 4 rooms, his was the most deluxe of the bunch!
btw: why is there a fuss about your socklessness? I didn't even notice until people brought it up. Next, these foolish fans will demand to know if you wear underwear... "TMI".

Goil's was not the best either, but he was not the worst. Carissa used almost the same wall color for the Chef's dining room and for the hotel room and failed in both tasks. Is Bravo planning to have Top Whinner show in the future? Don't forget about Carissa, please. She will make to the finals and with the prize money she'll promote her blaming/whinning abilities to the fullest. It was unfair to send Goil home.

Am I the only one that found an almost pure white room to be antiseptic. It would be the kind of room that if I went into any stain any remaining evidence of the prior occupents would scream at you and scream dirty. The House keeping would be bleaching that room after every visit. It was so sterile and not at all enticing. And I have stayed in 5 star elegant hotel suites. His take was sadly reminicent of the Marriott chain. I actually liked Goil's the best. His only draw back the chairs and I was not keen on the dangling metal pieces on the head board. Maybe it is just the effect of the tv filming

I'm a design freak. HGTV is always on at my house, and I'm always thinking of ways to increase my design portfolio. But the truth is, I wasn't really thrilled with this show at first. But then I started to get used to the idea that even an interior designer could be lame (I mean "see you later decorator"? Who says that??). Well this week we have learned that even the greatest interior designers could be wrong. Goil should never have gone home. I mean sure, Andrea's room had grass, so there was something "earthy" but wasn't that the most literal thing in any of the rooms? You said you loved Matt's color because it had good color, but you got rid of Goil for the same reason? I mean come on! Interior designers are more then decorators, espcially bad decorators, and that's what Andrea was this week, a bad decorator.
Design Peace!

Bring back Goil! Perhaps they should do "Iron Chef" with Goil as the Iron designer, but give him 7 days to complete a design and the finalist has to do it in 2.
Whoops, thats food network, there could be legal issues involved with that idea, never mind.

Good-bye Goil - the great beginner but never finished.
Andrea lost some respect - I can't do earth. Earth is Mother, inviting, loving - what's so hard. Bring her more grass to chew on.
Still not a believer in Clarrisa.
Matt is still the front runner.

I hate to say this but I wouldn't have wanted to stay in any of the hotel rooms designed this week. None of them appealed to me. I am sorry to see Goil go, he was my FAVORITE by far and I know he's going to go far in the real world. Now, if he did a show on a design channel, I'd love to watch. Not only because I think his designs rock but he has a personality that really comes across great on TV. GOOD LUCK GOIL, YOU ARE LOVED!

The show has officially hit bottom with the voting off of Goil. Was it peasonal...were the inferior designers worried that an architect would out do them. It's a conspiracy. If I had to choose someone to work along side with, i would pick Goil over anyone else on that set...including the judges.
I couldn't believe I heard a judge say that they were looking for something more "practical" than "theoretical"....horrible.

Please get rid of Carissa - she has no sense of luxe, at best, she does Ikea-ish kit rooms. And, Jonathan, please stop your praises for her "stong colors", Her style is harsh, she's pain that cannot stop rolling her eyes and stabbing others in the back.

ok, all 4 designers missed the point of the challenge ! The challenge was to create a "luxury hotel suite for todays business traveler". So, ok, guys, where's the computer station? The big screen cable tv? Hotel suites today accomodate business travelers with 4 basic areas= bed area, TV/entertainment/gaming area, computer/fax/printer area, and eating/working area. and of course closets, windows, drawer units. Where was all that? Only one room had windows- but no window treatments!
These designers are all too young ! They have no experience with actually travelling on business !
As amazing as it was to watch all 4 miss the point of the challenge, i was even more surprised that none of the judges NOTICED! Something isn't right here !

I was sad to see Goil go because now that mr f*&%tard Michael is gone (about time and long overdue), I think everyone who remains is worthy of the top prize. People need to stop bashing Carissa. Yeah, she whines and complains about things that she let get out of control, but we don't all respond to stress the same way and the work speaks for itself. I think Goil, Carissa, Andrea and Matt have all surprised us at least once during the course of the show. From this point on I'll be happy with whoever wins (unless someone does something heinous in the next few episodes).

Wow Jonathan, you certainly have no qualms with shameless self-praise. Using your own and Kelly's hotel designs as examples of the most wonderfully designed hotels ever is pretty tacky, even if they are awesome.

Hm-m-m, Jonathan...how could you? Where was your voice? Goil deserved to continue his jorney based on what we saw before, his out of the box thinking, his sunny creativity and his tremendous personality. The two things Goil was missing were: 1) sense of luxury and 2) an emotional strength to work under the pressure. So what? But his innovative style, an unique taste, fun - it was and it is there. The luxury just was not his cup of tea yet. But it would come. To eliminate him was such a mistake. Carissa - neither she is fun nor her designs. Andrea - she is very predictable. She won one challenge and didn't impress us with any others. Matt is definitely a good designer. However, his last victory was very questionable for me: the suite was very cold and reminded me of the hospital room. It would be fair to see Matt and Goil in the finals. Have you ever considered to change your mind? Jonathan, do something, please. It's not an easy job to judge in front of the camera. I remember Chef's Tom words from Top Chef: if you did something wrong, fix it. Can you? O-o-ops, it's not a live show, what I am asking for? Marcel and Goil could change the world and they will. Why the judges see it differently?

To Irena;
You questioned the validity of latering Goil for not "having a sense of luxury". That was the point of the challenge this week (as in last week's dining room episode)! Goil did not fulfill the requirement, period. Certainly, if the challenge was to create a cheapo motel motif, Goil would have won, hands down...

Hiya Jonathan Adler,
Your blog sings again, thanks -
Now that we are down to the proverbial wire, I find that my preference for the winning designer is up in the air.
Although you find Carisa's style bold and brashy, I find it repetitive and unpleasing. Most of her rooms have incorporated green stripes of one hue or another. And I hate the color green (to wear & to have in a room as the main focal color, etc.) Therefore, she is not my fave.
So, for me it is a toss up between Andrea and Matt. Both have done well throughout. Andrea has actually won the most challenges (either in a group or alone). Both are reserved and understated as opposed to Carisa's bombast manner.

Second, Can some kind soul please tell me why I'm unable to submit my photos for the weekly online challenge? I'm made projects each week and none of the links will click for me. I've tried everything. I can't even get to the registration form to enter. But it has given me plenty of fuel to feed my entire pity party...lol.
Seriously, any help would really be appreciated.
Thanks a Million!

Goil is a genius. The fictional hotel's Executive Housekeeper could have bought expensive bedding, if that was what the judges felt was missing, but only Goil could have designed that wall! I gasped when I saw the finished product. The judges asked for fire, and that's exactly what they got. Unfortunately, as in the case of most true geniuses, Goil's talent far exceeded the judges' ability to comprehend. I was sorry to see him beaten down emotionally week after week, and I hope he is able to regain his confidence. Carisa's and Matt's rooms were also fabulous, but Andrea's? Earth? Maybe after a mudslide. Andrea can only create space; she cannot fill that space with life. She should have gone home instead of Goil. She and her snide, cutting, mean-spirited comments will not be missed.
