A Trooper or a Drooper

Although I think we can all agree that the key ingredients to any successful party include fun friends, yummy food, tasty drinks, great music, and a neat location, this may not necessarily occur to the interior designer doubling as a party planner. While many party planners double as interior designers for a night or weekend extravaganza, few interior designers are invited to venture into party planning.

While this week’s challenge of designing a crisp party had to be more enjoyable than redesigning last week’s filthy garage -- it was important in that it forced many of the contestants to stretch their creative ingenuity in an altogether new direction.

From Jane:
I really adore the show and look forward to it every Wednesday night. But I don't just tune in to watch the challenge, I love to see what Kelly is going to wear next! I love the way you look - very avant garde - very chic - you can wear just about anything and pull it off. Also, it was too bad that Eric had to go. I really liked him alot and he seemed to get along with everyone. I'm sorry to say but Clarisa is really getting on my nerves and apparantly can't work with other people - she's a real know-it-all. I feel it will get down to 2 people - Goil and Matt - I love them the best and they are quite professional which is nice to see. Till next week...

This is the only judge that I actually appreciate. I would of like to hear more of her views on the show. I absolutely love her sense of clothing style. It wasnt apparent of her not feeling well on the show. KarlyQ

Again, good job sticking up for Ryan although he still got the boot. What I think you see in Ryan is what Ms. Sourpuss Russell doesn't see is that he's a big idea guy. He takes risks, he's not a lemming, and he is idealistic. Unfortunately, his talent may not be up to par with his mindset, he'll get there and I think you sifting through his attitude and recognizing who he really is was wise.

Hi Kelly,
You are cute as a button!

I am disappointed in the dismissing of Erik. He was always calm and confident and stood behind his team (last week with Michael's grape color choice). Meanwhile, Goil seemed pathetically stuck in self proclaimed victim role. Last week, he spent his entire time making a doggie bed! This week he presented a clever idea of making a "chandelier" of bottles. Why didn't he go ahead and create it? He should not have been spared the axe simply because he referenced your favorite designer. I liked Andrea's flower choice. It was colorful and edgy - something different.

The "winning" tent looked nice enough, but very safe (like any NYC party event. Mediocrity seems to reign over innovation.

btw: Michael's hissy fits and continued rants against Carisa are truly annoying. He is certainly the "drooper" without class!

juni wrote:

I agree that Goil needs to stand up for his ideas instead of being bludgeoned into the background by louder voices. But I think he is just frustrated by the team concept. He wants to show his designs, not have to be under the sway of other people's ideas.

I realize that everyone, in every profession, needs to know how to work well with others, while expressing their expertise, but I am more interested in the design aspects of the show, rather than the team aspects. I want to see people excel, individually, and not have to compromise ideas to blend into the team.

Stacey wrote:

It seems a theme here is Goil and his team work, inability to push his vision, etc.

People seem to be forgetting Goil's solo rooms ROCKED. His cabana group project rocked. Sure it was missing something but still.

Maybe it's the toll of the show or something else. Don't know but they are all playing on the same field so there is no excuse. Still, he was able to get his opinion heard in the cabana challenge so I think in this case it was a matter of Andrea and Erik being 2, strong people who were unwilling to listen to him. The snippets we saw, Goil was trying to speak and he was spoken over. That easily happens in a collaborative environment. If you feel strongly about something, you make sure it gets heard, period. But it's not hard to sympathize with being steamrolled by strong personalities. I've been there and even though I make sure I get heard most of the time, there are people out there who don't hear it.

Why didn't he make the chandelier? Again, we saw Erik and Andrea specifically talking about keeping Goil away from it so he didn't obsess over it. Whatever. We saw his design changed based on a conv. between the carpenter and Andrea. What is he supposed to do? It would have been nice to see him take a moment to pull them aside and voice that he felt some of the design was taking a wrong turn. I think Andrea and Erik are mature enough to listen and work with that. But you're in such a time crunch that maybe it's unrealistic?

Goil made some decision the other week about the doggie bed. Well, Andrea's just as much to blame for that because she, as the project manager, needs to be able to wrangle in these mavericks and say "you get 10 more minutes on that then I need you doing something else."

I wonder if Andrea would've been gone if she didn't have immunity. By the way, worse use of immunity ever. Give the PM immunity? If the failure was the result of bad management, which I think it was in this case, why should she be able to stay?

Not getting graphics done was the failure of bad management. Having someone spend most of his time on a doggie bed is a failure of bad mgmt. Having one person isolate themselves in this other room, bad mgmt. Not having this one big room pulled together with a common thread, bad mgmt.

As much as I don't appreciate Ryan's dislike of interior designers, I think Andrea was ultimately responsible for last week's failure and should have been gone.

I am a graphic designer and understand the complexities involved when it comes down to the critique. Dealing with subjective professors throughout my college career and then colleagues and/or art/creative directors definitely put you into a harsh perspective. What I find disheartening about this show is the CONSTANT belittling from the contestants. I realize that it's ending up becoming a "bitch fest" instead of a true-to-form competition, but come on people! As mentioned above—I, too, am sick & tired of Michael putting Carissa down and making her feel inferior to him. I'm sorry, but he should have been axed during that "grandmother room" debotchery (i.e. "Home Sweet Home" pillow).

He doesn't seem to add anything to the ultimate challenge and continues to put blame on others (remember the first issue he had with John?). I don't think he has the talent and I think comparatively, he needs to step up the work and stop being a yenta!!!

Kelly, I must say. Although I think you're fabulous, I just wish you'd add a little more animation to the panel. For instance, I think Jonathan Adler has such a vibrant personality. It seems you just sit there and act stuffy. I rarely see you smile! Come on, girlfriend, you have a beautiful smile and let it shine through your personality. Please! I would give anything to see you portray some excitement.

If Kelly was a drooper, I certainly couldn't tell. What a fabulous outfit! I, too, was disappointed in the results this week, although I understand what Jonathan meant that Erik could be all over the place with his designs. I just didn't think that it was justified with this week's challenge. I also couldn't tell from the show that Matt had made the biggest contribution to the winning room. I taped the show and watched it over and it did seem that Carisa really made a major contribution to its design. (I was surprised that that dysfunctional team turned out anything at all.) As a design aficionado, it would be helpful to know more of what is behind the judges' thinking, especially Jonathan and Kelly -- I'd let either of them do my house any day.

I strongly agree with Stacey. I think the ultimate goal here is to be able to create functional, good and innovative design. I regret the fact that the show is getting to much into what's "beautiful" (whatever that is) and not into what's new and who's the contestant that has something special and innovative to offer. I mean, Carissa can go a be a wonderful decorator as much as Michael, but in terms of structure, use of materials and composition of space I think that Goil has a lot to offer, it's sad that this aspect of his is being misunderstood by "obsession" and lack of leadership.

Another thought.... was really Ryan so terrible? I mean... was he actually worst than Michael? come on..... at least his work gave me an input unlike "mr. happy'" rooms. Living in a space design by Michael would be my worst nightmare..... I’d rather be in Gilligan’s island.

your riviting on the air. also your wit and design sense is second to none. you can be critical without being mean. i notice your harshes remarks are made without the designers present unlike your fellow female judge. you show a lot of class. even when your fellow judge tried to call you out over ryans artistic ideas you didn't go for the bait and kept your classy act together. you are the main reason i watch the show./ keep up the good work .

Hi Kelly,

When Erik took the time to graciously thank the judges for the opportunity, why did you all just sit there? Was that just editing? I hope so because it made the judges look impolite.

One of the reasons it is good to have a judges panel is because each person sees things differently. We all have different taste in art, music, and food. Please let your point of view show. You are a beautiful, creative person but you are coming across as a stiff, snob with weird taste in clothes. Let your warmth and your insight shine :)

LK wrote:

You might have been drooping, but your personal presentation was the best of the season. I could take you more seriously.

Unfortunatly, again, we viewers are being thrashed about by the editing of the show and the empahsis on playing well with others.

I'll finish the season, but I really hope a second run is built around individual design and a more compelete and balanced edit of just what went on . Less drama, more design.

Love the show. Agree Kelly is cute as a button, but that outfit was really poor taste. Just awful. It was so distracting this week I could barely focus on what was being said.

I really feel that Felicia should not have been voted off the show. It seems as though Kelli had the deciding factor. I think Kelli had a little jealously toward Felicia. Also, how can anyone say Kelli dresses fashionably. She is a definite don't.

I really enjoy you as a judge on this show. I appreciate your comments and that you do speak your mind about the decorators, even if it goes against what the other judges think. I appreciate the contribution you make, it would be nice if all the shows like this had people like you who weren't just "yes men and women" to the lead judge. Thank you!

Here's the deal. Top Design has given us rediulous challenges that no designer EVER faces in a project. Contestants are asked to create their base design at warp speed. No good designer ever does this. Creativity needs time to bake and evolve. I'm not asking for days or weeks here (which is what most designers get) but lets say we give these contestants one day to come up with their design. That would be many times less than what most professional designers get, but still a challenge. This would result in better designs and more satisfaction for the viewer who's #1 reason to watch this show is an interest in good design. No one is watching this show just to see someone beat the clock. Then there's the group dynamic thing which Top Design feeds on like jackals on a coyote's carcass. The judges love to talk about how it's necessary to learn to work with other people. There is more BS here than truth. The fact is that in the real world every design project has one designer and many vendors who's job it is to execute the designer's vision. Yes, you must listen to your client, but not to 3 other designers as well. Group dynamics are hard to predict and often impossible to win for seasoned politicians, let alone designers. If Picasso had to share his canvass with Guagan neither would have created the beauty they are both famous for. I look forward to the creation of a show that understands it is hard enough to create something unique and gorgeous without all these cheap gimmicks that impede the process. Untill then, I'm done watching.

I am not trying to be rude, but come on, a t-shirt and then the rest of whatever your dress was supposed to be.. I love a free sprit but I thought I would fall off my chair laughing at this "outfit".. I think your trying to out do everyone esle but your missing the mark, you looked like you were playing dress up with some 8 year olds. Your an attractive woman use that.

the show's okay...needs some improvements.
audio goes high and low and low to high - audio taping problems ?
experienced this on different tvs, different locations, different cable services...
todd talks to candidates as though they were 5 year olds...
show set design looks like something from the dating game....
needs more oomph with personalities and story-lines...maybe next season?

Love your comments, they are usually the most insightful and most helpful to the designers and I am sure they appreciate that. But and this is a trivial matter I am sure but as a designer, any designer (and i will get flamed for this I am sure) I could not possible take you the least bit seriously in the last 2 outfits you have worn. I am all for personal style but I do feel you should look professional when judging people on professional projects. I could not decide whether the strapless dress/jean type outfit was some cosmic joke or the black gothic puffy shirt was a Seinfeld back flash. I am not trying to be cruel just constructive. I do think you are the most fair and down to earth judges, but I wonder if this is a personal style or just a cry for attention.

I love the show..but who dresses Keli? I would be so mad if someone didn't say anything to me and let me walk out of the house in that stuff she wears...Tonights show she reminded me of that commercial where the lady is wearing that yellow jacket and the guy asks her where her dalorian(sp?)is....
