Picasso Said it Best

March 28, 2007

One design challenge, not two but three days to complete it, and the four elements utilized as themes for this week’s test, to create a stylish hotel suite for today’s busy traveler.

“If you know exactly what you are going to do, what is the point of doing it?”
-- Pablo Picasso

For the designer presented with a challenge you are not immediately comfortable with, Picasso’s quote encourages us to take heart. Few designers are lucky enough to receive those mythical flashes of inspiration where an idea appears whole in your mind. This means your job is to simply recreate that flash of inspiration as faithfully as possible. The rest of us may have to do what I usually do, start layering out the job, one layer at a time.

NOOOO!!!! Goil can't go home!! He makes the show!!

How did Matt win? Sure, it was pretty, but the colors were soooo white that it felt like mental hospital room. In many cultures, white is the color of fear... White white everywhere and not a drop to drink.

Caryssa certainly should have won this challenge. Her room was dynamic and exciting.

I rate a hotel room by sexiness factor. I would have sex in her room and in Goil's. Matt's... I'd be afraid of nurses attacking me in the night. Andrea's was ... cute, but not sexy.

I just don't see how Andrea didnt go home when Goil's room was so much more luxe. I loved the statues of women, they totally felt like fire.

Goil, we shall miss you, my adorable bespeckled genius!

I thought Matt's room was GORGEOUS, and I am not one for a modern look. That suite looked opulent, but restful and relaxing! I would love to know what color he used, because the blue I used in my room is anything BUT restful! I think Goil has some interesting ideas, but thought that red and orange were what anyone would expect. I was thinking to go for a look of a HOT flame... blue, and a beautiful sunset has pinks and purples in it as well. I am not a designer, though, so what do I really know.
Andrea's was ok... looked safe to me, whereas even though I did not WANT to like Carissa's (sorry just don't like the portrayal of her on the show) I thought hers was edgy and hip... she does have a way with her style I must say.
All and all, I did agree with the top 4 and with the top 3. I think Matt should win the show. He is consistent and confident with his design AND what he is about. I would love to have him help me out! He DEFINITELY has a bright future ahead of him... his family should be VERY PROUD! BTW, the show should show where the designers live to see what the DESIGNERS have done with THEIR living environment.

I'm a huge fan of the "Top" series on Bravo, I'm still trying my best to love Top Design. I adore the idea, but.........
That aside, I know that I shouldn't say this, but.
You are a beautiful woman, no one can deny that. The hair......why? Why are you bigging your hair up? You look like a freak, when you are so lovely, why do that? Stop it!!! Smile more, be nicer and stop frizzing out the mane babe, other than that, hope you loved your experience on the show. I don't mean this in a bitchy way, hope that comes across. :o)

Hello Kelly,

Thanks for your informative blog. It is hard for the audience to really judge these rooms given so little time to actually see them... It would be better if the cameras could linger longer on the different parts of the rooms. I did not notice the effect Andrea's bench had (or lack of other sitting areas). I did not find her room sad. It seemed peaceful and relaxing to me.

Carissa's room looked really cramped for space. The use of the center slatted wall seemed more jailhouse, than a luxe space. In addition, she seems to repeat her bold, sassy theme over and over. All of her projects look the same.

Goil's choices were just demented. The room looked like a hippie pad with flea market finds (i.e. those hard chairs). I would have run from that room so fast and demanded either another more suitable room or my money back!

Matt's room was simply beautiful. It was tasteful and soothing. The only glaring mistake that detracted from the full effect was that awful brown rug. It looked dirty. However, overall, he seemed to be the only designer who actually listened to the challenge and rose to it! Go, Matt!! Good-bye Goil!

I was very impressed with the design of the Vicroy Hotel interior. Trying to explain it's style to my husband (who missed the program), I said it was like a contempory, eclectic art gallery where the interior elements were themselves the works of art. Form must follow function when it comes to furniture however Kelly's chairs could stand alone as simply art. I likened Kelly's style to Picasso. How amused was I to find Kelly using a Picasso quote at the top of her blog!

Pamela Brouse wrote:

In my previous comment I misspelled the hotel name. It should be Viceroy. Opps. Too fast fingers!

sarah wrote:

It would have been nice to see the designers design a luxury hotel bathroom. As someone who travels alot I always get dismayed when the room is beautiful but the bathroom is the same old same old. For the record travelers don't care how much marble you have in the foyer they just want a luxurious bedroom AND bathroom.

S.E. wrote:

Was anyone struck by how much Matt's room looks like an update of the hotel room in one of the last scenes of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey? That's not a room I'd feel comfortable in given how close it feels to the room that Keir Dullea grew old and died in.

That and all that *white*...who the heck feels comfortable in a room that will get dirty when you breathe in it?

beke wrote:

Carrissa's room is way to claustrophobic and dark...not "airy" at all. She should go next...she seems very hard to work with/ for...she does not seem like a designer to me...a manager at the container store or IKEA...maybe.
Matt's room was the only room worthy of a prize, his design talent appears effortless and he also seems considerate and professional.
I think the other two designers are on an equal middle ground of talent...I like them alot...unfortunately, they don't stand out much either way (good/bad) and Goil had to go. I'm sure Andrea will go next even though she has alot more innate talent than Carrissa...they have to leave Carrissa in so people will love-to-hate to watch the final show. Which I hope Matt will win.

i sure do respect your critiques. the other judges pale in comparasion. i have agreed with the decisions of the last 2 shows. the top designs were obvious to a blind person.
2 final comments, you are beatiful to watch, also someone maybe should explain that the show was taped awhile ago and commenting on a change of hair style is pointless since the show is already filmed. i think one should be able to wear their hair any way one would want. keep on keepnig on.

I too loved the Viceroy Hotel - I wish I could be that unexpectedly creative, yet polished, in my own design.

This week I agreed with the judges comments. I hated to see Goil go, because he is just a dear, but his room wasn't "boutique hotel." He does have exceptional architectural talents (hence why he works for Robert Stern). I still covet his very cool and original cabana design.

Matt's serene, luxe room was the one I would choose to stay in if I had the choice (although I felt it said "air" more than "water.") I loved Carissa's concept and execution, but the middle partition did make break up the flow of the room a bit. And Andrea's was just boring. Especially weak because it's sooo easy to do an "earth" themed room today, with all the funky nature-inspired decor and colors around.

I for one dig Kelly's hair - for those who don't get it, take a lead from the rest of her cutting-edge style. In six months you will see it on all those young celebrities.

judith wrote:

I posted my comments last night on another blog, but in a nutshell, black grating similar to a jail cell isn't my idea of air. I think as a designer one needs to respond to the client, and Andrea used her distaste of "earth" as a cop out. They dumped Goil who has the only imagination going, while Matt always delivers luxury.

An aside to Kelly, I think your clothes and hair are over the top, and may I suggest you do clothes or hair, but double dipping makes you look "Marie Antoinette-ish". Also, the word is banquette for an upholstered wall seat, where banquet is a feast.

With all thae red in Goil's room there is no way I could sleep!
Matt's was elegant but too white and I agree with the whole jail thing, but I think if that room were larger, it would've worked better.
I think Andrea has it all. She does need to kick it up a notch in the next couple of weeks though id she really wants to win.
Kelly, you outfits slay me. I'm not sure whether I like them or I you're just trying to be provacative.
I think this show is lacking some pizzaz, though. Perhaps it is the personalities involved?
I'll watch, but am waiting ever so patiently for Project Runway and Top Chef to return.
Much more interesting and exciting.

You Goil supports need to get a clue. The focus of a hotel room is the bed and bedding. Goil's bed looked like something out of a Sears catalogue. W Hotels and the rest of the Starwood brands have based their reputation on the quality sleep provided by their beds. Would anybody really want to try to sleep (or bring sexy back) anywhere near that nasty beige comforter?

So long crybaby.

Neither you or Margaret thought Andrea's room was her best work and it looked very uninspired from my side of the TV. So why did she not get later'd? I think the competition between Goil, Carissa, and Matt would be more exciting than with the bland Andrea.

Veronica wrote:

I think Andrea should had gone home. Goil's room was a lot better than hers. Could you please tell me what you saw better in her room? or it was just Goil's comment about Andrea being between him and the top design?

Kelly, I just came back from the Viceroy Palm Springs and had I known....fabulous girl, just fabulous! Loved the place and looking forward to a stay in Santa Monica soon. Don't let those beeeaches get you down about your hair style and clothes either. It takes real confidence & creativity to dress as you do. Besides, if it wasn't for your bold style we wouldn't have the wonderfully fresh & luxurious style you bring into the Viceroys.

I think Andrea's room was the worst this time around but absolutely LOVED her dining room on the previous show. I agree that keeping Goil instead would of made the show more interesting. Carissa's room - well...it was cute, but I don't think I'd want to stay there for too long with the partition in the middle of the room. Besides, how does one watch bad hotel tv from the bed if there's a grid in the way? I liked Matt's the best except have just one little issue - enough with the starburst mirror/art/wall thing already! Thats so 2004. Would of loved to see something more interesting on the wall.

Melissa wrote:

Loved the pictures of Kelly's designs at the hotel, I wish I could visit. Unfortunately, none of the rooms designed this week made me want to stay in them for a night. I really wish Goil wasn't the loser, I think he's the best.

I really loved Matt's room. It had a lot of the elements I have been trying myself to pull together in my guest bedroom which is still unfinished and has come to a halt with my addition of a power plate machine. I wish the designers where given a job of designing a guest bedroom/gym so I could draw upon their inspiration. I am trying to come up with a clever way to hide my gym stuff and still have a glamourous room

What's up with your hair? What are you trying to say? You look great with a more natural look. Straight.... common, but all in all, looks goos for sure.
The show... I'm not so sure. It's missing something. It's kind of boring. I think the judges has to do with it. You are safe. The rest...? We could argue about it.

I have a dumb question. This is not a criticism, just question Why are the judges focus on feeling the tops of lamp bases or any random piece that would not otherwise not be touched? I can see feeling a table top, or wall texture, but the white glove inspection of everything seems odd to me. What does checking those details provide to the judges?

Hello Kelly,

Nice enough blog... However, I find your "costumey" attire and hairstyles to be very cartoonish. It is difficult to take your comments seriously. Is that the effect you are after?

btw: Carisa's room was perhaps mod; definitely NOT luxe! Her grated walls were grating to the eye.

Goil's room was silly looking; also NOT luxurious. It looked as though it was lighted with flourescent lights in a cheapo motel.

Andrea's room was calm and semi deluxe. She missed the point of earth features. The room could have been handsome, but it wasn't.

Matt designed a very pretty room. However, it really seemed more "airy" than representing water.

Holy SH*T there are some mean people out here. First I think Kelly and Margaret make the show. They both know who they are and are incredible voices for the industry. Kelly has the whimsical, chic and brilliant design backround and Margaret is just savy, classy and chic and knows how to call it.

Andrea and Matt should make it to the finals. Carissa needs to STOP THE BITCHING! She loves to blame her carpenter. If she could cook it for a second she would be awesome. Goil is a brilliant designer and very much a technician and I think he lost a lot of the fun in designing when he did his rooms. I was saddddddd to see him go.

I think it has been a great show and hats off to BRAVO and everyone involved.

DesignDog wrote:

I am surprised noone noticed (or commented) that Matt and Carisa somehow reversed their tasks. Carisa actually designed a room inspired by water and Matt's room was so air.. I thought Andrea, despite her past performance clearly lost this round to Goil.

Interestingly enough on TV Matt's room came out steril and uninviting (although I am a big fan of open air spaces). Maybe it looked much better in person, don't know, but Carisa's room looked better on my TV screen. Goil's room also looked quite good this time around, although a bit unfinished indeed. I was sorry to see him go.. He brought it on himself though..

Kelly, you are great! Finally someone on American television, who is not afraid to stand out. Whatever you do with you hair, hats of to you for the outfits you wear, and the way you judge!

Irma wrote:

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for your insightful blog...

Carisa simply doesn't do it for me. I really do not care for her color choices or repetitive designs (i.e. horizontal green stripes here, there and everywhere). They don't spell luxe.
The judges definitely are seeing something in her that I am missing...

So, for me it is a horse race between Andrea (who has garnered more wins than anyone else (either within a group or alone). She has been versatile with her quiet restraint plus edginess. Matt has consistently displayed his chic side. If either of these two ends up on top of the heap, fine by me.

K. L. Smith wrote:

Honestly, you didn't find Matt's room incredibly chilly and cold in appearance, despite how "luxe" it might be? And your assessments of the practicality of the lucite tables might well be extended to the entire room, which is just begging for stains, scuffs, and dirt that even Clorox cannot address.

Kelly, I know you've had a college education of some sort, but honestly, it simply does not translate the moment you open your mouth in this series. "Spatial" does not equal "spacious", and if (as in a previous episode) you utter the phrase "I think you were taking it too literal," be prepared for the scorn of those who've mastered the use of the adverb. At least you've managed to have someone spell-check and grammar-check your blog for the most part, despite the use of "banquet" for "banquette" in the blog for the chef's table challenge. (I'll leave the more obvious commentaries on the hair and lack of styling to those with even more time on their hands than myself.)
