Yellowstone and the Holidays

January 2, 2008

Taking the family to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Yellowstone Park went about as well as expected. The first part of the trip was relaxing, yet we participated in many activities with the entire family -- even my mom and dad joined us at the Four Seasons. We river-rafted and fly-fished down the Snake River, and we hopped on horses and rode through the valleys and hills of the Grand Tetons. I can't describe in words the magnitude of beauty of the scenery. The Tetons are so majestic -- the skies so clear and bright blue and the valleys so lush and green with the most amazingly colorful wildflowers. It was great having my mom and dad along as it was the first time they had a chance to meet George's daughters. My parents were happy in the comfort of their very large suite. Our room at the Four Seasons was a large three-bedroom suite with almost 3,000 square feet of living space. All eight of us had plenty of room to roam. No one had the need for extra space.

Now fast forward five days later, imagine the vocalization expressed as I attempted to herd and cram everyone into an RV containing under 300 square feet with no room service and mini bars. If I had been smarter, I would have started the vacation with the RV and ended it in luxury. Yeah well, the kids had attitudes, but they quickly turned it into survival mode, like hiking to find the nearest pay phone since there was no cell phone reception in the park. It was also quite an ordeal being creative in finding enough sleeping areas for each child. I will tell you that it was very cozy!

Hi, Laurie!
I don't know if you read the comments, but I left one before. I think it was a great idea to take the kids away from what they're used to. I loved the part where George was trying to take a picture of you driving and you couldn't look because of traffic, until you had a second and said "Now!" (sorry for the run-on sentence) -I just thought that scene was adorable.
I hate that people say you're a golddigger. I think that's just very rude, since they can't tell what you feel. I think you do love George, and he does love you,and he just happens to have lots of money. I hope you guys are very happy together, forever and always.

You are an awesome lady! The girls will always laugh about the trip and tell their stories. They may not do it again....... but it looks like they did have a little fun. Our family rented a house boat on Lake Powell. I think seeing that next season would be a hoot! Who would drive the boat? Good on you for teaching your family about real family vacations.

Lauri,

My family and I are so happy for you. We've been watching the show since day one and so we've seen some of the long road you've traveled. I know, too, that your joy is tempered by the pain you feel for Josh. I know that pain all too well and the emotions that go with it. For what it's worth, many people that Josh will never know are keeping him in their thoughts and hoping that he will have a happy life. We are also thinking of you, Lauri, and looking forward to your beautiful wedding day!

Happy New Year, Lauri! I think your trip was a fantastic idea for your new family!... a good lesson to remind kids about the "simple pleasures" in life and the beauty of nature too! And I can't believe you drove that HUGE RV!! Wow! You should be proud! Ha!
Lord bless your 2008!

Hi Lauri!
I saw the episode when you tried those wedding gowns, and they were soo beautiful! you looked great in all of them. I am glad you took the kids to get in touch w/ nature. when i was a kid back in my native El Salvador, i grew up in a farm and I had the most memorable moments. we got to use our imagination with whatever was around us, and it was awesome> I wish kids here had that opportunity because most grow up here w/ technology and dont get to enjoy what God put on this eart. Wish you the best, and this show is one of my faves. Have a wonderful new year!

Hi Lauri,
I 'm a big fan of the show and I think all you girls are really cool , but you are my favorite. You are a real stand out, we've watched you go through a journey. Watching you having to struggle last year and now watching you in love and so happy is really nice. I think that you finding George is somehow a reward of good karma for being such a great mom and person.
Thank you for allowing all of us to share in you this part of your continuing journey !!

Hi Laurie,
I am so happy you found true love. I also know what it's like to have it all and then have to start all over again. My situation is a bit different though. I was a sucessful model for almost twenty years and now I am a mom of three beautiful kids. I am no longer jet setting all over the world but I love being a mom. I am trying to stay at home with them but it is so hard with only one income. My husband makes good money but it's still not even enough for me to get a nanny or even house cleaning. I have an amazing idea for a reality TV show for Bravo to do with just this. It's so funny how in your twenties it's all about you and then when you have kids it's all about them. I have no me time anymore.... And my poor husband... I barely have the energy to give him a kiss. Anyways thanks again for helping me get away for a bit (my Bravo time is the only real me time).

Tho I am still in Idaho...I have indeed found that something better...Congrats...

I think your a good mom, and it appears you have found a good man. Lauri you are a beautiful woman, but your face looks like you have had some work done and it looks great. So what I'm trying to say is don't do anything else ok. Don't add anything else, don't enlarge anything else, don't make anything smaller, don't change anything else. You are right at the boarder of looking a little over done. So don't mess with perfection, leave well enough alone.

I can see that you want the best for your children and what is better than a supportive Mom to guide their paths? I wish you all well...

We live through the good times and the bad times and memories are made in the process. Our memories are the fabric of our lives and weave a beautiful story!

I am glad that y'all had a good time at Yellowstone. My family were not the"Griswalds" and we never really had a family vacation. These 5-star vacations are not really a vacation. My father worked most of the time. I grew up in a little town in Florida called Ocklawaha. My mother lived in Los Angeles, until she met my father. She worked as a secretary for one of the largest travel agencys in the world, (AAA)., but she gave it up to be a mother and a friend in Ocklawaha, FL.
Our first family vacation was when I was 20 years old.

Hi Lauri-

I think George seems like a great guy. Loved the family trip- definitely end with the 4S next time- it will make them appreciate even more the good things. I think those should be a regular thing- the kids in the OC and around that much wealth need a dose of reality. Make them get part time jobs as teenagers even if they dont need the money.

Last thought- if you are not already married, PLEASE ask Josh to attend. If its too stressful for you, maybe have your daughter or one of your parents be his "buddy" for the day so you don't have to act distracted. It doesn't have to change the big picture, but for one day, I think you should. You will really regret it if he is not there and it will be hard for him to EVER feel part of the family if he does clean up his act. Maybe George can talk to him about it and his expectations for the day. I bet Josh is hurting too and would secretly want to be there- even if he acts ambivalent. Good luck- Im sure its so painful and my heart breaks for both of you.

I almost gasped when your daughter asked to be the "Maid of Honor" at your wedding, it showed that she really loved her mom.I was equally moved during the scene when you were both sitting on the bed and you told her that you had decided to choose her as "Maid of Honor" since she had been with you through everything. Your daughter has really grown up since last season. She seems to really get along with her new younger sister and she seems very fond of George. There seems to be a lot of love and good feelings in your new family. It is rewarding to see everything working out for you. Your shower was beautiful and you looked dazzling in that dress. Best of Luck to you!

Hi Lauri,

First I wish you and your new family the best. I started watching the show from the first season, and have to say you are my favorite beacause of your morals and everything you have been through. I believe that you know how hard it is to raise kids and obviously support them as a single mother and what it takes to make things work. I've noticed in the past few episodes though that having it all may going to your head a little. I hope you don't lose all your values and remember where you really came from.

Thank for your time, and again best wishes to you and your family.

I understand you wanting to expose George and his kids to a different type of vacation. Learning and growing is never a bad thing. But what I can't believe is that you expected him to drive that huge RV!!! It was your idea. He didn't even want to go, yet you expected him to drive??? You have no consideration for him....and that just sux....because he has so much consideration for you.

Then when you were sampling what you would have at the wedding to eat and you railroaded over everything he wanted to have. Sweetie, he's paying for it. He's paying for it all. Can you attempt to consider the man next time? After all, it's HIS wedding too.

I know with editing that all things aren't seen as they really are, but what you can't deny is that you expected him to drive that huge hillbilly trailer and you keep saying to him "its about all me!" I'm starting to wonder if you are kidding after all. Let the guy have a few things. Damn! He is paying for EVERYTHING....including Ashley...who has no business acting like a 16 year old still and sucking George dry as well.

Maybe you could try going a week or so giving George what HE wants and considering him. (sex don't count here....so think of something else.) After all, it's not all about you. Shut up saying that. It makes you look cheap and lazy. And let's think about this....a $500.00 deductable would be a lot of money if you had to pay for it out of your own pocket, huh?

Quit thinking you are royalty. You're not. You are hugely inconsiderate of George.

What comes around goes around sister.

I imagine that you've made some choices and gone down some paths that your parents may not have agreed with but are you a let down? Your comment sounded to me like you'd given up on the other two, that they are flawed and your youngest is your last chance at a child you can be proud of. You are blessed to have 3 beautiful children who obviously love you. Can you accept their humanity, that they will err. Did your parents love you during times that were not your finest hour? Every time Bravo plays this segment I cringe thinking what it would be like if your older children heard what you said. What will you and your youngest daughter do when she inevitably disappoints you? Will you be 0 for 3?

I loved this particular story line. Sometimes we moms do something I call Making Memories - where we consciously and intentionally set up an experience that we just know will offer long term special memories. And that often involves pulling our families into it, kicking and screaming, lol.

With me, it's the opposite. My son was reared in a secluded small village in rural Hawaii, so my mission is for him to experience cities. When I read about the girls recognizing park spots on a documentary, I had to smile. For us it was catching my son pointing out various areas of Times Square to his friends.

I am still baffled about why I'm so hooked on this program. Perhaps part of the reason is the confirmation that we humans have way more in common than we might think.

Keep making those memories.

Forget all of those negative postings. These people are obviously jealous, they did not have anything to complain about except money and how your family uses it. It appears as if you and George are happy together and if all of his money were to dissapear, you would probably just as close and help build it back together with him (or shack up, ha ha) As far as his children go, they are his kids and it is his money, so I do not see why everyone is so obsessed with it! Everyone wants to give their kids everything that they did not have and who is to say that Mackenzie and her sisters do not appreciate it! TV only shows what they want to.

Anywho, give the kids a hug for me and two for Josh, he needs it. He obviously has some things to work through, as you stated on the show. He is hurting, otherwise he would not try to hurt you so much. I hope that he figures out what is making him hurt. That is the reason that he feels the need to hurt you, not because you have done anything wrong. Sometimes we need to bring down the ones that love us the most because they will never quit loving us no matter what pain we have brought them.

Good luck to you and George and with Josh.

I wish you and George all the best. If you were my friend, I would just suggest you ride off into the sunset, live your life, be happy. You have to be sick and tired of all the cameras, it's time for some privacy.

So....Since I am from Wyo. I thought it was great that you all took a trip there! I live about 3 hours from Jackson Hole, but I grew up in a town that is about an hour and a half south. I'm pretty sure you didn't drive through there. If you did all you had to do is blink and it was gone! But I loved watching the show and seeing how you all had such an experience, especially the kids! It was kind of funny! But I'm sure if I came to Orange County, I would be somewhat similar to them! I'm so glad you chose Jackson though! It is such a beautiful place, outside of the town!

Truly, I think its important for kids to see what I call the "classics" when they're younger, "Carlsbad Caverns, Yellowstone Park, the Grand Tetons, Jackson Hole, the Grand Canyon..."

It's important for kids to camping and hunting and fishing at least a couple of times. It's important to take care of a dog when you're growing up.

There are certain things you should experience when you're a child. And there are certain responsibilities you should have under your parents' watchful eyes before you can be expected to perform them on your own.

I just started watching this show and loved the bridal fashion show. You have an unbelievable figure but re. your face, ahem, your upper and (esp.) lower lip doesn't move. Why don't women realize that big lips really aren't that attractive? Did every famous woman we admire have big lips besides Angelina? You might also look good as a redhead btw. However, maybe you should not think that Sophi is the only one of your children that has not disappointed you. Can you imagine how that must sound? We all learn from our mistakes & we all make them. Another thing is that I am so happy for you but be....grateful and humble. It is not all about you. You have a wonderful life but it won't mean anything if your kids are not there. Appreciate George as you already know men like him don't come a dime a dozen. He is a rare gem, hold on to him tight and be good to him.

Lauri -- I spent my entire childhood traveling in an RV and saw all of the US, Canada, and Mexico. I think what you did by taking the family on that trip was something wonderful. I grew up in Orange County and had all of the luxuries that come along with it. I feel so privileged to have grown up in a family whose parents were married for 50 years (before my mom passed on, and my father is 80 now and still gowing strong.) Just because we grow up in, or live in, an upper class community doesn't mean that we shouldn't expose our children to nature. My husband and I live full time in our RV and while my husband holds down a regular job, I haul or drive RV's for people across the country (i.e., they purchase a custom made rig from Indiana and I drive it to California for them.) My parterner, Roxy, is a 10 lb. Chiauaua mix who loves to climb in the truck to go for a ride. I feel blessed by the adventures that my parents took me (and my 6 other siblings) on and I know that your kids will never forget what you did for them. Camping is not a dirty word and I think every family should make it a part of their vocabulary. Hats off to you for driving; and, when your are as naturally beautiful (on the inside and out) like you are, it is fun to try the adventure without the five star hotel. I hope other women learned a lesson from what you did and will give it a try. Best of luck to you and George -- it looks like you found the right recipe this time around.

You seem to be impressed by all of the material things in the relationship, spending "his" money for your entire wedding, having your entire family live in "his" home, but again, if he wasn't wealthy, would you be so anxious to get married if he were a nice, loving, blue collar worker, I seriously doubt it.

Hello Lauri, I'm a big fan of the show, I know not many men are, but after i read about how much your children loved yellowstone I thought you might want to know about an incredibly gorgeous place that I think you and the rest of your family will love. It's the supirior hiking trail. It's a well cared for trail that's over 200 miles long, don't worry there are many breaks in the trail so you don't have to spend an entire month traveling it. The trail travels the lake supirior coastline in minnesota up by and in duluth, the views are just as or more spectacular than yellowstone, I've been there the poor mans way, you can day-hike or camp along the many sites. some of the places are easier to get to than others but the views are simply spectacular on a clear day, I recommend going between the beggining of june to the midddle of july. If you go it is an expirience you wont soon forget, for the better of course, I have traveld the trail many times and recommend trekking the split rock river part of the trail. My pastor and I are members of the trail orginization and strongly believe that camping along the trail is a worrth while expirience that is also a well kept secret, many know about it but not enough, I strongly recommend going for at least two days. Or at least go around supirior if or when you decide to take your children to see mt. rushmore. Oh and one more thing, most RV's have a backup camera in them so you can see behind you without sticking your head out to timbukto. I thought i saw a monitor on the middle dash board but either yours or Georges daughter was sittig on it. I hope your marriage lasts you for the rest of your life. good by.
