I will keep this relatively short(er) because I am in Hawaii wrapping the finale, and I have not slept much in the past four days.
This episode was a flashback to the gas station challenge ... I happen to love challenges like this, because it forces me to think outside of the box. And believe me, I have come home, relatively intoxicated, many a night to bizarre and somewhat random ingredients in my cupboards. The mark of a true chef is the 3:00 a.m. challenge.
So flash forward to the amuse bouche vending machine challenge. First of all, “madness?" Yes. Thank you, Sam. “Any self respecting chef blah blah blah blah”?
I’ve heard just about enough from Ms. Pastry Chef Extraordinaire. Anyone who studied last season would realize that the challenges are unconventional, and the purpose is to make the contestants uncomfortable, but also to inspire them to bring their best creatively. It is an attitude that even Harold had to adopt and that would eventually lead him to victory.

Lee Ann, I just want to say how great it is that you are participating in this year's production! You and Harold were my favorites from last year and I would have been happy if you had won! Congrats on losing the weight - it is so easy to put on and hard to take off! I am working on that, too. Thanks for your insights into the competition. It is fun to watch the personalities interact under pressure - glad it is them and not me! But, I wish that the language wasn't such an issue. It seems worse among the teams this year so far. I have to TIVO the show to watch after the kids are in school ... or stay up late at night! I know it adds to the drama - but I wish the show were more "family friendly" that way. Thanks again for your comments!

AMEN.
I have to admit, this season is losing me. If I want to listen to people bicker, I'll go home for the holidays (actually, I'm kidding, but you get my point).
This second season crowd is remarkably unappealing--it doesn't really seem to be about the food at all, just throwing people under the bus in order not to be eliminated.
There are exceptions--Cliff and Sam come to mind--but I'm so over the rest of them, even Hyperly Cheerful Betty.
Hope things turn around, because this is not working for me.

If they cannot handle the 'heat' so to speak then definetely need to 'get out of the kitchen'. These chef's are all talented or they wouldn't be there...but one wonders if every time they are confronted with not doing their best, the whine or say someone else cheated, how will they be in a 'real' work situation, who will want to work with them or respect their decisions in the kitchen.

This season is just pissing me off with all this - "Ooo you took something from the store without paying" - and "OH there are squirt bottles of olive oil on the counters" and "WAH my oil isn't hot enough..." wah wah wah! Enough already! Just COOK!

You make a good point that the cooks (not chefs yet) should call out issues while they are in the competition and not wait until they are at judges table... The extra sugar into the cookies wouldn't go over the 500 calories...it wasn't enough to add that many calories to each cookie. But at the judge's table, the chefs are constantly critisized for not changing the recipe if it doesn't work. I think Betty just was trying to "Make it Work".

Why shouldn't Sam call that out to the judges especially when he is called to the mat for not adjusting his smoothie before serving.

Love your blogs! Love Top Chef....absolutely love it! I actually crave this show! I watched this episode twice already and, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Betty's idea to make pizza for the Camp Glucose kiddies...not Frank? As a matter of fact, if you watch when Suzanne Goin asks Team Black whose idea it was to make the pizza both Betty and Frank raise their hands and Betty plays it off by putting her hand to her chin and letting Frank take the credit resulting in Frank being named the individual challenge winner. Kudos to Betty for being a true team player. You go girl….they would have really hated you if you had won THREE challenges in a row!!
Marcel is a riot! This fool was ready to serve asparagus and “thinly sliced” prosciutto ham to a bunch of 8-18 year old kids. Hilarious!!
I completely understood where Betty was coming from with thinking she was staying within the 500-calorie range when she adjusted her meringue cookie recipe by reducing the amount of egg whites and using 2 tablespoons of sugar when she had used Splenda the day before. It was an honest mistake and I don’t feel that she thought she was intentionally bending the rules.
I am extremely disappointed in Mia. For her to throw Betty under the bus voluntarily and then not fess up to it later and act like an innocent bystander was such a cowardly move. And as much as I don’t care for Marisa, I’m glad when she brought up the fact that this made Mia look hypocritical. Side note: if I hear Mia say the word “awesome” one more time, I think I’m going to hurl!
I still feel that Michael should have been the one sent home….he is simply out of his element and doesn’t want to be there. Hello, the man goes around carrying a pair of his wife’s panties - that’s homesickness at the most extreme if I ever saw it. And at each and every challenge he acts like he could care less. He actually served Cheetos in a Snicker mound for a top-notch chef challenge and thought that was acceptable as an amuse bouche? Last week he went over the $100 budget and decided to return $2 cheese which would have made his Steak Sandwich dish sing and instead decided to keep his $8 beer? Michael has no priorities or ambition when in comes to this competition whatsoever. Please show that man the door!!! Just my .02.

You said it right! I've been posting on the TC2 blog and the thing I just can't get away from is that this season seems LESS about the food. It feels like they picked this season's contestants for diversity of personality.
There are a couple of good contenders this season, but seems like they are being more challenged by the challenges than they are each other. Is Michael really a threat to Cliff, Ilan or Sam? (Sorry Mike). Last season, I couldn't wait to see what you, Harold, Tiffany and Dave were gonna do. Stephen, too, with his amazing presentations.
Is it the casting? Is it the editing? Is the challenges? I don't know. I just really feel let down this season because it feels like drama with cooking sprinkled in the background, rather than vise versa. I mean, look at the editing at the firehouse. If you blinked, you'd have have completely missed seeing Carlos, Mia, Josie, etc bring their dishes out or see the plates. THAT is because Bravo spent half the show with the stupid drama between Betty and Marcel.

However, even though I had my favorites of the group, nothing compares to the blatant backstabbing of this one. I feel as if the editing team has purposely edited out all of the footage of positive interactions between contestants to posit them as being overtly antagonistic towards one another. Ya'll had your beefs, but even the bickering was appreciably brotherly/sisterly compared to this nonsense. Marissa had so many opportunities in challenges to step up & show off her pastry skills. Honestly it would be hard for a pastry chef to survive all the way in this competition. Kudos to her if she does... but if she get kicked off soon she has done nothing to defend her title of Pastry Chef. She should have also immediately confronted Otto about the lychees issue & not wait until they got back in the kitchen. It made her look like she deliberately set Otto up. I think your time is up girl!
The Betty & Marcel saga was a little childish but the important thing is that they made up & were able to work as a team. It was big of Betty to own up about her behavior toward Marcel. However, Mr. Moleculor Gastronomy should ease up - don't think you're above everyone.

There seems to be more focus on the other person rather than the actual contest and the joy of food and the hopes of winning. Don't misunderstand, I am not talking about all of them. About Betty and other cheaters:
They (judges or someone else in charge of this show) should have left the nutritionists there on the 2nd day. If they had done so, there wouldn't have been any cheating. Also teams would have had an opportunity to change their recepie if needed.
I was looking for sugar's nutrition value to check Betty's cookies but didn't find it. According to the nutritionist they had extra 60 Kcal. Batty said she had decreased the amount of egg whites, so they had extra 60 Kcal + (18 Kcal per egg white (33g))/portion. She also said that she had added 2 extra tbs of sugar ~ 50g. If she knew sugar's n.v., they maybe she could calculate, how many times must the cookies be smaller. If she just thought that "(60 + (18 per e.w.)/portion)" = or > 50g sugar/portion, than maybe she was wrong.
I'm not sure what would I do if I were there (I could just panic and forget about everything), but I think I would ask the nutriotionist the day before about the sugar or I would ask judges to "phone" a nutritionist (if that is even possible).

However, I agree with another poster that I'm just over some of these people and Betty is one of them. However, to the poster who said they never disliked someone on any reality show as much as they disliked Tiffani, you obviously didn't watch Project Runway Season 3 because there were plenty of people you would have disliked just as much, and the one I disliked as much as Tiffani was Laura Bennett. Finale time Olympus Fashion week and what she did caused me to rethink my dislike of first season contestant Wendy Pepper and I decided to forgive her because she was a nice person in comparison and her final collection was better than Bennett's season 3 one. Forgiveness is possible when someone worse comes along. I had hoped that Top Chef 2 wouldn't follow in the pattern of PR3, but to a certain extent it has, although it's not quite as bad yet. As long as family members aren't invited it in as the customers, I'm fine. Hopefully, the final 3 or 4 won't be made up of chefs who try to get each other booted for cheating. Yes, I too wish they would stop complaining about each other and just cook so they will stop sounding like that other Bravo competition reality show and its season 3.

Has no one taken note of the fact Betty admitted in either her interview video or on an earlier program she used to be an actress? Much of her behavior is contrived, and she has the wide-eyed, toothy-smile with ear-piercing scream-act down to a science. I also find her inability to take what she dishes out revealing where it concerns Marcel. To me, Marcel, being only 26 to her 40-something, is more "real" and honest than she really is. Yes, he is arrogant, but rightfully in some ways as he IS talented. He just needs some experience in tact and humility which is forgiveable given his youth. What's HER excuse for being immature and irritating and unable to accept responsibility for her mistake in that brulee? She tries to blame Marcel, showing her own selfishness and inability to act as an adult. I don't see how she could, in all good conscience (if she has any - I don't think she was that innocent in that calorie counting episode; remember that she used to be an actress. . .) keep that act going. It makes me gag. . . Even Chef Tom is on to her and has called her on her "comfort food" excuses.
Then we have Frank, who is a pig from all appearances, and all Marcel did was clean up after him. I'd be sick of someone leaving their things all over the place, too, and Frank was lucky Marcel didn't just pitch everything into the trash! The toothbrush was in the toiletry bag, which was on the floor, but everyone else got the impression Marcel just swept everything off the table the way Frank probably would have. In my opinion, we've got some really immature older cooks here who forget what it's like being young themselves, as though they were so perfect and knew everything when they were Marcel's age. Mia's true character comes through each time the camera focuses on that stoney face when she doesn't win, or when she's saying nasty things about someone. All I can say is the older cooks in this season's cast are either spiteful, selfish, or narcissistic, all traits Tiffany demonstrated for us (but then, she was only what, 28?) Kudos to Ilan and Cliff for maintaining their "nice guy" images. I believe Ilan, Sam, and Cliff will definitely make it to the finals, with the final position up for grabs between Marcel or Elia. I can't wait for Betty to get asked to pack her knives.
