"The Indians say, ‘When the forest dies, we all die’".
This is a quote from a 1991 music video. What have we learned in the sixteen years since, and how have we put those lessons to use towards the conservation of our earth? Paula Abdul's video for her single, "Promise of a New Day", ended with this quote. I remember being immersed in her work from an early age. "Straight Up" was everyone’s favorite choreography to learn when I was a boy. The video for "Cold Hearted Snake" conjured images of one of my other soon to be dance icons: Bob Fosse!
You see, many years before I was a designer, I was a dancer and performer. The world of the theatre has been a great inspiration in my creative evolution. I remember doing countless shows, studying piano, dancing for two to four hours every day after my studies. I also remember the very conscious efforts of people around the world trying to bring awareness to the betterment of the earth. I remember writing poetry influenced by my environment, by things I would observe in nature.

Wow, you said a lot this week darling. I envy dancers everywhere. I was never blessed with the gift of movement. And as for the environment, in Venice, people refuse to build the city up anymore for fear that it will harm the lagoon. Can you believe that? Instead of living, let's just sink so it doesn't harm the earth! They're much more concious of our planet there I think. Aww, Malan on a float. I hope you blew kisses to the crowd darling! Love love!

Aw, Malan, it's wonderful to hear that in addition to all the other causes you support, you also support recycling and the preservation of our beautiful earth. Thank you for promoting such amazing things in your blog-- you're making a huge difference.

Dearest Malan.... as usual, you view of the world has its own unique and fabulous perspective! Though it has been a year (has it really?) since we first saw you on Project Runway, you remain unforgettable and compelled us to know more about you.
As usual, life through your eyes, is colorful and romantic. Reading about your attitude towards the environment and recycling makes one feel utterly accountable. You're right. Here in Palm Springs and surrounding villages, we have to separate our trash and my partner and I make sure we do our part, but credit goes to fully to our communities who encourage us and provide us with the proper recepticles. They make it so much easier for us.
By the way, you must come to the Parker Hotel here in Palm Springs. After Bravo TV airs "Welcome to the Parker" on July 26th, the secret will be out that it's the most elegant and chic place in the desert to visit. We just love going to the cafe for lunch! John, the concierge, always greets us by name when we arrive. I am always hoping I will run into Jonathan Adler! Last year we walked past Charleze Thereon, who is even more radiant in life, as she entered the lobby. I always recommend my clients stay there and they never disappoint.
Looking forward to the next installment, Malan! Stay glamorous!

What a wonderful blog this week!! Kudos to you for your efforts in saving our environment. How exciting that you were able to meet, and dance, with Paula Abdul a few years ago. I've always liked her and remember watching her videos when I was in school trying to learn the steps that she did. It sounds like you've had an absolute ball over the last few weeks!!

i'm sorry to admit, malan, but i'm not very good in recycling. now energy, and water, i will conserve them. and the trash around my neighborhood i always take the time to clean it up. but recycling my garbage? i'm lousy. i WILL do better.
you never cease to amaze me. what can't you do? you are so multi-talented: fashion designing, singing, voice-overs, dancing, and dancing...but piano? i had no idea.

Lovely Malan, you are so right about our need to conserve the beauty we still have today for future generations. We should not let our greed and need to consume overcome us.
And...it's so nice of you to give props to Paula. She deserves a lot more understanding that she gets.
I hope you are having a wonderful summer, despite your allergies. :)

Malan- So many of the things you wrote about are important to me! You should see my vegetable garden - on of the benefits of living in Wisconsin is a lot of space and wonderful soil to grow things. I've already started eating my squash and zucchini! And with my fair skin, I think I could buy sunscreen in bulk. I think people look so fake and silly with suntans. It's a shame that we all can't be happy with the skin we have. On top of that, I use only local grocers/farmers for the food we buy.
I hope you inspired more people to make some changes in their lifestyle. I think that if we all just made a few changes, the overall difference would be huge.
Thanks for being who you are and doing what you do. You bring beauty in the world whether it be though your designs or your words.

Wow! I can't believe it's almost been a year since I started following your career! We've both come so far!! I live vicariously through your career and social life which is going amazingly well, and I've achieved my dream of becoming a full fledge animal rescue. Of course, you are going to make tons of money and be wildly famous and sought after and I'm probably going to wind up a penniless old crazy dog lady. But, as they say..whatever floats our respective boats, right! LOL! Continued success, my friend!!

Thank you so much Malan for continuing to follow your dreams and live your life for bettering others and the world around you. So many of us forget this in our lives, to just try to do some good. While at the lake this weekend, everyone was smiling and in a fantastic mood of positive feeling. In the city a person can loose that. Recycle and conserve, and support our open spaces and parks. Even just picking up trash, a water bottle left behind by others, can help. Plastic doesn't decompose as other materials. Thanks for your messages. They help me keep at my dreams of being a writer.
