All About Carisa and Matt

This episode is all about Carisa and Matt -- literally.

margaret_110_01_320x240.jpg

Bravo gave them $12,500 cash, a furniture/accessory memo budget of $150K at the Pacific Design Center, the assistance and wisdom of their favorite carpenter plus the opportunity to hire more help, and two full months with which to design a loft for the client they should know best: themselves.

Kelly, Jonathan, our superchic guest judge Trudie Styler, and I were totally awestruck by what they created.

Shockingly unkind...Uhhh you need to look in the mirror and confront the brutal facts on that one, Miss Margaret....

catty, you are. But the right decision was made. Matt's rooms have rocked and subtle chic is fine with a lot of people.

Dear Margaret,
You are so refined and I enjoyed watching you on every episode of top design. Matt in my opinion does have the top design but I feel I have seen so many of his furniture layouts and colors used before. Carissa is very creative her color choices in my opinion are some times too shocking. At, first I wanted Matt to win, then I saw Carissa's loft with the bed and the shelving screen it made me so excited I was shocked and I love her loft. What happens to these lofts now? Can I buy them both? And what is Carissa doing? Also, best wishes to you and Matt with the September issue of Elle...

loved show. You judges had a really hard job this week. Both contestants did a bang up job. Glad I did not have to judge. I was shocked that I liked Clarissa this week. She has nothing to be ashamed of of(you go girl). I would use you any time as wel as Matt.
Matts loft was awesome and very much the style that I agree with. Fabulous, fabulous Matt.
Thanks for a fantastic and fun show. Hope we see another one next season. Everyone was great and gave me weeks of fun and enjoyment.

Great show. I hope it returns for another season, and I hope Margaret returns with it. I think it would be great if she co-judged with Marion McEvoy.
I love Trudie Styler as much as the next guy, but why was she a guest judge? Seriously? Why not Bill Sofield? Thomas O'brien? Albert Hadley? There are a million better guest judges!

Margaret - I loved your comments throughout the series, your taste is impeccable, and I love your eye for all important details. I'm so grateful that the judges took into consideration Carisa's re-use of furniture already seen in the show (those comments didn't make it in the show and I really thought it was tacky of Carisa). Thanks for the education throughout the series.

Matt..what can I say about your design you haven't already heard? It was superb as I knew it would be.Thank you Bravo TV for some awesome shows to follow,,Top Chef is my absolute favorite.Thamnk you Maragret for allowing me to add my comments to your wonderful Blogs, you are a beautiful CLASSY Lady.

This episode was decided long before the designers ever designed their lofts. Margaret had Matt picked from the beginning and he knew it. He played her every step of the way. By the end of the season, I found Matt's work to be boring and predictable. To me, Carisa really matured and progressed as a designer. It would've been much more fun to see you reward someone for taking chances (Carisa) rather than being safe and sure with Matt.

Having said that, I love this show and will continue watching next season! Maybe we can get rid of Margaret???

Margaret, I thought throughout the show you had a succinct, thoughtful and keen commentary for each of the contestants that not only was fitting to the challenge at hand, but also really taught me, as a viewer, how to sharpen my own design sights. I'm sure you've been criticized by people for your honesty, but I thought you were charming, balanced and thoroughly knowledgeable. Just a pleasure!

I have to say that I was impressed by both lofts, great personalities carried within, and I agree with the judges' decision. Margaret, I gained a great deal more about the decision by reading your blog - I understand that editing has to be done to accommodate tv drama, but as a design student your remarks add so much more. My issue with the show has been my own frustration at not being able to walk through the spaces, so I appreciate hearing your reaction and comparisons of the two.

My one question to throw out there is this - Trudi Styler mentioned Matt didn't use his space as effectively/successfully (something along those lines). I'm not sure where this was? Thanks.

Today, we had a field trip to the Design Center in Washington, DC.(So much fun!) Thanks BRAVO for a fun and informative show that we can all learn from! If you ever come to Baltimore/Washington area, please email me so that we can all meet. Hello, Margaret,

Great show!! Bravo to you and all the judges for bringing consistent objectivity and articulate aesthetic analysis to such a complex challenge . It was enlightening and made me wish I'd followed a different career.

Of all the competitions on Bravo, this one was "Top Drawer." As a viewer, I'm grateful to your producers for having been spared the incessant interpersonal dramas which were granted such a high priority on Top Chef and Project Runway.

Not one for reality TV, I've never been hooked on a reality show, let alone posted to a 'blog... but the Margaret Russell Show completely drew me in this season. This little Midwestern editor is going to miss that weekly dose of your brilliant sense of style -- you're really made television fun! Martha Stewart meets Prada meets Dorothy Parker -- who wouldn't love to watch? I hope you'll be back for another season. Thanks for the smart entertainment!

Everything you wrote in your blog really showed who you truly are - simply honest and remarkable. I can't agree more with your judgment tonight. Carisa has great style and it speaks so much of herself, but to have the title Top Design, it needs to be polished. She definitely will have the Top Design in the future. Matt is just the clear Top designer today!

This episode was unquestionably my favorite. Both lofts were very attractive! In fact, it looked like a difficult decision!
Once again, your blog explains what the episode did not- the wonderful details that Matt placed in his space and that were lacking in Carissa's. Now, I completely understand your decision!
Thank you for your logical, clear headed commentary! And thank you for looking stunning during every episode! I covet every item in your beautiful wardrobe!

Obviously, this competition was over when you eliminated Andrea. There might have been some suspense in this week's show if Andrea had remained because Andrea would have given Matt some competition. Carisa was a joke.

Kelly had it right. Matt's designs are monochrome. If you love black and white, you love Matt. The only time he had a lot of color was when he chose pink for his girl's room. How creative. I was surprised you liked the eggplant color that Matt used. I didn't think you liked that color.

Deborah Miller wrote:

I've watched Top Design from the beginning and I must say that although Matt did execute several of the top designs, the final design was not his best nor was it the best, Carisa should have won. Matt was disappointing. Like some of his less popular designs, his design missed the mark, not only in the bedroom which was pointed out, but also in the kitchen. Not only was the layout disappointing, his child's room could have been more spacious and better accessorized or interesting. And, although he did have familial touches, the transition from one room to the next seemed choppy. Instead each room seemed planted and cold like an industrial showroom, very much unlike some of the other chic designs he created. The curtains Matt used to separate private areas from public areas were similar to the theatre curtains used in the garage design, theatrical and tacky. Trudie's comments were on the mark... the glass tables was inappropriate for a four year old and the bedroom was not sexy. Margaret commented that Carisa's room seemed more like a loft and no one lived there, but I disagree. Carisa's design represented Carisa, a young single person fun person who enjoys life and an open and contemporary floorplan with flair, entertaining friends, and working at home. Carisa's design exhibited this. As most people know, single young people don't exhibit the same taste as a married man with a wife and child. I think Margaret related more to Matt because his design reflected her status...matured. Too bad for Carisa. Margaret doesn't seem to like stepping too far outside the box to appreciate fresh ideas, different then her own taste. Margaret more than the others failed to see that in the end, Carisa exhibited a fabulous, outside of the box design that was both refreshing, open, and innovative. I think the other judges failed to speak up and step up for what they really believed based on their critique of Matt and Carisa's design that Carisa had the top design. I collect Metropolitan Home and other decor magazines and Carisa has won my vote. Too bad Carisa didn't get to reap the rewards from her hard work. I believe she should have won unless winning was based on an accumulation of top designs achieved, then Matt won hands down. But, if the show is based on the completion of each design per episode, then in my mind Carisa...You were the final top design, congratulations. The judges were not fair to you....But I appreciate the innovation of your design. I admit on occasion, you did miss the mark, but your last design was your greatest masterpiece and you should have won. Good luck to you Carisa and best wishes to Matt. Bravo, I loved the show.

I invited everyone for 9:00, Sushi and Champagne again, and, I must admit, some of my guests were a little toasted by the time that TOP DESIGN rolled around.
We were THRILLED with this episode! This is what we thought the entire series would look like!!! Three words- FAB U LOUS!!!!
We couldn't believe how great Carissa's room looked!! No one thought she'd pull it off!!! Once again, we all thought that hers looked better, but thank heaven that your blog perfectly explained the differences that we couldn't see on TV! Otherwise, we would have thought that all the judges were crazy! (We will all have nightmares thinking of Jonathan Adler doing anything scandalous on Carissa's bed!! EWWWWW!!!)
No one can believe that it's already over!!! We will miss your beauty, we will miss your poise, we will miss your sexy voice, and we will miss your fabulous fashions!!

Thanks for detailing the outcome. I couldn't watch it last nite, so this is far better. On the plus side, I don't have to listen to Matt's repulsive voice or watch Carisa have a childlike meltdown with Carl.

Let's face it, this finale was not really such a horse race as you implied. Carisa vs Matt??? Oh, puhlease! It's like pairing Betty Boop against the Count of Monte Cristo. Carisa was a cartoon cutout while Matt was a smooth character with a deeper side.

juni wrote:

Thank you for your thoughtful insights throughout this blog. I appreciate my new awareness of design elements in a room. I also relied on you to describe what we could not see out here in TV Land. Matt's loft did not come across as spectacularly as Carissa's.

One thing though: All white upholstery always comes across as beautiful in person and on film--but it is so impractical!! An al-white livingroom in a loft with a 4 year old? Such furniture can be oppressive because of how awul it would look if someone spilled a glass of red wine. Carissa's use of white was fantasy because, if she likes to give parties, white is not the color for entire roomfuls of furniture (including the dining room). For example, I spilled red wine on my friend's new white carpet--and both of us are still traumatized by the event (when we are not laughing about it).

Using the same chairs as Andrea did for the Chef Table challenge was a silly mistake, akin to Carissa's mistakes in dressing herself. Just because everyone is wearing jeans skirts with leggings, doesn't mean you have to. I think those chairs, though they livened up Andrea's room, were the most impractical pieces in the design because of their whiteness. For Clarissa to copy cat that mistake was indeed, a double mistake and probably the biggest flaw in her presentation.

What a truly inspirational series of shows. I enjoyed every one of them. Thank you for the insight intowhy you made the decision you did. For a lay person sitting at home, it is impossible to see the details that you highlighted. Hats off the Carisa. She displayed grace and humility in the face of her loss. Truly the essence of inner beauty. And hatss off the Matt. He is a very talented designer. I found many of his ideas are ones that I would like to incorporate in my space. Sadly, at times his confidence bordered on arrogance but that may have been the product of skillful editing to create drama. All in all, I loved the show and Matt is truly the Top Designer.

About the unkind comments,I rarely scroll thru comments anymore (as I used to) because of the great number of "I'll never watch this show again" posts and the personal attacks on contestants and judges. I like to think those posts (especially the latter) represent a vocal minority of viewers.

As for some of the comments you have received thus far, I want to quote from one of my favorite Jimmy Stewart movies: "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart.
I recommend pleasant."

I fear the internet has culled our necessary social skills and I am sorry for the things that were said to you and about you for simply doing a job. Try not to take them to heart for their unwarranted comments speak of their own shortcomings - not yours.

Ms. Russell I really thought you showed remarkable restraint during the show. I could not believe one interchange between you and the contestant. I was screaming at the tv for the contestant to shut his mouth...the look that you had..was priceless. I applaud you on how you handled the situation. Anyway you were a great judge and your delivery of criticism and praise was always very professional. I really admire that quality. Constructive criticism is crucial. How it is delivered is just as important. Give yourself a huge pat on the back!

I agree with Ms. Carisa that the outcome was the best possible. Frankly, I don't know how you make a "correct" choice between two such wildly different designers--one of the things I loved about this show. It's actually the first time I've watched a BravoTV reality show where I wasn't throwing pillows at the TV because the person I thought should win didn't. For all you folks who think it's cool to bash Carisa for knowing her heart and expressing it verbally and in her design, well, grow up. Her style and her attitude are "fierce" and young...ummm...because she's fierce and young. I wish I knew myself as well as she seems to at that age. And talk about a graceful winner--love you Carisa, best of luck!

I didn't like Matt's design at all except for the eggplant paint in the bathroom. I think he turned the LOFT into a boring apartment. It didn't flow, it was all chopped up. Carissa's design was young and elegant. It wasn't stuffy like Matt's. I think she put alot more effort, staying up all night long, into her design. I would much rather live in Carrisa's loft than Matt's.
As for Matt's character, I think he is a JERK. He's comments on Sting's wife not being qualifed to judge were completely unfounded. By the way Matt, clean out your ears. She has decorated their 8 HOUSES NOT 4. Then that comment about "as for her husband, he can play me a song", that was completely immature and show no class. So are you jelous that they have all that talent and money and you don't.
Carrisa was a completely gracious loser and Matt was a completely arrogant winner. "Was there ever any other choice, Really." That comment was enough to throw me over the edge. Was he always such a jerk? I think Matt is just a two faced, immature Ass. I don't think he deserved to win in the first place and now seeing his true personality I certainly would not have voted for him. I wouldn't even hire him to paint my bathroom or sing me a song. And by the way, what is up with his voice cracking everytime he was infront of the judges. It drove me crazy. I am an avid reader of ELDECOR but I know one issue I will refrain from purchasing.

Matt deserved to win but I will say that Carissa did a wonderful job. I have not been her biggest supporter all season but I was very proud of what she accomplished this week.

Matt is just functioning at a higher level right now but I have no doubt that in a few years Carissa will be at that level too.

Jim Griffin wrote:

Both lofts were fabulous! Not surprising, each loft reflected Matt and Carissa. Watching Margaret "inspecting" Carissa's bed was a joy to watch! I, too, found her bed to be a wonderful surprise. I loved her monochromatic design. As I said last week, the fact that she is a young interior design student who got to the finals speaks volumes for her abilities. Carissa has a bright future. She was genuinely grateful for the opportunity that "Top Design" gave her. Carissa is a winner in my book!

Congratulations Matt for a another understated, sophisticated design. Matt's planning while home in Chicago certainly was a plus! It is always best to have a plan. The flowers floating in the bowls on the glass dining room table was beautiful! The personal photos, especially the series Matt did of his wife and daughter really personalize the loft. I disagree with the guest judge, Trudy Styler, regarding the bedroom. I loved the simplicity of the space. He designed the room for himself, not Trudie. I, too, loved the room he created for his four-yearl old daughter. I agree with Matt - what little girl wouldn't love a $7,000 desk! Congratulations again, decorator Matt! Your loft is beautiful.

I thoroughly enjoyed each episode. The judges represent the best in the design world - and their feedback showed this to be true throughout the season. I would love to have drinks with all of them....how fun would it be to sip cocktails with Jonathon, Todd, Margaret and Kelly al fresco!

bf wrote:

Margaret...as always your blog is incredibly helpful in understanding what the judges process really was. Reading this should give anyone a much clearer view of why Matt was picked as the Top Designer (which I agreed with) even though we didn't really get to see enough of either loft to really understand all of the details. Not sure why you all were so down on Matt's kitchen - as someone who is serious about cooking I would totally have gone with the killer pro-model stove and vent hood that he selected even though Carissa's slide-out vent hood looked really cool. I'm not sure how much cooking Trudy Styler does but I'm sure that most of her 8 homes have similarly outfitted kitchens (for their staff to use...). Thanks again for at least one blog that is well edited and to the point. As much as I love both Todd and Jonathan Todd can't bear to be critical of anyone and Jonathan tends to wander a bit off point. That's whay it's always good to have an editor!

Dear Margaret,

First and foremost, I've appreciated your editorial point of view over the past weeks. It has been nice to read something written by an experienced editor and writer who can articulate concepts beyond just the judges quips. I've also greatly enjoyed your wit. And your wardrobe, not for nothing.

Second, I appreciate your shock at the wingnuts on the web. The general social problem of incivility combined with the anonymity of the web creates a perfect environment for rudeness to run amok. In addition, there are more specific causes that could be changed (if that is desired) such as the editing of Top Design and material on Bravo's own web site.

- Reality television itself fosters a lot of the ugliness and anger. When that sort of "drama" is stressed (yelling, fighting, preferring obnoxious personalities over actual talent, i.e. Ryan) then why be surprised when viewers respond in kind?

- The judges comments can sometimes be very harsh and that can also fuel the ire of viewers. Even though it seems silly to get angry over a television show perhaps this kind of passion is what keeps viewers tuned in.

- The general tone of fan blogs is one of biting humor (such as televisionwithoutpity.com, which Bravo just purchased). Sometimes the humor is lost in translation. One activity on fan blogs is to rewrite the show for their own amusement. It isn't a personal attack; it's an imaginative fan activity that is separate from the actual people on the show.

- Finally, the worst that I've read on the web comes from the Bravo site itself. The comments written by The Assistant about the contestents have been the most virulently unkind and are especially inappropriate because he is an employee not a fan. His writings about Carisa in particular have passed beyond shockingly unkind and into the realm of virulently misogynist. (One wonders if someone would be able to get away with writing things that homophobic or racist on the Bravo site.)

I think that the first place to address the issue of writing cruel, tasteless, and offensive comments about people on the show is right here on Bravo's own web site.

Jenny wrote:

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Top Design. I looked forward to each weekly show. I did find it interesting how the judges decided who they were going to eliminate and some times thought they did not eliminate the right person. I sensed at times a little favoritism for certain individuals. Although I like Matt's style, I didn't feel as though he had the Top Design over Carissa. His spacial layout did not flow as Carissa's did and his color scheme was broken up. Carissa's layout was much more fluid and the color and design throughout was consistent and perfect for a single woman her age. It was almost as if Matt was favored. The judges had no negative comments on Carissa's design but did mention some with Matt's design. Yet, they gave Matt Top Design.

Stacy wrote:

Thank you so much for your insights into the show itself. All too often the camera is caught up in the drama of the situation rather than the design. Without you I found it very hard to abstract the designs from the behavior of the designers.

Maybe this was a "you had to be there" situation, but what you saw and loved was Matt's hotel bedroom and the body of his work, and through that lens, I think, found reason to fault Carisa for not having books on her shelves. You also saw that entire rooms (kitchen, bedroom) had to be amped up in Matt's design, but found Carisa's design to be underaccessorized. I don't think I disagree that Matt is/was the more impressive designer throughout the course of the series, but if you were going to award the Top Designer based on the final challenge, I think you should have seen past your antipathy for Carisa's "drama", and lying on that brilliant bed, looked out those windows and seen the big picture.

Michael wrote:

Again Carisa's loft looked like a first apartment. Black painted room dividers, a ping pong table, cork board wall...just this side of dorm room. And that bed. You should have made her try to get in an out of it. I doubt you'd get a good night's sleep in it or beable to do "anything" else in it. Besides, she swiped the concept from Goil.

Matt did a great job. He turned an empty space into a home not a cliche. His taste may not be my taste, but he did a wonderful job.

I enjoyed this show, more so than Top Chef, but it was not quite as exciting as I had hoped. How is it a challenge to design a space for yourself with an enormous budget (i could buy a condo in Chicago for the amount they spent on supplies and furnishings). I would have been interested to see the designers have to plan a space for eachother... then critique that space with the judges... that would have been more telling as a designer. I am hoping the producers are holding out for more shocking moments in the next season.

I must say I wasn't the least bit shocked that Matt won this contest. It was evident from the start that he would win, not on his merit, but because it was obvious he was a personal favorite of you and the other judges. I found him to be arrogant and obnoxious...not confident. His designs were so predictable, week after week he pumped out the very same color schemes and designs. He never stepped outside his comfort zone and by the end of this show I was truly bored with his designs. As for Carisa...what talent!! Her loft was exciting....colorful and bold, yet delicate and luxurious. I'd hire her in a NY minute. And as for attitude... she didn't yipe or gripe anymore than the others. Andrea was catty. And as for Matt... I guess we should all be glad he won. I'd hate to find out he cried, died, or moved to Mexico and became a drunk. Gawd.

I'm dissapointed. I didn't think Matt deserved to win although his taste is usually closer to mine than Carisa's. His loft didn't flow, it was kind of boring, the splashes of color in the flowers weren't enough, and the kitchen was spastic. No imagination! It looked like he duplicated the showroom of a furniture store. The little girls room was magical, for a 10 year old, not a 4 year old, too grown up. What little girl wouldn't love a $7,000 desk? A 4 year old, it was completely impractical, the first magic marker spot and it is ruined. Yes, the loft was sophisticated, but dull.

Carisa's on the other hand, which usually I wasn't crazy about, was also sophisticated, young, fresh, and more inviting. The flow was great, each room led you to another. The kitchen, not my taste, also flowed and drew you in, somewhere you would want to spend time. She used just the right amount of color. I didn't care for the pit bed, but it worked for her style. She used a bit more imagination. O.K., so she didn't use family photo's to score brownie points, but the design's weren't about precious pictures. I think the wrong person won! If the win would have come down to graciousness, Matt definitely would have lost. He needed his high horse knocked off it's pedastal!

I hope there will be a next season and can't wait to watch!

This episode was the best of all, and if I have any complaint, it's that we rarely got to see how many of the things were accomplished. The lofts were both beautiful, though I did think Matt's was more livable.
Carisa's bed was lovely, but I for one could not get into, or out of, it! But as you said, the loft was for her.
(I, too, would like to know what happens to these lofts after the show.)

Was the top design final episode based on cumulative aacomplishments or strictly on who did a better job on the final loft project? If it was the later, Carisa should have won hands down - Matt's "loft" did not look like a lof at all and he completely detracted from the urban feel of the space. Carissa's loft was desinged in the true fashion of a loft, and if I had the choice of moving into the two it would have been hers hands down. Her kitchen was more stylish, the sunken bed was whimsical and creative but still managed to be elegant and creative. Matt's cocky attitude at the end was certainly not justified as his desings were always very predictable and boring - - yes he has good taste in furniture, but there is more to good dedsign than just shopping for the most expensive pieces. You need to learn how to be daring to set your desings apart without being tacky, and Carissa took those risks. It worked for her sometimes, but not always, but it DEFINATELY worked in her loft and she, in my opinion, was the clear winner of Top Design.

And congratulations to Matt! His level of work throughout the competition was superior to Carissa's.

Margaret YOU are the smartest judge by far. You are elegant, accurate in your opinions and an woman who's own personal style should be a show on BRAVO. I was always impressed by your sophistocation in dress and manner. Your hair is gorgeous tasteful, sleek and you are a modern day brunette Grace Kelly. You inspire women to look hot at any age-without looking trashy. And I wish more women could capture that feminine confident sensual but professional sense of style you have. THAT is what Bravo should be thinking about- showing this kind of beauty and not trying to peddle the teenagers with lowriders and thong hanging out their ass. Teach women to dress like this. NOW - Carissa Honey.... I wanted to love you so much because your style was fantastic- but girlfriend....WHY do you dress like that? Are you trying to make yourself less attractive with those glasses on purpose? As a big girl dear, you need to be more aware of your look and choosing clothes and hairstyles that are as lovely, creative, inspired and gorgeous as your designs! Your hair was a messsssssssssss on the finale episode! WHO did that to you? Was it some queen who had a crush on Matt and wanted to make you look silly? Your outfits in the beinning, especially the knits that played off those victorian curves of yours and that wine colored sweater did you more justice than that MATERNITY dress you wore on the finale episode. Go with your gut girl!. Dont let peopl eimpose their noxious ideas on you. There is no way that hair and dress were your idea. their was nothing clean, linear or graphic about it- it was a mess! But Bottom line, Carissa shoulda won. Its a talent competition not a popularity contest. And everything you did was textbook behavior of a responsible leader trying to maintain some positive control of a project. Your were COMPETENT not "bossy". When its your project and your the boss you have a right to be bossy! Who calls decisive men bossy? I'm glad Andrea and her hoffic heair left the building. And the black! It was clear that the winner was chosen before this episode started and that is unfortunate.

Carisa's loft was fresh and exciting and at the end she took a beautiful space and made it fabulous. She kept it feeling like a loft and it was very open even as it had places with distinct purposes. I particularly liked how she echoed the paned windows with her wall, with the mirrors and with the white dining chairs. The fact that someone else used the chairs is irrelevant because the shape of the chairs and the color worked perfectly within Carisa's design. Should she have passed on these chairs for ones that did not echo the paned windows simply because someone else had used them before? I think not.

The loft was very much Carisa. And I loved it. I would have been happy to move in. The only problem I had was the kitchen. It was definitely not a cook's kitchen. The space around the cooktop was way too tight for anyone to work comfortably. OTHERWISE ....

GREAT GOING CARISA!

Meanwhile we all knew that Matt was the favorite of the judges because he has this overly mature style that replicates what Elle Decor pushes. But while his designs usually have some level of elegance and are polished, they lack oomph and he never made one room that I would want to live in.

In this case, he took a beautiful big space and made it seem small by where he put all the walls. Clearly it would be hard to have an open floor plan when you have a 4 1/2 year old, but to me his loft felt very closed up. The kid's room was small and I thought it was opposite the living room space, so that even when you would close the door, the child would be right on top of all the noise. I would never have given a small child a $7K white desk. Not only would she damage it, but it was too tall for her size and it did not provide a place for her to color or to work on projects. She will outgrow the room very quickly and then the room will require major construction to redo because of that built-in bed cubby. And the room is very very small.

The adult bedroom was more hotel than anything else and I found the curtains bland and the room boring. I know that the judges said that too.

Meanwhile Matt said that when he saw the transom windows he wanted to do something relating to the 40s, but I never got that feel from the finished space. In the end, his loft felt small, tight and uninviting. I did not feel from their comments that the judges were impressed by it either, as much as Margaret's blog takes up for it.

On this challenge Carisa's space won hands down. Way to go Carisa.

I have to say throughout this competittin Carissa's style and creativity bloomed and she has turned into a women with a true sense of original interior style and fashion. I loved her loft because she found a way to take a huge open space, turn it into livable areas, and still have it feel open and huge (which is what living in a loft is about....hello...) She is willing to take chances, maybe not always the best choices (ie the dark wood floor), but she's also new to the game and there is always a learning curve. The loft was stunning and the result of an amazing journey.

Although, Matt is a good interior designer, through the entire season I felt all his work was fussy, overdone and always felt dated, like he's taken a page out of some 50's glamour magazine. No new ideas. His loft's space was really broken up, and with the camera editing, turned a lovely airy space into a rabbit warren of walls. I understood his need to create a space for his daughter, but how could he win this competition by creating a space that had no tie into an overall design. I'd like to know which of the judges thought purple, pink and eggplant somehow created a cohesive color plan. I loved his idea of creating a 40's glamour space, but it was never completely followed through.

One of the previous posters said it all. Matt makes $150,000 look like $300,000. Carissa makes it look like $15,000. Therein lies the essence of what constitutes Top Design. She designs young, hip rooms, definitely geared toward young singles. And how many 20 somethings can afford a decorator in the first place?

Matt's style, with which you are so enamored, struck me as old, stodgy, prissy and sexless. Matt's was nice, but a little gloomy and dull and all chopped up into small spaces. I really think that if this was two or three challenges ago, and the whole prize didn't turn on the outcome of this challenge, Carisa would have won. By the end, he really "Out-Matted" himself by simply doing a parody of his style to the nth degree. His space lacked the airiness that is usually associated with lofts. He was so busy filing the rooms with expensive (albeit inconsequential $7,000 desk for his 4 year old) items. He seemed more like a shopper for the uber-rich than himself.

Carisa struck me as being out of the (Crayola) box or MacDonald's motif to take seriously. Her space was airy and open. It really captured loft living well. However, she added questionable elements (a white fur rug laying on top of her dining room table (Andrea's style), a round bed alone in a room, the bare ping pong table, an empty cork board and so on...

Might as well have gone all the way and put a pillow rake in the sunken bed and hang lettuce from the kitchen chandelier.

Matt's loft appeared surprisingly dark (at least on TV) for a loft space with lots of windows. Still had to give it to him, though.

Margaret Russell is as good as it gets. In NO WAY did she come off on the show as mean/catty/snobby in her judgements, it is ONLY certain bloggers who wanted to see her in that light who made her out as such.

Michael over Laura and Uli in Project Runway, the Top Chef winner, even many of the Top Model winners (not Bravo, but...). And why are are males beating the women so consistently in the finale? Regardless, unlike with Michael on Project Runway, I still liked Matt.

I think you did play a good foil (very Nina Garcia), and often a good counter to the other judges on the show. However, perhaps a bit too focused on what would fit in Elle Decor and what is your perceived luxury. I do think you looked great and was happy to see you seemingly put your pre-conceived notions aside to embrace Carisa (and her sunken bed) but I tell you, I couldn't help but think that you were put off by the fact that she wasn't thin and that, especially at the beginning, you looked at her with a very "she can't go to the Hamptons looking like that" distain.

And in that vain....please tell Jonathon that with those way too colorful outfits and chunky ties he looks like the character in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang that insidicously wrangles up the childen and puts them in the cage. However trendy, not a good look. He seems like he could be fun and snarky; however, the costumes WITH the smile, etc. kinda scare me.

Less shots of the "shopping" at the PDA center...too "Price is Right" to interest. More commentary from the judges during the walk-through would be better. And perhaps more segments where everyone designs the samae room in a condo. there are tons of condos that would relish the attention and it would really allow the contestants to shine with the same space (and like the finale did, challenge them with real walls, windows, views, etc.).

Scrap the "team" challenges. It rarely works for Project Runway or Top Model but truly bored me on Top Design (and likely edited out some good folks too early). think Goil should be a judge next year, or perhaps even the "host." Goil was funny. Todd is just odd...perhaps he helped the contributors more than we saw from the edited show, but his voice, mannerisms, etc. just seemed so off.

With a little refinement, Top Design may become a regular on My TV watch list, along with Top Model and Project Runway, the two shows that have the format down the best. Top Chef, like Top Design, might just need to tweek some of the staff.
line up a bit.

Her bedroom and kitchen were both far superior to Matt's. And her windows were very dramatic. Matt's loft was boring and the spaces seemed small and choppy. The loft did not flow well from one room to another. The rooms did not look particularly inviting or comfortable. I disliked the use of a curtain to separate Matt's bedroom from his living room. While Carissa's bedroom was fun, different and sexy, Matt's bedroom was uninteresting. The only room I really liked in Matt's loft was his bathroom with the eggplant colored walls. I think Carissa got robbed on this particular challenge, but I understand that the judges gave "top designer" to Matt because they believe he is an overall better designer than Carissa, (even though he messed up on the last design). This loft was the only design of Matt's that I did not particularly like. I've adored everything else Matt has done in the previous challenges. I loved Carisa's loft space -- well, the main area with the red wall, at least, and the bedroom. Neither kitchen wowed me, and she really lost me with the ping-pong table room and the bathroom. It seems she either hit it out of the park or came up short, while Matt was more consistent. I was shocked, though, that she used Andrea's dining set-- a bit blatant, no? I mean, it looked great in the space but all you could think of was Andrea's chef's room. I was unable to spot the chair she used that Michael had apparently used before.
