Challenge #9: Couture Challenge

September 6, 2006

I had a few days off because the designers were whisked off to Paris in true Project Runway style -- they had no clue where they were going until the very last minute. I was so interested to hear all about their trip and the "Couture Challenge." Paris is one of my favorite cities and I knew that they would bring back lots of juicy stories.

So, even though the designers were judged on their Couture creations in the City of Lights, they had to re-show here in New York. In the end, the scores from both runway showings were tallied up to determine the winner. I thought that this was a very interesting concept because the designers had the oppportunity to fix what wasn't working in their original design in Paris and re-fit their vision for the judges in New York. You rarely have the opportunity to do that as a designer ... and it can truly help in the end.

In keeping it couture, Laura requested platinum blonde for her model Camilla, an African American woman with very little hair. I could see what she was going for -- I mean it doesn't get any more high-fashion than platinum -- but I didn't feel that look was right for Camilla. After our consultation, I convinced Laura to do something drastic but to stick to her natural coloring because it's gorgeous. Also, if you ask me, Camilla's barely there hair is pretty couture itself.

Kayne wanted his model Amanda to have a full head of ringlet curls. Amanda has beautiful red hair but doesn't have much. So with the help of TRESemme Big Root Boost Root Lift Spray and TRESemme Instant Heat Tamer, I added a couple of rows of curls to add fullness. When it comes to couture, the bigger the better!

I used TRESemme TRES Two Hair Spray -- tons of it -- on everyone to keep their couture looks in place. After the show, I let the designers in on one of my favorite fashion secrets: TRESemme TRES Two Hair Spray not only keeps your hair in place but it keeps your clothes static free! It's a designer's best friend!

It's the first time I've read your blog. Sorry! If anyone had asked me prior to this season of Project R, I would have minimized the effect that the stying has on the outcome. Man, was I wrong and therefore I apologize. Your efforts this year have been extrodinary and have changed the outcome in the competition more than once. Would Vincent have gone before Allison, if she hadn't insisted on the big dumb hair? I'm so glad to have happened on this blog, I love your insight into the show.
