Taking Some Time Off

July 11, 2007

We got an email this morning from Padma that read:

"Due to personal reasons, I will be taking some time off from my blog. I want to thank all of you who have left messages of support for me."

We at Bravotv.com were happy to oblige, but thought we'd put together this photo gallery of her, to tide you over. Enjoy the gallery, and if you'd like to leave a message of support, please feel free.

In the meantime, Ted has written in with a great blog about lobsters and his take on the episode. You can check out Gail's weekly blog (a real trooper that Gail -- writing about an episode she wasn't even in). Lee Anne Wong, as always, has delivered her usual blend of zest and wit.

This headline captured my eye and I was hopeful that the producers had finally come to their senses and had asked Padma to "take time off" from the show.

As a food lover and a general viewer--I can see that she does not have the knowledge or palette to be of value on this show. In fact, her opinion is really not useful and her screen time takes valuable time away from the judges and the guest judges who the viewers are tuned into watch. Yes, she is pretty, but she has no substantial food knowlege to share with the world--so get her off the show!

I would definitely enjoy the show much more if she was “eliminated”—I think Chief Tom would do a great job MCing the show—I don’t think she even needs a replacement.

Hello Padma,

It is a shame that 2 out 3 regular judges are MIA for blogging. Tom is too busy, apparently. However, your issues have been bandied about the newspapers. I won't make any supposition or ask any personal questions because it is really none of my (or any viewers') business. Hopefully, you'll get to have the privacy you desire and the rest you most surely will need.
We'll hear from you when you feel ready to give us your Top Chef perspective. Best wishes to you at this stressful time.

I love this show and watch it religiously... however, so far this season all I have seen of Padma's comments, is her agreeing with what Tom (or someone else) has said... by stating the exact same phrase. I wonder if Padma actually is merely a good looking person to watch, or actually had an opinion of her own... perhaps the show is downplaying her significance???

Stay well, Padma. And for all the other people complaining that she's taken time off, or that Bravo has asked her to leave: she's getting a divorce from her husband. I'm sure that it is a stressful and unpleasant experience, so cut her a break. She'll get through it with grace and polish, just like she is on Top Chef, and she will be back next season better than ever.

'Nuff said.

I can not believe some people want P off the show.

Although she isn't a world reknown chef or has made her mark in the food industry, she offers the average person's point of view. the show needs her because everyone around her knows that the heck they are talking about, I am not saying she is an idiot, but she is the common woman who's opinions reflect those of us are haven't had the opportunity or time to study culinary.

they have judges that know what they are talking about, they need not more.

akzero wrote:

Padma, is bounds and lightyears ahead of Katie Lee. Katie Lee was a mute on the first season. Did she actually comment on anything. I think that Padma has more credibility than Katie Lee as host. Padma might not have the most refined palette, but she brings a layman's view to the show. Not all the viewers can related to the high end "haute" cuisine that is presented.

Also this is a reality show, stop taking it so seriously. Its not a Michelin Award. If its was all really based on being a top chef, they would take other factors in to consideration.

Hopefully Padma can work out here personal issues minus the media fanfare.

Padma,
I hope everything works out for you!!! This season I could tell something was wrong, you looked like you lost some weight and to me you dont have the opinions that you had last season. Everything will work out and I enjoy you sooo much as host of TC. For those who don't think she should be judging, obviously you haven't done your homework.. Padma has published several cookbooks so I think that gives her some knowledge of food!!! . Padma don't listen to the criticism LET YOUR HATERS BE YOUR MOTIVATERS. and " DO YOU".

MICHELLE wrote:

Dear Padma,

Although I do not know you personally, please know I would still like to offer you my sympathy and support during your "personal difficulties" which have been made so public. You are a wonderful host with plenty of knowledgable imput which TC clearly benefits from. I look forward to all your future blogs once you have taken all the time that you need. As for those (NEGAR) who think otherwise, why not just change the channel instead of offering ignorant comments?

Mitch wrote:

I'd like to add one more vote for seeing Padma's departure as hopefully a step toward her removal from the show. I agree with Negar that although she's easy on the eyes, she has absolutely no business offering "expert" opinion. The first season saw her downright nasty and antagonistic without any background to justify such criticism (except authoring a fluff cookbook or two -- just like thousands of other, perhaps less-attractive wanna-be chefs), and although she's mellowed a bit (no doubt due to viewers' complaints), her comments are, on the whole, useless and annoying.

Stick to modeling, Padma, and leave the food commentary to the experts.

Peace.

Erica wrote:

Marty: I completely agree with you! In episode 3, Padma repeats EVERYTHING Tom says while they are eating the contestants dishes at the Elks club... this annoys me to NO END!

Phillip wrote:

Padma, this is coming from a gay man and may not mean that much, but I think you are the most elegant woman on tv! You are definately an asset to the show and it would not be the same without you. As for previous posters who say that your knowledge of food is limited, I'm wondering if they know you have written 2 cookbooks! Wishing you the best!

crankyadmin wrote:

I have to be honest - I was not a huge Padma fan in the beginning. But, as on all these Bravo shows, there has to be a "Vanna White". However, I am now sold on her. I think she has some interesting food insights - and the little air time we get to see her tasting, we see that she is very enthusiastic about the food and is constructively critical. If a well selling cook book and some Food Network appearances make you qualified to be a judge - then she is certainly as qualified as Ted Allen is. Have any of you watched his food work on Queer Eye - he is BEYOND unqualified in the kitchen. However - like Padma, I think he has something interesting to offer (and is an entertainingly good writer judging by his blog) as foil to Tom, Gail and the guest judges.

Further - airing and commenting on her personal circumstances in this arena is beyond pale. I love this show as much as the next foodie - but some of you need to get a life and some friends and stop taking this so personally and seriously.

Padma,

Please don't pay any attention to the negative commenters. You've been one big reason why I love this show. You're always fair, dignified, and courteous, even at your steeliest, and when the contestants do well it shows that you are happy for them. There have been two marital breakups in my family and it's a very hard time. I admire your husband in his own way, for his talent and grace under pressure; but it was a long time before I knew of the connection, and I thought you were awesome already. The story of your escape from death as a very young woman and your pride in your unique beauty are very inspiring, as is your knowledge of food. Hang in there and remember some people will watch you anywhere.

I love the way Hung trys to "correct" judge's "misunderstanding" of his food. Last week, he announced that a critical judge didn't understand his concept. This week, I burst out laughing as he "called out" a judge who didn't understand his infallible sweetness and cream theory. Well, I think what he was saying is that your drink didn't mix well with your sour cream mess, and I think a mixologist would know. Hung, lose the arrogance and you might grow a little as a cook. He does crack me up though. Good luck with your personal changes, Padma. Come back soon.

I think anyone who doesn't want to see her on the show is either jealous or a very boring person.

As Greg C just wrote, I rewatched some Season 1 episodes and it's hard to stomach that hostess. You're talented, insightful, and add substance to the show. We miss your blog but certainly understand the need to step back. Take care of yourself and know that you have a lot of support and supporters.

I want to offer you my perspective as a viewer. It really does seem that you are Tom's echo. I think Bravo could really help out this perception quite a bit by giving you just a little help. If you could be the first one to comment on the dishes you would certainly not be parroting anyone. They should give you equal opportunities to 'go first'. I guess I am like everyone else though, who thinks I could improve a lot about the show!

Yes, Padma is a beautiful woman. Yes, she is going through a hard time right now. But between this, Tom taking time off from his blog and the general lack of cohesiveness this season makes me feel that there really is just no oomph left in the Top Chef engines.

No one looks like they're enjoying themselves at all. Judges tables feel like a painful chore, contestants seemed lost trying to put together random feedback. It is understandable that life gets in the way, and that we all must take time to rest, relax, catch up etc...but for those of us out here in the real world and not i TV land - shows like Top Chef provide us the opportunity to relax and enjoy. If you continue in this manner I think it may be time to look elsewhere for our entertainment.

though i think you are a nice person, from what i've seen, i dont believe you are a vital part of the show. previous bloggers wrote that you just state the obvious and i agree. yes you are a pretty woman but that has nothing to do with the food. i do hope you are alright but i also hope you will persue a different career. good health!

Hi Padma, I had never noticed your scar until this year. I was so sorry thinking that you had recently had an accident before the show had restarted. I am glad you are well and not recovering from a recent accident. I hope others feel as I do, that a scar is nothing to be ashamed about. It makes me feel sad and sorry for you in the way that you had to go through the original trauma to begin with. That you are beautiful and lucky to have the looks you do have with a beautiful body, smile, hair, etc. I think if anyone has felt anything, it's just shock that you have had to deal with the truama to begin with, and that you are now bravely facing new fashion chances.

I just want to say that I think Padma is awesome on Top Chef. I hope that she is doing well and that things in her personal life work out OK. I would like to see her in a major movie. She would make a perfect Spider-Woman.

Will someone please get Padma a tube of "Mederma". I had a really nasty scar on my arm from surgery (like she has) and after using it it's barely noticable!!

Hello Padma, I just want to say that what you did to tre last night was harsh. How could the judges let cj get away with playing dirty. I have been watching top chef from the beginning and I have to say that your judgement last night made me take a good look at what this show is really about. Eliminating tre was wrong. Why not Brian, cj, or even that pain in the ass hong. I hope your judgement was not based on personal feelings beacause it makes no sense to me at all. Maybe you should stick to getting dressed up and eating and leave the judgement table for the real judges.

I really like the show, I watch every week. I do have some comments about the show, first , I thought Howie was the person should be going not Sara N. Beside ,it was not fair for the chefs during the guilty pleasures episode.I thought the chefs were not treated right, because they all beleived that they have a night off

Padma,
I think you're great, regardless of some comments I have read here, I think you're a perfect role model for young women everywhere! you come across as being confident ,opinionated(in a good way), very knowledgeable about food, and you seem to be the only one that CAN be straight forward and deliver the bad news to the challenge losers and you do it gracefully, not in a cold, arrogont or demeaning manner .I really hope you return soon best wishes. and if Bravo executives are reading this You really should'nt let Pamda go you will lose major ratings...

Padma,
My daughter's Rachel and Julie and I are from Hawaii. We watch your show often and admire you so very much. We know you are going through a very hard time now and we wanted to let you know that it will get better! We've been through so much in that arena and understand the pain is bigger than you now, but soon you will be bigger than the pain. Love you!

Me Ke Aloha Pumehana!

Hi Padma,

My wife loves the clothes you choose to wear on the shows. Is there a list of the designers and where to buy somewhere? Thank you.

  1. Keep it clean. You're a Bravo fan, you know better words than most TV audiences.
  2. Avoid using ALL CAPS! (It’s like screaming...)
  3. We don't post e-mail addresses or phone numbers.
  4. Have a good time. We love that you love the blogs.
