Very nicely done Padma! I was never a big fan of yours but you really impressed me this episode. Your voice wasn't droning, you smiled often and you had a playful, twinkle in your eyes! (instead of the usual blank, vacuous stare).
Keep it up! Bravo!

SO i thought the breakfast quickfire was great and unexpected. What i dont understand is during the elimination challenge, why they invited that guest judge back to the show. In every single show he has been on he is mean and critizing of everyone else except himself. (he has made some bad food himself). I just dont get it with him, he took the joy out of watching this episode. Luckily Padma always tries to brighten it by saying both good and bad things an offers constructive criticism.

Lastly, I just want to state my outrage over CJ being sent home.
I'm seriously hoping that something major was cutout of the judges table, because from what I saw, there was a clearer option that CJ.
Since when is it acceptable to keep a chef around who's WHOLE dish stunk? Why send the chef home when the main protein was ok, and just the side dish was the culprit? I really don't care if it was "the worst dish in 3 years" of Top Chef, at least half of his meal was edible.

YAY, Padma. Perhaps it is my imagination but Padma seemed like a nicer person tonight. I even saw what looked like a little exasperation when Tom went on his rant. I got the distinct impression that you enjoyed what you were doing, liked the chefs and wanted the best for them, and recognized that Tom's behavior was embarrassing. well done.

I mean, you hardly blogged this year Padma. Maybe you don't want to because you're getting lots of negative content this year. I don't think the screeners allowed my comments on your blog last week. I don't know why. I'm always respectful, even if I write negative comments. It seems the screeners are protecting you Padma. Why are they protecting your feelings Padma, when you can get pretty nasty to the contestants yourself!!!!

Padma's opinion doesn't count anything. Did you notice how she claimed the salmon was delicious and how she thought it was a horrible idea to serve cawliflower on an airplane? According to Tom and Tony the salmon was inedible but the cawliflower was a brilliant idea. Get rid of Padma already! She's completely useless and annoying.

I love top chef but I have been monumentally dissapointed with the use of Monk Fish, Chilean Sea Bass, Sea Scallops, and possible farm raised salmon. I believe very strongly that as a popular TV personality and international figure, who has had a positive influence on ethical and moral issues (womens rights), you could serve the worlds oceans by commiting to responsible use of marine resources. There was an effort by NYC chefs to not use Sword Fish until the stocks returned to a renewable level some years back. In future season please reinforce these issues. I would like to send you documented information regarding the Marine Stewardship.

It is really difficult to figure out judging. Due to creative editing, I get confused between how the guests feel about the food and how the judges feel.
Obviously, the chefs want everyone to like their dish, but there were people on the plane commenting how much they liked Sara's salmon and then Tom and Anthony said it was terrible.
IMHO - I love Dale's personality! He is creative in the kitchen and has a wickedly fun sense of humor that is so enjoyable. He's the real deal. I hope I get to taste his food if I'm ever in Chicago. Keep going strong, Dale. I think you'll take it all!!!

I think these video blogs were a very good idea. You get to kick back and be yourself and talk about the show and about food. Your role as hostess of the show and the way the show is edited can lead the viewer to misunderstand the depth of knowledge and passion about food that you really have. It's nice to see the "real" Padma.
Watching you taste and judge, your palate seems to definately leans more toward the "light" and "health food" side of things. While this is great for everyday eating and keeping fit and healthy, it occsionally seems a little off for a competition that is essentially about producing the most delicious and exciting food possible, usually meant for special and memorable ocassions and not counting calories. Then again if your palate lends itself toward lightness, it's just your palate.
You have a tough doble role, it seems: you must play the glamorous hostess on one side, and yet come across as a fully competent judge and foodie. And they were awfully harsh on your predecessor Kate Lee. Word of advice: err on the side of competent foodie, forget all the glamor and trying to be the perfect hostess with the perfect poise. You already got the beauty in spades, and ultimately the fans are looking for depth to go along with it. Then again the producers of this show seem to have a LOT of power, and while the fans love you judges, it seems that the producers are constantly forcing you into roles and actions that can stray from the honest approach to food that the whole show is based on. It's time for the hosts and judges to form a union! You are a big reason why the fans tune in.
By the way, wha's this rumor going around about you and Sam?

For those who wonder: Tony Bourdain has been kept on the show for the same reason he's got his own TV show, which for that matter is the same reason anything gets done in the television industry. Because someone--someone being a lot of viewers--thinks he's good TV. He gets the ratings, he stays on the show. Don't like it? Don't watch when you know he's going to be on, don't visit his blog, don't have anything to do with his involvement in the show. Vote with your eyes.
That said, personally I kind of like him, in a strange kind of way. Most of the time.

Love the show but have a problem with guest chefs like Bourdain. How can anyone trust the pallette of someone who chain smokes more than a chimney? It is well documented that even casual smoking diminishes the ability of the taste buds to do their duty but a chain smoker has no idea what anything really tastes like. Great challenges and so far the chefs are doing a commendable job. Being a Texan of course I am hoping Casey wins.

I thought both challenges from last night were creative and fun. You always wonder which chefs are going to concoct what -- I know Bourdain has his share of naysayers out there, and I'm not going to say he was the "nicest" of guest judges, but hello?!?! That's not why he's there! You had a clear balance of reactions to everything last night; and his comment about the broccolini being "something out of Bob Marley's closet," while it may have been too blunt for some, made Colicchio giggle like a schoolboy! Classic and well put -- by the way, who else was waiting for someone to trip and fall over that truffle oil last night? One of these days, the remaining four will go OFF on Hung and his reckless abandonment in the kitchen...and kudos to CJ for going out gracefully and humbly -- a true class act.

To Mark (Sept 13) Kudos and ditto on your comments. I have blogged MANY times about Padma's inability to create her own ideas/critiques/commentary. Your blog contained yet another example :if I remember correctly, the reason Padma said that cauliflower was not a good choice was because someone else (was it her traveling companion?) said so ( flatulance-inducing). She does not and cannot have an original thought in her brain!
To Swordofqueens (Sept 13)- again, I have blogged MANY times to defend those of us in viewer-land who dislike Padma as the host (and there are quite a few!). We are NOT jealous "green eyed monsters", nor are we clueless morons that don't know about her so-called qualifications. We don't like Padma as a host because she is inarticulate, wooden and does not provide valuable commentary. Period. If she were charasmatic, insightful AND beautiful, more power to her !! Reading several blogs here, I'm really surprised that there's so much hate towards Padma. Her job is to introduce the challenges and provide her own opinion on the dishes. That's what she does, so why are her opinions not considered legit? I don't think she was using this episode to selfishly promote her book. In almost every episode, there's a chef giving away his/her book or dropping the name of the restaurant. Big deal.
Also, I don't hate CJ or anything but, honestly, it was his time to go. His food isn't consistently great and, in this episode, it was considered the worst of the bunch. This is not a popularity contest. It's a cooking contest. As for comments about Casey, I wasn't particularly impressed with her cooking before, but she's been stepping it up--enough that I don't think we should be condescending and think that her wins are by pure luck. She's getting quite consistently at delivering good food. How is it that Dale, who hasn't really been highlighted that much, has suddenly become the golden boy while Casey, who has actually won several quickfire and elimination challenges, has been looked at with such suspicion?

Hi Padma,
Actually, this has less to do with the blog than with some of the below comments...
To Andy - It is perfectly understandable for someone to take time off from blogging while coping with a divorce.
To Mark - It seemed that Chef Colicchio and Bourdain were judging solely on taste, while Padma was sitting with the airline expert. Cauliflower is a "gassy" food, like brussel sprouts and brocolli, which is why they talked about staying away from it on an airplane (the comment was "easy on the tummy") rather than anything to do with taste. Getting an upset stomach on an 8 hour flight is no fun at all! Obviously the taste won out over the concern over gastric distress, however.

I like season 3 because you really don't know who is going to win. It seems like everyone holds back until the final 5, then we really get to see who has talent. I have to admit that I'm not a fan of the group challenges. I don't think it has a place in a competition setting when each person is trying to showcase their individual talents and can get eliminated because of others in a group. Love the show and congrats on the Emmy!

I'm a Padma fan. Why can't a beautiful, fit woman enjoy food as well? Unlike the previous host (Katie Joel) Padma actually puts food in her mouth, savors it, and is able to comment intelligently on it. I never saw Katie eat one darn thing, only complain about the bloodline in her fish during the finale. I also love the chemistry between her, Gail and Tom. They seem to represent very divergent palates and that's important when evaluating taste and chefs.
Speaking of palates -- what was with CJs? He combined the oddest combinations of ingredients. And his list of odd ingredients always seemed endless.

On the contestants:
This season's contestants have better average qualifications, but none have sparks of genius - except for Hung, who lacks in personal maturity.
Tre, Casey, CJ, Howie - who cares. None of them will rise to the top of the industry. Neither have previous contestants or winners (the food at Perilla ranges from good to sub-standard, the wines are ill-chosen, and some desserts dangerously bad).
The interesting parts of the show to me are:
1. how a highly intelligent and driven Indian immigrant can use social dynamics, rhetoric and poise to exude the overdose of grace Americans call "hot", and convert the generated attraction into professional success.
2. why food has become the most recent pop-cultural phenomenon. Maybe because it's one of the last things we associate with love, time and other traditional values, before we either resurrect or erode it on TV. Maybe because it combines art and science in unprecedent ways. Maybe because we need to eat even more than we need company or to have sex.
Good luck Padma, and may you age with equal grace.

Padma,
Keep up the good work. you give the show some much needed grace and style. I'm sure the contestants are comforted that at least one of the judges has some respect for their talent and experience. Obviously, they are not children and most have expensive training and excellent practical experience and professional mentoring.
After having worked in the restaurant industry for over 20 years, I can tell you that is a difficult business in which have a career. Years ago, my very experienced mentor told me to "always remember the restaurant business is a "pennies business"--sometimes you make dollars, but mostly you make pennies. One must find their satisfaction in meeting wonderful people (both staff and guest,) providing gracious service, and giving the guest a delicious meal and a fabulous dining experience." (all of this while trying to juggle high overhead costs, daily fluctuating food costs, competition, staffing issues, etc.)
Having an excellent chef who understands he is part of the 'greater' picture is certainly a good foundation for any fine restaurant.Your show gives the average person an inside look at the restaurant business with all its joys (great food, happy guests, camaraderie among the staff)and all its 'warts' (tempers, personality clashes, arrogant and abusive chefs, dishes that are not always perfect, etc.) Hopefully Top Chef is also inspiring young people or anyone who is looking for a career change to enter the industry. May it also inspire a more 'team based' concept of restaurant operation.

This year I was able to attend the Aspen Food and Wine VIP party with all the chefs on the front of Food & Wine July issue. There was some crazy food there such as Bone Marrow and carmelized onion grilled sandwich or Marinated Octopus with chickpea.
My question is, who the hell is Padma and why does she feel entitled to be so scathing and borderline rude? She is my least favorite part of the show. The airline food episode was the first glimpse of a personality and a smile.

WOW! Never seen so much hate mail. That Sucks! And a waste of enery. Anyway I have to say that wasn't the first time (it's probably the 3rd time) I've seen Padma look a little upset to send someone packing. She just seems to enjoy all the chefs or is used to them (sorry don't know how to say it). I think she likes all of them frankly. I don't think it was anything too personal. I think some of you were reading too much into it. But CJ definitely has a crush on Padma (so much so it's sickening, come on now, she shines brighter than the sun?) but then again so do I, and I sure many others too (who don't seem to be here at the moment). Hung seemed taken over as well in the episode and Padma looked kinda taken by him. But that might have been the camera angle, the light might have been in her eyes, or having to shoot again or the 6 A.M part, who knows. Anyway I have to say I love the show but I do think some take it to seriously. Don't get too into T.V. especially reality T.V., because you see, there this thing called editing where they can make things seem like something totally different. For instance Padma might have made that sad look during deliberation or she might have been checking the time. And she never really looked at him a certain way before that. I'm just saying don't read too much into any of it, and don't take it too seriously. It's not like you can taste the food through the T.V. or anything. Some of you seem to be slamming the judges for supposedly judging by personality or one bad dish or whatever, but frankly, if they are, alot of you are doing the same exact thing.

I would think that people would realize that being critical of the chefs is what the show is about. If the judges patronized them, the show would tank. They signed up for it, they should be able to take it. As far as Padma goes, I think she does a great job and adds much style and content to the show...yeah, it is true I'm crush'n on her a bit though.

Hi Padma!
I am not too upset about CJ going home, I knew he'd be gone sooner or later. I think it's going to be between Casey and Hung. I really don't like Casey's personality though, she appears to be so stuck up and up tight....ugh. I like Hung but he is a bit immature. I don't like Brian, at all, I think he gets way too nervous and makes a mess of things. Sara seems like the underdog to me, I think she can cook perhaps even better than the others there however she seems to be a bit of a slacker and way too laid back, I think she will probably be going home soon.
Well, just my thoughts on the show....which by the way, I just LOVE!

In the quickfire...why did the le Cirque owner like the flavor of Casey's dish best but this got a negative reaction from you Padma? and then all of a sudden he chose Hung as the winner? this seemed like an influenced decision---please, what do you have against Ms. Casey?? And why Padma are you so dismall and grumpy as a host/spokesmodel? I'd love to see a different, more deserving hostess on this show.

My heart is broken! I just *knew* that Dale & Sara would be in the finals togethre. I am so disappointed but it was a fair decision, I suppose. I'd really like to see Hung bbrought down a peg or two though. He is under the delusionall thinking that he is so above everyone else. I got news for him... He's not! Good luck to Sara, one of my first favorites! And, Dale, get ready for next week and go balls out again big guy!

I think that the most talented chefs are Kaycee and Hung..I have a strong feeling that these two will be the final two left standing....I predict that Dale will go out next, then Brian, then Kaycee, and then Hung will be crowned the TOP CHEF!!!!!
Can I just say I love the style of the Bravo Network, especially as it pertains to Top Chef..Truthfully, I think that all those other shows that are aired on Bravo are Top Chef wannabees....Without the flawlessness..and they are not nearly as interesting...I don't even watch them...But it would take alot to keep me away from my Top Chef..I'm always talking good about the show to everyone I know...Alot of people I talk to dont watch it or have heard of it but dont watch.....But I do have this one friend who is a young and upcoming chef and he is just as into it as I am...and although we have never met or had sex yet, him and I do chat online and go over the show play by play....its refreshing to find someone as much of a top chef geek as I am proud to be...
BRAVO PLEASE keep the top Chef coming for many many happy seasons to come...
Boy when TOP CHEF comes on, I crank my home theatre system WAY up and that is the best way to experience top chef, in full dolby surround sound...TRUST ME!!!!
I love how Bravo is such a gay friendly network...and its kind of funny how midway through the competition and not a moment before, how Hung kinda slipped and made a comment about how he goes both ways..but he only let that slip once...But Dale suddenly mid-competition started letting it slip al over the place that he is gay....good going Dale..Im sure the Bravo producers had absolutely nothing to do with that LOL....
But, alas, dale, my poor gay brother, if my prediction is correct, and I believe it is, then you are going home next week!!!! let the real chefs like Kaycee and Hung have the floor.....buh bye Dale!!

Hi,
We would like to know what makes Padma such an expert on food and food tasting/flavors etc...? Wasn't she an actress? We saw her on an episode of Star Trek:Enterprise a few weeks ago where she played some kind of alien princess and may we say her acting left a lot to be desired and honestly, was pretty horrible ! There are certain people on tv today who make it their job to judge others and most of em' have no business doing so !! We also think Padma needs to tone it down ! It's a cooking show not a beauty pagaent. We can't figure out why great shows like Top Chef feel the need to add T & A !! The show would have the same success without it !
Thank You,
Kimberly & Carla

As the host of the show, I thought to tell you of my disappointment to watch the first show from Chicago and to view all of the contestants walking out of Whole Foods carrying disposable plastic bags -- the same ones that the company is going to stop using due to the effect on the environment. Can't the show start becoming a bit more environmentally conscious? How about giving the contestants reusable bags that they are responsible for during the shows taping?
