Padma,
You guys sold out! Your decision was probably right for the contest last night, but the fact is that Hung should have been eliminated a long time ago. I was afraid that you guys would come to this conclusion and it was the wrong one, for several weeks.
But, you looked marvelous!

Congratulations, Hung!!!

I was elated to see him win, the finale episode was amazing. Without doubt, Hung was best chef among the contestants. Casey was definitely close in terms of skills and I am sad that she panicked a little and the last episode didn't go as well for her. I am sure she will go on cooking amazing meals and be recognized as the great chef she is. I am not entirely sure what Dale was doing at the finale. Although he pulled himself together at the end of the season, I don't feel like he was on the same level as Hung or Casey. I am happy that the show did not choose the contestant that was a crowd pleaser, but the one that truly deserved the title with quality work and consistency.

You go, Hung! Great job, you deserve it!

I am glad HUNg won- clearly- he has the skills of a classic chef- this is not a personality contest!!! People did not like Hung because he was "selfish" & about the competition- but so were the others especially Brian & CJ when they sold Tre" out & took the less "responsibility oriented roles-
I liked Cassie- she was cute but,
Cassie couldn't even cut up an onion- remember that challenge-

The judges didn't sell out. the top chef did win!!! yeah, Hung has a huge ego, but it works for him and he was the best. His style is different and at times he was annoying because of his ego, but it comes down to the food, and he was the best!!! congrats!!!

Padma, talk to your producers and try to fix your show. I had a feeling this was the direction this would go and not because Hung was a better chef. This is just what Top Chef does. It ignores true talent and honors the weak. Hung has no respect for anyone but himself. A top chef is someone that shows true talent and leadership week after week and listens to constructive critisism. Not someone that cooks 1 or 2 good meals and snubs the judges, viewers and other chefs while he's at it. Im done!!! Top chef just lost a very very loyal viewer. Good luck Dale and Casey. You are both top chef's and true class acts in my book.

I think a lot of people are mistaking this competition for a POPULARITY CONTEST. This is not a competition to judge who is more friendly, or who is a better "team player". This is a competition to determine who is the best CHEF. Whether or not Hung was likable, he was clearly the most talented and most consistent chef on the show. It really made me mad how even the other contestants whined about Hung not being a "team player". ITS NOT A TEAM COMPETITION!!

As far as his management skills, that is something that can be learned and besides, this is a COOKING competition. His COOKING talent is natural, and far exceeded the other chefs.

Hung was great, ego or not. The best chef won... hands down.

You say this after every controversial decision.

Hung was the best, but not the nicest. And the show will go on.

CK wrote:

Outside of who won, I wanted to watch the show, not folks confined and seated, clapping on demand (live), and not a spokeswoman, speaking slowly. Too slowly.

We kept saying, ohmygawd, this is horrible. "Yeah, where are the cooks?"

Nothing really has more drama on the show than what is happening in the kitchen. Nothing is as educational, as what is happening in the kitchen. Nothing is more fun than what is happening in the kitchen, and who doesn't relate to the chef who is succeeding and the ones stumbling, or having a last minute crisis? What do you mean no cream cheese?

Please limit the model's face time. I am sure she's a nice person, but her face time, lack of genuine emotion, and speaking so slow, slows the pace. If she was encouraged to be more herself her face time might be interesting.

As for Hung, he loves challenge. He can run an orchestra against the odds; he'd probably love it. What is wrong with that? He can see how to do something, make it happen. I would never say to him, "Calm down, Hung." There is value to his speed and efficiency.

SandyD wrote:

They should have it set so that the judges do not know who cooked what dish to honestly judge the dishes without putting the particular cook into it and this would do away with personalities and just judge on the meals or challenge at any given time. There is no way that one is not going to favor one cook or another and that has to affect their decision on who cooked the best of the meals.
Love the show no matter who wins and good luck to all of the guys and gals that took part in it this season and looking forward to the next one. Sandy

Congrats to Hung and it was the right choice. This is Top CHEF, like Tom has stated many times in the past. It's not Top Sous Chef or Top Sommelier and so its also not Fan Favorite Chef. I still find it hilarious the viewers that think they know who the Top Chef is without tasting a single dish from any of the chefs. I think this also works against Hung in terms of the viewers, cuz Hung is so technically proficient, and his dishes seem so simple. But the reality is, his dishes are extremely complex and uses a lot of ingredients, but are presented in a sophisticated yet simple manner. A sign of a chef that shows a mastery over his dishes. Great season and looking forward to the next season! (Btw, when are you, Tom and Gail gonna throw on the aprons and show us your skills!? Perhaps as sous chefs in a finale? Or a smackdown against former TC contestants? =) )

Thank you for voting for discrimination. I am sure Hung's restuarant will cater to only those he deems worthy. We all know the average person or anyone else he sterotypes wont be served or worse, will get the stuff he dropped on the floor first.

I have to say that I was not a fan of Hung's but he did seem to take alot of pride in what he was cooking. I thought Casey always wanted to blame someone or something for her lack of execution. And I do remember the episode with the onion chopping contest. Casey lost that comepetition for her team that day.
I hope that the next season is even better, I know I will be watching. Padma, keep letting your personality shine ! It showed this time around and it was awesome !

The right person won! Congrats Hung! I feel that in order to be a top chef your food has to be flawless at all times and Hung's food has been the most consistent and great during the show compared to the other two. He seems to have direction with his cooking and that should be recognized, the other two seem to just always pull things out of their butt and have no clue what they are doing sometimes. While Casey and Dale had some good dishes, they also had quite a few dishes that SUCKED! Therefore, it is only right that Hung won. Besides, he looked like he is the only one wants the title and is trying so hard to get it, so I'm glad he got it. I think the judges made the right and FAIR decision. Congrats again Hung, you make Vietmanese people proud with that winning DuCk dish! And one last thing-Boi, get some sleep! ......Hyattsville, Maryland

It is a competition, so why in the freaking world would he give away a cooking decision to his competition? It showed the other Chefs to be immature and clueless. He was the best technically, as I did not taste his food, and by what I saw he was Top Chef.Congrats Hung, and the rest can eat your Monkey!!! Do you really own a Monkey?? Maybe you could of cooked your Monkey's brains for Tony.B.

I can only say that I am so upset at this whole season! What happened in Manhatten? First they said that Caseys dish was the best then it went to Hung? TV editing i guess. Did you even think about addressing all the things that Hung did to everyone in the kitchen? Spilling food on the floor and not picking up after himself, spilling oil and denying it on camera and almost cutting Casey with his knife. And this is who you crown as your top chef? From what I saw, Dale gave you the best top chef you could have asked for. He came from the bottom and rose to the top. Not stopping! He has a heart and soul and loves to share it with the world! You should have rewarded him for it!

Padma,

While I too believe that Casey was the better overall Chef I have to say it was her contest to win or lose and she didn't come through when it counted most. In reading the previous blogs I can't believe people want the Top Chef title given to the fan favorite. It's TOP CHEF people, not TOP FAN FAVORITE. We have to realize that we are not there seeing everything that goes on nor can we taste the dishes ourselves. While Hung was not my favorite I do believe in giving credit where it is due so, congratulations Hung. And Padma, under the circumstances, the judges did the right thing.

Anything goes in reality show competitions, which i think is its own beauty, and some people are ignorant to know that. Good Job Judges and great job HUNG!!!!

Hey Padma,

Have you considered giving Top Chef 4 an international theme. I think this concept is unique and outside the box- much like the French restaurant challenge episode except it doesn't necessarily have to be about replicaton.

Throw in challenges representing the most popular cuisines in the world.

French, Mexican, Chinese, Spanish, Indian, Japanese, German, Thai etc..

Food for thought....

Stereotype much? I don't suppose it could be possible that people disliked Hung because of his own words and actions and because of the Villain edit that Bravo gave him; no, it must be because the prejudiced Americans don't like immigrants. I'm sure your attitude is serving you well in your profession.

That said, I didn't really care who won (although I was expecting Hung to win) but I felt bad for Casey having to chin up in front of that audience knowing she had no chance to win. The producers should have taken that into consideration and thought of a way to handle it without publicly humiliating her. I hope that sort of thing is handled better next season if a live finale is considered again.

padma- a great season and I for one enjoy you very much. I wholly agree that Hung won fairly as the best technical chef which was commented on several times. It should not be a personality contest at all. Casey is charming and obviously terrribly talented ,I think she just got a little flustered and made some off decisions , I adored Dale and his rediscovery of his passion and talent as a chef . Very nice to see. Chef Tom is an excellent judge and I feel he's painstakingly fair in his assesments. Congratulations on another great season.

if you need help, ask! it was also weak of dale to ask advice

First, CONGRATULATIONS TO HUNG! Hung was always professional. Was he warm and fuzzy? No! He was in a competition like everyone else! During the challenge to replicate the Le Cirque recipe I was stunned that any of the other contestants would have the balls to ask him about what he did. The whole point of the challenge was to see if each individual chef could replicate it ON THEIR OWN. I think if you look back at Hung's reaction, he was genuinely stunned and taken aback by this request, as was I. Sure, the next job interview you're on, when you walk out and the next interviewee asks what he should say to get the job, are you going to help them out? Would Tiger Woods help out any of his fellow golfers as to course conditions? I think not. I think Hung has lived his life cooking and I think he comes from a very strong work ethic were you don't spin, you do. All this said, I truly believe that if Dale hadn't had a dish that Tom described as "inedible" he would have won. I am glad Dale did get that 3 star rave, as a fellow Chicagoan and half Lithuanian and would happily eat anything he cooked.

To all you people who think it was rigged if you dont want to watch the show anymore that fine with everyone else. I have faith in the judge's decisions, which they often spend hours analyzing who should pack their knives. It's their job and I think You guys have done a great job.

Each of the finalists have been at the very bottom and top of the competition. It really is a matter of luck and using the strategy of not having the worse dish. you can make a bad dish but as long as you dont have the worst you will move on to the next round. ex. Tre and lia were expected to go to the finals, but challenges got them.

Some people cant get past the fact why hung won. Please rewatch the final finale episode. The final challenge is mainly about consistentcy. Who cooked the most dishes with less faults? Think about how Food Raters would act if they went in a resturant and tasted all the courses and 2 dishes came out bad.

It's okay to have your own opinion , but to bash the judges because you didnt agree with them ( and you didnt taste any of the food), and say the show is fake makes you look like a cry babies. ps. i cant spell :p

What a great season this was! I loved Season 2 and never thought anything would be as good as how that season ended, even though I didn't agree with Season 2's winner. However, I totally agreed Hung should have won season 3. Hung always seemed like a better chef compared to the others. I liked many of the character's on Season 3: The final 3 on the finale were definitely the ones who should have been there. Casey and Dale were both great, but I didn't like how Casey was so down on herself at the end there. Also, I'm glad to hear how Dale picked himself back up after the personal problems in his life, it's almost too bad they all couldn't have won. I really look forward to Season 4. Anybody who complains about the winner, I believe, is basing the winnings too much on personality. I believe Hung can be a team player, and as he said it the last episode when dealing with Brian and how Brian was cutting it real close on the challenge, if it was his kitchen he would have helped him for sure, but it was a competition, nobody else was helping anybody in that last episode. Judges were great, guest chefs were great, tell Tom to not be so critical though!! Great Show!!

Don't the judges know anything about their chefs? Their backgrounds, their goals, etc. ? Abit confusing and surprising to me. Also, let's be alittle bit more verbal to the chefs about the challenges, the food, etc. I don't hear enough from you except "And your time starts..........NOW - good luck!" FOOD FOR THOUGHT: I have now watched Top Chef for two seasons. The one thing that stands-out is the fact that the Judges are quick to chastise the Chef who does not play well with the other Chefs. So, my question to the judges is about Hung's interesting behavior and his arrogance... Why was he selected to be Top Chef when he demonstrated time and time again that he was not a team player? Hung reminds me of last seasons Chef Marcel - who could not play well with the other Chefs, and Marcel was not dubbed the Top Chef. Are the rules changing? The TOP CHEF should be the individual who excels in all aspects of culinary art, which include, but are not limited to technical, leadership, team player, and can work "outside of the box" in terms of creativity. What are the producers of Top Chef promoting?

I have to wonder why it is that the fans could see what the judges couldn't. Certainly, we fans could not taste Hung's final dish but he was never a "team player", he bad-mouthed his fellow competitors and had an overall superior attitude that only continued to augment itself over the course of his stay on Top Chef. All of the things he was critiqued on - he never even tried to improve upon but commented that he still knew more than the judges and that they were just not "seeing him". Tom even said that the judges couldn't see him in food - so why is it that Casey's passion was ignored and Dale's learning more with every episode was likewise ignored? It certainly do feel as if thi season of Top Chef was, if not "fixed", certainly biased unfairly toward Hung. Certainly a disappointment from the moment the judges said that Dale had the favorite dish of the Challenge, thus getting our hopes up that someone truly talented might actually win - to the moment those hope were dashed and Hung was announced as winner.

Padma, I wish they would quit Picking on you about CEEJAY. Any woman on the Top Chef 3 including the dishwasher, has more class than Him.

Hung, great kitchen skills, but to run a good place a few personality skills may be in order. After all you can"t afford to have a CEEJAY, JOEY,STEPHANIE, and ILLAN HALL make up your place. Although Illan may be a good dishwasher. You Won the Season with your ultimate skills. Just ease up a little. I am sure it was hard living with beautiful women, a few cool cats, and some cool jerks. That could drive anyone nut.

I really love this show!!! The show has inspired me to seriously look at culinary arts school. Everyone on the show seems so compassionate about their food! The only time I ever questioned the validity of one challenge was the episode when Dale won the quick fire challenge with Govind being the guest judge. I found it very odd that they would have an "intimate" dinner for two. You all know what I mean, too. Don't get me wrong, I really think Dale is a very talented chef, but, I felt I saw through that episode as if it were "set-up." Keep up the great work with this fantastic show. I can't wait for next season!

For those who think niceness and respect are important qualities in becoming successful, well, either you're really young or don't know many successful people. Don't get me wrong, nice guys don't always finish last, but arrogant, self-righteous jerks often finish first. Hung is an arrogant jerk. But that doesn't mean he isn't the best. This is about food and he had the best food.

And I guess that those peopell who claim that the show is sold out, probably cannot to watch the show again, even the re=run as well....after all, it's a good show....but also a good lesson to me. Not because Hung is my favorite, but also I did see through some real life.

Just watched the reunion show....and guess what, I start to love Howie as well. Everyone have one story behind, and is worthy to be respected.

I also think this season, all of the casts are great, real, and talented, comparing to the previous two seasons, they are better in skill. That's why it make this season so great! A lot of great dishes come out in this season. And great comments, allof the judges did a great job as well.

Hurray for Hung! They say Hung has a huge ego - but look at the others! Dale now whines about oh, as a chef you have to help the person next to you? It was a competition. He asks Hung for help on how to cook something - DUH! Dale's just trying to help himself! He wants Hung to help if someone doesn't manage his time right - wah, wah, then who's the true top chef? I thought Casey was a complete bore - I didn't like her from the beginning - can't believe she was a favorite and Lia was the one I liked the least. They act like know-it-alls but they are not as good as they think they are - especially Lia. I always liked Howie - I could see right through him. I thought C.J. was a dork and was jealous of Hung as a lot of them were.

I love Top Chef and wish it was on more often. Did not like the live finale though.

Season three was sooo good. I caught episodes of season one and two but I never liked top chef until season three. I'm glad Hung won, Top Chef the show would have lost all credability if he didn't.
People want to complain that Hung has a bad personality and is not capable of being (their definition) top chef. What did Sara say in the last episode... something like he's talented, passionate, and a pleasure to work with. Quit saying he wouldn't be able to run a kitchen. That other cooking show where they got that famous chef is throwing the Fbomb everywhere, and he's a world renouned chef.
Then people want to say Hung didn't take risks, his food may have tasted good but a "top chef" takes risks. How about a top chef's food should tastes good? (point for Hung, no point Dale) Then about Hung's dessert, Hung said it was to show he was a good all around cook. It didn't wow the judges but it tasted great and was a great way to end the entire meal. Hung did the right thing according to DALE! In a previous elimination challange where there were 4 courses (just like the finale) Dale said anyone with his level of experience knows that there should be a desert. So why didn't he make a dessert in the finale... maybe because the dessert he made in that elimination challange completely sucked... also when he tried to redeem himself with the next piecrust quickfire his dessert he made sucked hard once again. Dales knows with 4 courses, one should be dessert, but he sucks at dessert so he didn't do it. Could it be he was playing it SAFE!? Dale was just not doing the worst all competition long, and when I thought it was finally his turn to go home he finally made a best dish. Lucky for him that challange was game, which snuck him into the finale. I could go on more about why Hung was Far superior to Dale but this is getting long.
I though KC was tight competition and that she had just a good a shot as Hung, but we all know she blew it that day so, obvious winner/no other legitimate winner... HUNG!

As a chef myself I have to agree that Hung was the best technical cook but his choice as a winner of the series is wrong.A chef is the leader, teacher, and motivator of his cooks could you imagine Hung leading a brigade as a true top chef should I think not.The show should be called most skilled cook not top chef.

ihave never watched your show prior to the marathon ending with hung being named the winner.i thought then as i do now that he was the correct choice.i thought tre would've lasted longer.padma you lovely.poets write about women like you.go girl.although food is subjective,i felt that the judges were very objective.it wasn't a popularity contest.i am now a huge fan and will be watching.keep up the good work.love you all

Congratulations to the winner. I was not happy that Hung won, since his arrogance got in the way, but I'm looking forward to the upcoming season. I really enjoyed watching this time since everyone seemed to get along and made this show enjoyable.

I was reading jem's post and thought you may like Tom Colocchio's book, "Think Like A Chef". It starts with basics.
It's available at Tom's SUPER CHEF store, or Amazon.com.
I'll certainly be ordering one for myself.
I'm not a bad cook, but I would like to be a better cook.

I just love the show. "Top Chef" should read "Top Show"! I enjoyed the personalities and styles of each contestant. The Judges were equally interesting!

What am I going to watch now? I already sent one email congratulating Hung as the winner and Casey as the Favorite. How exciting for them!

fred wrote:

It added alot to the show when you had the established chefs work alongside of the contestants as helpers, like Rocco DeSpirito did with Hung. His comments of how Hung handed the many complex ingredients in his dishes gave the viewers extra insight from an expert's point of view and showed how sophisticated and difficult the dishes these guys put out are.

And yes, to add some fun throw in cook off between Colicchio and Hung or Andre Bourdain as bonus episodes.
