Ashley on ... Roughing It and Her Style

We kind of get a feel for how you and the other kids feel about the RV in the episode, but can you elaborate on the trip?

Camping is OK, and nature is beautiful, but my idea of roughing it is a hotel that doesn't have room service or a day spa. Now I know what you all are thinking (what a priss, spoiled, lives in a bubble, etc). I am sorry! I just love long hot showers, pretty hair, and unclogged pores. I don't like to hunt or fish. I hate dirt, mosquitoes, and all other bugs. I see no purpose in sleeping on the ground or freezing your butt off in a tent. I hate bees and other things that sting. Birds scare me, so I have no enjoyment of bird-watching. I think building a tent is something boys should do. Use matches to make a fire for Christ's sake -- what is this stick rubbing and rock clicking crap? I can barely read a compass let alone track something by the position of the sun. I am NOT peeing outdoors. I hate spiders and things that crawl. I am not much for playing with the bears or mountain climbing with the ticks and snakes and whatever else hides in the mountains. I don't like being scared of dropping a crumb outside of your camper because bears will come looking for food. I am thankful for air conditioning, pilates at the gym, indoor plumbing, and a good martini bar. Call me spoiled; call me whatever it is you want. But it's just not my thing. I could maybe see going camping with a bunch of friends for two days tops. I am willing to try everything once ... and I camped all the time as a child. Stick me in a tent on the beach, and I'm sure I could adapt to that. You can take the girl out of the OC, but you can't take the OC out of the girl! It isn't because I have to have my cell phone, laptop, or a TV. That isn't true at all -- give me a book and I am just fine. It isn't a technological thing at all. I just do not like bugs. The camping scene is not my milieu! But for you ladies that love it: YOU GO GIRLS!

Ashley, I thought you kids handled the "roughing it" experience rather well, despite your constant complaining. At least you gave it a good try and you saw much of the country in the RV. You and Mackenzie in costumes??? Too freaking wild!!!

I agree with Ashley because I always like to try new things unfortunetly I dont like a lot of things. I am a very picky eater and I dont like a lot of things but I love try. That's all I have to say. Happy New Year!

Hi, I love the show and think you are gorgeous. I agree, when i was little I loved being a girl scout and camping; but even then, i didn't like sleeping in the tents.I loved the cabins. I am also crazy when it comes to my hair and skin and hate clogged pores as well. I don't think you are spoiled. People say the same thing about my sister and I. They say my dad spoils us, that we r in our early twenties and should take care of ourselves. I telled them we are not spoiled but well loved. If my dad can afford to pay our rent in our apartments, car note, cell phone bills, etc.. then let him.Like why would he do less when he can afford more. I know that I am African American and a lot of my friends had a problem when you guys were trying on the chicken and gorilla suit and McKenzie put the gorilla head on and said "i'm interracial". Now some of my friends think she was taking a jab at blacks because of old racial comments in which blacks are called monkies. I know she didn't mean that and have been trying to defend her because they are trying to write letter to bravo. I don't care, I think you guys are great and would love for you to clear up or clarify the comment not just to blacks but other ethnic group or races because it is somewhat hard to get the joke.

Jennifer wrote:

The only thing that stood out in this episode was when you and McKenzie were at the costume shop. McKenzie put on the gorilla mask and said "look, my parents are interracial."
Not only am I insulted, but my feelings are hurt. How could someone so beautiful on the outside, be so ugly on the inside.

Erika wrote:

I just watched the latest episode of the show and happened to catch the costume store scene. As a native LA girl I know some of the stereotypes that are attached to the OC and the residents. One of them being that the people that live there are sheltered and have an ignorant view of minority groups. While I am not quick to slam down the race card I would say that I was offended by a comment that MacKenzie said when trying on the gorilla head with the torso of the chicken outfit. You do not look like an interracial child when you have a gorilla head on. Perhaps this was a slip of the tongue and there wasn't any idiotic or racist intention behind the comment. On the other hand maybe there was - I hope not. I would say in the future be more careful about what you say and how it could be interpreted.

Heath T. Bpuldin wrote:

This one is spell checked.

This is for McKenzie. I think the comment you made was really inappropriate, ignorant and racist. Are all wealthy people ignorant and racist? Maybe it's just a lack of life experience but that won't assure anyone you won't be a racist, especially if you aren't being taught not to be. When you and Ashley were trying on costumes, Ashley put the gorilla head on you and you said “My Parents Were Interracial." That's fu_k*% up. How dare you. Do you even know what you implied?? So let's go on with your ignorant statement. When you made that statement, what race would you say your parents were? What mixture of gorilla and human give you interracial? NONE! I think the comment came from a deep racist being inside you and you should get that checked out before you hurt more people with those kinds of comments. I think you owe every race on the planet an apology especially African American which have been call apes and gorillas for some time now. You probably only have been doing it for12 years or so. Have you ever been called on something like this before? Have you made comments like this before? Ashley, you are older and you were too ignorant yourself to know what that comment would imply to other cultures. You lil rich white people kill me how you say your not racist but ignorant racist comments always seem to fly out of that mouth when the silver spoon is out of it. I could already figure you don't have friends of color or else you would have been sensitive to such comments. I really want to lay into you harshly but my new year’s resolution is to put to practice some Deepak Chopra stuff. I'm sure you don't know who he is so Google him. Get some knowledge and history of different cultures and cultures your race have destroyed on their way up to injustice, so you can do the things you do without a care or equality. That way you will know that comments you make can hurt another culture and coming from a person from the culture that has a past like yours should always try to do better by other cultures in every way to change your fate with the higher power. It's the least you can do. That was a Bad statement. You may not be a racist; then you should make comments that can be perceived as racist. You may not understand this because you aren't of color so I hope you ask someone to help you through this. I was offended but wanted to take a moment to let you know so you may help yourself. I would help you or anyone in any way I can if asked regarding something like this. Happy New Year.

Shame on Bravo wrote:

I was watching this episode at home last night and was shocked to hear George's racist beast of a daughter say that her parents were interracial when she had the ape suit on. I couldn't believe that the TV station would think that this was appropriate TV content. Obviously the fabulously spoiled of Orange County think that it's OK to make statements like that on TV. Money is no cure for ignorance. I won't be watching this show again. I'll be advising my friends and family to do the same. I might boycott the channel all together (I love Top Chef and Project runway so it would really hurt). Shame on you Bravo and shame on Mckenzie!

Dena wrote:

I have yet to see this episode yet, however, I can pretty much make an educated guess by stating that this was not a racial comment. Although untrue, scientist have been saying for years that we have evolved from apes. This comment was probably a take off of this opinion. A JOKE. It is also my experience that there are several cultures that have had persecution and have moved on. So quit looking for some sort of racial undertone in every joke or comment made by those of caucasian decent. Everyone needs to move on and get off there soap boxes. I know that racism is still alive today in our society, but don't look for it where it obviously is not.

David wrote:

Heath,

I thought the same thing when I watched the show, but decided I was reading way too much into what McKenzie said. I'd like to think that since McKenzie was wearing a chicken suit and a gorilla mask, she meant a gorilla/chicken marriage. Still, many of the people on this show are as dumb as rocks. They have way more money and luxury in their lives than I do, but lack education and common sense. We watch it for a laugh.

Ok let me just say first of all that I love Ashley on the show. After reading her blogs, I have looked at her in a whole different way. She really is a sweet good hearted person with a great head on her shoulders, much more than I can say for some of the other kids on the show. As far as camping goes I have never once been and never ever plan on going. I hate the outdoors. I totally agree about the bugs, that is just disgusting!!! Anyway and as far as the comment that McKenzie said, it was a freakin joke! Get over it people she is 18 and having fun. I am sure the people that are judging her have said a lot worse. My gosh, dont take stuff so seriously!

Megan wrote:

McKenzie's comment was ignorant, hurtful and extremely stupid. It really does not matter what her intent was, what matters is how it is perceived. Or am I not living in the same America that the OC is in? Hey, the people on that show are all about perception, or they would not spend so much time and money on plastic surgery. I am the mother of two beautiful, inter racial girls, and all I could think when she made that comment was, How would they have felt if they had seen that? Thankfully they are still young enough that I can protect them from the fact that there are people out there selfish enough not to take into consideration the impact of their words. But lesson to me, I better find a way to teach them fast!!! I am just glad to see that there are people out there who also were as put off as I was by this statement. McKenzie, GROW UP!!! Maybe you should go get a job or something and stop living off your Daddy's money and good graces!!!

Kristy wrote:

Re: The supposed racist comment.

Honestly, when I watched the show... the interracial comment seemed racist AT FIRST-- but then I decided to take the comment out of my personal context....

I am a Black woman...
I know that in the past (and sometimes, even now) Black people have been called all sorts of primates...

This wasn't McKenzie's context. She doesn't have the racial baggage and obviously even knowledge of the racial baggage.

It is unrealistic to expect a KID (I repeat a KID) to know the history of racial slurs.

As you grow, you learn... everyone can agree with this.

It is polite to gently correct a person.

It is shameful to label, denigrate and scream at someone in a blog comment about something they have said (unconsciously and without knowledge of The History of Racism against African Americans).

There are so many ways you can accidentally insult someone. I am sure everyone has accidentally hurt another's feelings--

It is obvious this was an accident-- and honestly-- I seriously doubt MacKenzie considers African Americans primates.

I'm brand new to the show! I love it! I have a question. I saw the show where Lauri and her family went to Yellow Stone Park in the RV. One of the girls had a puppy Yorkie. How old is it? I just got a puppy for Christmas and wanted to know what age he will really start looking like a Yorkie. I know this is probably not what this is for, just wanted to know. Still love the show and will contuine to watch. Quinn is my hero. You go gilr!!

I enjoy the show. I thought the comment about interracial between the monkey and chicken was pretty funny. Don't listen to what other people say If they can't take a joke then they should leave AMERICA- Home of the free and freespeech. You girls Rock on!

Im with you Ashley. Roughing it seems like torture, not fun.

Annie wrote:

I have to agree with David and Debra on this one...in case any of you have never seen the show before this episode, McKenzie is a very typically stupid teenage girl with a head full of hot air. She was NOT being racist, but rather trying to be cute and funny. I have had an enormous disliking for her from day one, but at the same time, I would defend any comment on calling her racist because of that scene. Who knows...maybe she is a racist, but would everyone just SHUT UP about it already!!!! She is a stupid teenager, and that's all !!!

toney wrote:

I was watching the episode on tuesday and I was shocked at
the racist comment George's daughter made. However I will not make her comment stop me from watching the show. I also think the producers are also just as ignorant as her for airing that scene. Its sad to see that even in 2008 we still have people that are still ignorant. Anyway not too surprise of the producers anything for ratings no matter who gets hurt.

Erin wrote:

Wow, you people are crazy. McK's comment was not bad at all. She had a chicken suit on and a gorilla mask on (or vice versa) meaning she's interracial btw. a gorilla and a chicken. I think you only have the right to be offended if you are a) part or whole chicken or b) part or whole gorilla. I'm guessing none of you that are "offended" are neither a) nor b). Maybe you are either c) part or whole a-hole or d) part or whole doucheb*g. But most likely a combination of c) and d). Really people, get over yourselves. It was just a playful comment and not directed at anyone bi-ratial or not. It's amazing how people can get so heated over something so trivial. Don't let them bother you McKenzie. People are sometimes just looking for a reason to get their panties in a knot.

Erin wrote:

And one other thing...I love the comments about "stop living off of Daddy's money, yadda yadda yadda". She's 18 people!!! Who else's money is she going to live off of!!! Not too many 18 year-olds, recent High School grads, I know just take off and start earning enough money to support themselves in an expensive place like SoCal. People are SO quick to judge without ever stopping to think about the person they are judging. Walk a mile in someone else's shoes for a minute before you judge. Isn't that what you are all preaching these "spoiled" kids do as well? Hypocrisy is easiest at a distance. GET OVER YOURSELVES!!!!

sista sue wrote:

McKenzie's comment was about one parent being chicken, and the other parent being gorilla, how is that so hard to understand people??? The people who were offended must be part chicken, and part gorilla, correct???

Seriously people! Mckenzie was making a stupid joke in the costume shop. I do not think that we need to be insulted by this or try to write letters to Bravo. Let's get a grip!

Annie wrote:

Mckenzie is a spoiled brat who thinks only about herself. She needs to appreciate what she has instead of taking everything for granted. I can't wait until she has to step out into the real world and support herself one of these days. Good luck with that.

I got such a good laugh at what the girls did. If anyone took offense they should have their heads examined. Get over yourselves people. This camping trip brought out the "real" in Ashley's family. Camping is what family trips are all about. McKenzie portrays herself as ignorant and unexperienced. Camping is not about bugs and dirt, it's leaving behind what you have in your wallet and appreciating what you have in a family, and learning to respect the great outdoors. When I was a little girl my family took trips like this every year. My first time seeing Old Faithful I though "big deal." A few years later my mother's illness (M.S.) kept us from doing any more family get-aways. Now I regret the fact I could not take those trips more often. I realize now that when we were together like this it was the strongest bond we have had. So keep those silly camping trips as a precious memory. A good laugh is worth having, even if it means temporarily letting go of the luxuries you're use to.

Please get away from the health drink angels. You seem more intelligent than they do, and being around them might destroy percious brain cells.
Those girls appear to be mentally disabled, and I can't understand a word they say. The head angel is especially stupid.
Moreover, those dirty old men make me sick!
Please, get out of that situation, it is not healthy for you.

Erika wrote:

I love the show - thanks for putting yourselves out there for others to watch. I have to say that I do not believe that MacKenzie meant anything offensive regarding her "interracial" comment. I am amazed at how deep some people really read into some things. She was wearing two different animal costumes...that's clearly as far as her joke went. The rest of you need to really relax and stop looking for things that aren't there. I do have to say, that I thought that the two men who are in charge of the OC Energy drink were completely inappropriate when you, Christen and Lindsey were trying on bikinis. I would have been very uncomfortable with their comments, and I do not blame you and Lindsey for not coming out of the changing room. They should be ashamed of themselves. They showed absolutely no respect.

Anyway, thanks again for being on the show - I love watching it.

These girls need time to realize how wonderful the JH/Yellowstone trip has been for them. They were by no means roughing it!...LOL I used to hate going "really camping" in a tent with my parents. Now..those are the most precious memories of my life! I've been all over the world and nothing compares the times we spent tent camping. I now take my children tent camping and to my surprise, they love it. It really gives them the freedom that no five star hotel can supply And yes, we've stayed at five star hotels many times. This was only due to no rooms available at the Holiday Inn Express! We head into the back country and have it to ourselves. The good old USA has so many of these places and it's mind boggling to me that the majority of the population has no idea they exist. You can swim in mountain streams with trout swimming all around. No..they don't bite. You don't have to worry about hair, makeup or looking chic. You rarely see anyone else and you are FREE! And as far as bugs go...MY GAWD...look around you. They're walking all around! hTake a magnifying glass and check your matress kids..you'll be very surprised!!. They're gonna eat you..LOL You guys just kill me. Guess you guys don't appreciate what the young people in Iraq are sacraficing for you!!!!!!!!! Why should you? That's just too harsh to face for someone who cares about someone seeing them without makeup! Yuck!!!! How dare I bring that up...LOL

ErinElizabeth wrote:

Wow people you need to simmer down. Erin, I whole heartedly agree with you. McK was talking about being from inter-racial parents as she was dressed as a CHICKEN. So, like Erin said unless you are part chicken or part gorilla, you have no business getting offended. I knew right away that idiots would get all worked up over that, you would think the viewers would be smarter than to flip out over something as silly as the comment she made. Don't you guys think that if it was meant in a racist way that Bravo would have aired it? NO, I highly doubt that they would. My point is this, McKenzie is not a racist and for any one to think so is ridiculous. She is a kid, give her a break for God's sake. And by the way, how many of you would take the option of not having your wealthy father support you at 18? I highly doubt that any one of you would turn the cash down at that age, or probably any age for that matter. People are hyper-sensitive, IT'S RIDICULOUS, GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lucy wrote:

GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZZ

I saw the "interracial" comment episode, got the joke immediatly and laughed my butt off....THEN days later read the blogs and saw how many people took it the wrong way. She meant a cross between the chicken suit and the gorilla suit as being biracial, NOT gorilla and human. SEE how things get started??? You just let a few people looking for a fight see a piece of something and they draw the whole thing out of proportion. Hate Mackenzie because she is a spoiled selfcentered brat, NOT because she was mistaken as a racist.

Avk wrote:

This is for Winnie, why does it matter to you that people took it offensively; I don't think you should comment on how others feel. I think its fine to say you didn't see the harm in it, I didn't either and I am bi-racial! Some people may have been offended and its ok, they don't have to get over there selves. You don't see them saying to you "how dare you agree with her you are so wrong." But for you to say "If anyone took offense they should have their heads examined. Get over yourselves people. Their is no racism, just lazeeee people who use excuses for their own problems and inadequacy” makes you seem like YOU NEED TO GET YOUR HEAD EXAMINED! Or maybe you are just bitter about something. Don't knock other's feelings. I think you should be able to express yourself with out the ridicule of others. You are not expressing yourself you are simply belittling others opinions.
