Ramblings of a Runway Producer: Rock and a Hard Place

August 2, 2006

Starting the blog this week, one of my favorite scenes from This is Spinal Tap comes to mind. Let me set the scene, if you will.

ruckerblog_spinaltap_325x1.jpg

Nigel Tufnel has just left the group after a spat with the honorable David St. Hubbins, leaving the group in a compromising position with no lead guitar. The following dialogue transpires between David and Derek Smalls:

DAVID: What are we going to do; we've got nothing to play here...
DEREK: I'll tell you what we're gonna have to do...
DAVID: What?
DEREK: Jazz odyssey!
DAVID: We're not going about to do a free-form jazz, uh, exploration in front of a festival crowd!
CUT TO: Spinal Tap, minus Nigel, jumps on stage in front of a festival "crowd."
DAVID: You are witnesses at the new birth of Spinal Tap Mach II, hope you enjoy our new direction...

If you know the scene I speaketh of, you are high-fiving yourself, giddy that you’ve grasped a cultural reference that on a par with someone quoting Dylan Thomas at a cocktail party in the Upper East Side. If you don’t, you are completely lost right now, and have deprivsed yourself of one of the most purely comic masterpieces since Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness.” Add it to your Netflix.

I love your blog. I just discovered it, I came over from Daniel's. I can't wait to read more. Keep it up!

Thanks for the dish, hot-Ruck! I wonder if Keith just felt a strange sense of entitlement. It seemed so, because he was always trying to get away with something. From not making an outfit for his dog to haggling for a discount at Mood and making his teammates do the tough stuff while he literally was on his back on the table. He just didn't really have "it" IMO.

Michael, once again a lovely blog. Are you enjoying getting to write about all of this?

I'm so glad you decided to change the way the models are chosen/assigned! I thought that Alison would have won with dog challenge if her model hadn't been walking with lead in her shoes. Thank you for taking the time to clue us in on the production side of things. You're the first blog I read after an episode has aired, and thoroughly enjoy your insight.

Angela better thank goodness she picked the two best designers on the show to work with her!

Thanks for the blog Rucker. I like your style^_~

Last nights episode was kind of rough to watch, but I think Keith got what was coming to him - good designer or not. And this conviction was confirmed when he started ranting to the other designers about how now he's a laughing stock, his reputation is tarnished etc...and he didn't sound sorry or ashamed as much as angry at the other contestants for turning him in. I know he didn't come right out and say that, but his tone had the slightest hint of accusation to it, which angered me and sealed my lack of sympathy for him. Maybe this will give him a much needed humbling without totally destroying his confidence, which was overblown in the first place. Check that ego, Keith!

Please oh please could you show the designers' SKETCHES for each challenge somewhere in the episode blogs (or Rate the Runway pages). Everything they create on the runway should be able to be compared to their original sketch, dontcha think? Especially in the instance of the INC challenge (or the Miss USA challenge) where the sketch is what sold the client on who got to be a team leader in the first place.

Tycho Brahe wrote:

Your blogs give us great insight on how things pan out in real time. It seems a bit inhumane to make all of you adhere to such a rigorous schedule. I did want to know: how did the producers handle having to produce one less episode? Isn't there some sort of airing schedule that you were aiming for? Or (since I read your blogs and know about a sponsor dropping out), did Keith's sudden departure make your job planning the next challenges a bit easier?

By the way, I think the quote was "Spinal Tap, Mark II." The Top Gun/Razor technology term "Mach" hadn't quite infiltrated the ether at the time Spinal Tap was filmed. Said the nerd.

Jen wrote:

I have a suggestion for shaking up the model selection: in season 4, maybe halfway through, give the models an opportunity to pick their designers!

Michael-- i love your blog. I, too, am a math nerd who loves the entertainment industry... I see me in your shoes one day (yikes). Anyways, just thought I'd tell you that you do an amazing job. Keep this thing updated, I enjoy it so much! :)

Great blog! Witty and quick! I love it! I love the Star Wars, Spinal Tap, etc. references - for these are things that only the truly enlightened of us gets! Thanks for the good read!

Awww, just when it was getting great, you have to stop with the blogs and go back to doing that pesky ol' work thang again! Definitely felt a little "verklempt" last night while watching Allison shed a tear after Keith's exit. Allison is too adorable to ever be made to cry, damn it! This is becoming by far the most tense season of PR; past seasons seemed to be a bit heavier on the goofiness. Perhaps that's also a reflection of the fact that so many of this season's contestants have more professional experience than past seasons, and so perhaps all of them take it a bit more seriously. Except maybe Bradley, the oceanless squid. God, I love that man.
p.s. So, have you gotten back to Daniel yet? The man adores you! ;-)

Love your blog, Ruck. Nice to hear about the show from the other end of things.

I realize that perhaps you can't say anything now, but at some point can you get into the reasoning for losing two designers this week? Specifically, aren't we down an episode now? Was there a double-elimination challenge somewhere further down the line that is getting scaled back, or...? I really can't figure it out! Bonnie's design wasn't my "favorite" thing I've ever seen, but surely it wasn't so horrible as to kill a whole hour of PR.

Sara wrote:

Hello!! While I love reading PR blogs, I must say that I don't like the style of minute-by-minute commentary; for three pages it seemed like you were just rehashing what we just watched on TV. I loved your previous blogs, however, and laughed out loud with the whole Lance example...

Also, is there any way that a bit more fun, or humor, be placed in future episodes? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the drama! I know it's too late to alter planned events (like the Nicky Hilton party with the designer walk-off...) But even with designer confessions, or maybe it's pacing.. this show seems a bit more dull than previous seasons. I am a huge fan, but I have to be honest. If the designers aren't saying or doing anything more interesting to use, than that's a shame.

Sheila wrote:

Was it illegal for Keith to get a discount on his materials? If not, why doesn't everbody try to do so to get a leg up? It seems very unfair.

Ariadne wrote:

I would LOVE a defense of why Keith's violation of the contract was so much more egregious than Kara Saun's that she deserved to stay and he was removed. In her case there was an IMMEDIATE financial award staring her in the face--so much more at stake--and instead she was given a pass. No one could seriously say that the "the judges won't take your shoes into account" had any effect on the outcome of the final competition. I'm not saying that Keith shouldn't have been sent home. He should have. However, let's get off the high moral horse. It is patently obvious that the status of filming and point in the season were relevant considerations. Otherwise, a violation of the rules that was blantatly equal and arguably worse would have resulted in Kara's being given the boot.

sorry-got lost inthe reference there. but yes. thanks for the free flow/new direction of the blog. it was highly amusing.

I'd like to thank Project Runway for upholding it's integrity and standing by the rules it established.

I think it is extremely important for young people to see that you must follow rules you agree to and if you don't there will be consequences. No more "Just one more chance."

Sure Keith is talented, maybe he was just insecure, but the fact is he violated two rules. He had the books and he left for several hours without permission.

Keith got a lesson in playing by other people's rules. I think it was good for him. Let's hope he's learned from it and makes good use of the lesson.

Love the witty banter and informative insight on your show... This is my first year watching, albeit, I have caught up on past seasons, thanks to the engaging marathon episodes, but I absolutely love this show... So creative! So inspiring! Thanks again!

Lyn wrote:

I was sorry to see Keith go, but it was clear he had to. Guess under all that bragging bluster he was quite insecure about his abilities. He stated on camera that he never used the books to give himself any unfair advantage, but I find that hard to believe since the books were right out there in the open and because in previous episodes he has been caught bending the truth.
Anyway, I liked the designs he came up with. If he wanted to swing by my home and design an entire wardrobe out of my sheets and towels, I would gladly wear them.

Loving the show...loving your blog....NOT loving the delay to buy the episodes on iTunes AT ALL! LOTS of angry people complaing there (see reviews). It's Friday afternoon. I don't understand why it isn't available yet. Some people do not have access to TV or cable and they rely on those files to watch the show. I'm really disappointed on the way iTunes and/or Bravo is handling this.

Thanks for the inside scoop!

I teach school, and use a lot of Tim-isms in my work. My kids are tv kids. They watch CSI and want to be forensic investigators. They watch PR and want to be designers. Now, some of them will read your blog and want to be ... you! Pretty cool.

Thanks for the view from the other side of the camera!

I think it's bs that all of the bloggers (exception Nick V) are being so "political" in portraying the whole Keith M. situation. Legal restrictions? Why not tell a deeper story about what really happened. Would make it a lot more real and interesting. Losing interest....

Rest of the cast seems rather dull too. You know when the creativity and the "snap" start getting replaced by a system, repition, and, I don't know, the business side of it all starts becoming really apparent....I don't know...just waiting for the wave to start falling.

Loved the Spinal Tap reference. Surprised that you're old enough to know it. I must chuckle whenever I hear "to keep the competition" fair. If that's the objective, we would let the judges do their judging and leave the producers' input out of it. To paraphrase Heidi of what she said in an interview, what makes PR great is the contestants can make something out of nothing. I am sure she didn't mean drama.

I truly love your blog. At last, pertinent information about the show that can't be shown on TV, for whatever reason.
Your wit and observations are very entertaining, and informative. Thanks. Tim Gunn - watch out - you have a rival!
PS(And thanks for not talking down to your not so hip and young readers.)

Hola Michael, I love your blog it's cool. The details are pretty much interesting. It's like a free pass to what's going on backstage. Well Project Runway has become one of my favorite show, even when I go back home to my home country( there there is no channel that gives PR,) I stay in touch through the internet even doe I knew I would have been watching it over and over again on bravo, but guess I'm just addicted, It's a great show you have going on. Some of my friends think I'm crazy watching it, well I think it's awesome and paying to stay in touch is worth it . Keep up the good work and yes I will WATCH WHAT HAPPEN!!!!

Good to see a fellow Minnesnowtan getting work outside the state! I linked over from Daniel V's blog, and it was so worth the trip. You express yourself very well (not suprised) and are infinitely more interesting to read than some of the other blogs centered the show. I mean who really cares about an hour with the models when you can hear about the mayhem and destruction going on in the designers' rooms??
Thanks for the great read and the inside look!

Agree about Kara Saun. Her models should have had to walk down the runway barefoot or she should have had to choose shoes from the ones Kors sent over. Top Gun/Razor technology? Ever watch an old cartoon called Speed Racer? His car was the Mach V mach five. Liked the Spinal Tap references myself. Will have to watch that movie again because it's been so long, I've forgotten too much of it.
