Rambling of a Runway Producer: Black/White/Green with Envy

September 13, 2006

Hoo-ray. I’m writing this blog at 3:14 in the am the day it’s due. Now, you might be thinking, “Michael, how could you be so sluggish and careless with your work?” But that’s where you’d be wrong, my friend. I’ve been working at least 14-hour days on the finale episodes this week and the fact that I can barely see my eyeballs due to their slow absorption into my darken eye sockets is proof of my dedication. As Kermit would put it, “It isn’t easy being green.” (Yes, that analogy is a stretch.)

Meh...I didn't really care for the ending.

*Warning: Rant ahead*

I am severely disappointed in the judges this week. I also, following my dreams, hoped Kayne would stay and be one of the final three.

I think Laura's dress was...simplistic. Laura is capable of so much more sophisticated designs, but seeing as this was a design of sophicistication, I knew it was down to her and Michael. I actually thought Kayne's dress fit the category, save for the ribbon. I believe if he was a bit more creative in how he lined the back, then it might've kept him in. I despised Jeffrey's dress, though. The more I think about it, the more I can see how Jeffrey won the Couture challenge - that dress was absolutely beautiful, but like the judges noted, can he do anything other than the "rocker"?

At least Laura and Kayne kept the "cocktail" theme in mind.
*vent*
I wish Kayne were still on...I loved watching him...

The past two seasons, I could just about predict who would win. The only thing I didn't predict was that they would pass on Daniel V due to his "lack of experience".

I am extremely saddened by this turn...

Perfect show! I'm sorry Kayne left too, Jeffery (or however you spell it) isn't the most likeable guy in town, but so be it. Laura's dress was beautiful and if it hadn't been her, it would have been Michael again. If he doesn't "take it all", I'll be really surprised! Get some sleep MJ, I expect to party this weekend!

Maybe it's just that it's late, maybe it's got to do with being 49 & pre-menopausal & hormonal, but I was SO glad to read in your blog that Jia is OK, and modeled in Malan's show.

I do enjoy your late-night-not-always-sober ramblings. Please keep up the good work!
It seems a bit bitchy, but as a long-time seamstress and occasional designer (everything from Renaissance Faire clothing to cocktail dresses), I was pleased to see Angela & Vincent out again. I liked Kayne's dress, but understand that it didn't really meet the criteria. Jeffery is a one-trick pony, and I really haven't liked his last two dresses AT ALL.
I am demonstrating remarkable tact here by not commenting on the fact that (to put it politely) he is the biggest jerk on this show in it's entire 3-year history. (Must admit though, that he ought to have won the recycling challenge! that dress really flowed!)
I do appreciate your comments and the insider view of the production side of things. Keep up the fine work, and next time, I'm sure you'll do better on the SAT :-)

Sal-utations! Just a note to say I really enjoy your blog...and frankly am AMAZED that you've been able to produce the volume of visuals & wordage in the amount of time alloted. If I could award a People's Choice Production Award...the "Elves" would reign SUPREME. Enjoy your sleep...well deserved.
On another (quick) note, your blog;
RE: Zac Posen: "However, when I found out that he is three years younger than I am, I basically decided to quit life and live in a log cabin up in the northern woods of Minnesota subsisting on a diet of figs and dried herring". (25? Really? Damn, that’s depressing.)

**Welcome to the CLUB (smiles)... a year or so ago they announced Daniel Craig as the new James Bond. The blondness was no big issue for me, the being two years younger than me...well, that just seemed unholy.
Being a girl, you'd think that "Bond's age" would be inconsequential, but it was a stark reality to think Britain's hottest Super-gadget Spy-Guy was now "my little brother"....takes the wind outta your sails, a bit.

So ~~~ sometime in the distant future when Daniel Radcliff is declared the new "Bond", (or the Sprouse Twins as Agent 014), I know you'll fare well... having already touched upon the cruel reality of "the aged". (ha!) Warm Regards...keep writing.

That old photo was when you were on whatever inspired The Blair Witch Project, right? Loved The Blair Witch Project because my usually cynical and skeptical niece got sucked in by all the based on true events, real life movie garbage on the internet about the Blair Witch, and I teased her unmercifully about it until she just seethed in anger and frustration because she couldn't find a way to get me back. You look very, very Blair Witch fake documentary in that photo. Both loved and hated this challenge. Loved the black and white theme and the auf'ed designers coming back. The look on the last five designers faces was worth watching the whole show. Hated the fact that they had to use every last scrap of fabric. Hated Laura's nastiness to Angela, just hated it. The condescending you-don't-deserve-to-be-here remarks of "Your win was a team win, so it's hardly fair that you got to come back." Real loser attitude via her mouth from Laura and remarks like that are just one of a multitude of reasons that I can't stand Laura. What I really would have loved was for either Angela or Vincent to have won that challenge so that two of the last five would have been out and one of them been back in. Now, that would have been have a great episode if one of them just could have risen to the challenge.

I just watched the video of you as a little boy, Michael, and I must say you were an adorable child! What happened?! Just kidding, you're still pretty cute.

On another note, I just spent two weeks in France and ironically missed out on watching the two Project Runway episodes filmed in Paris. Luckily, there were still the PR website and your blog to check out. The friend I was visiting couldn't understand why I just had to get online to read your blog. But I was going through Rucker and Project Runway withdrawal!

Okay, I'm sorry, but bringing back Vincent and Angela sucked. They both were auf'd for good reasons and they'd had plenty of opportunity to strut their stuff!

Here're a couple of ideas for you if you want to do something like this next season:

1. Bring back the first two auf'd designers and let them have another chance at showing what they can do.

2. Let the non-fashion folk on the show pick their fave two. As in, you and the other producers and the crew and everyone but Heidi and Nina and MK and Tim. That way Alison could have come back!

Seriously. Have your people call my people or something. I'm *full* of ideas. XD (Or full of something anyway.)

I realize you have no control of how things are put up or represented on the web site, but I have to say that when I clicked on the videos to see "Michael's childhood pictures" I was sort of jarred to see a little white boy as I was thinking it would be Michael Knight's childhood pictures. It made me think of "The Jerk" where Steve Martin was reflecting on growing up a "poor black child" only in reverse.

Ok first? I am totally bummed to see Kayne go. He cracked me up. But oh well. I knew it was coming eventually, so I guess today had to be the day. Boo hoo!

Second? So much of the premise of this episode seemed totally contrived. The bringing back of Vincent and Angela? I could be wrong, but I only remember Heidi saying anything about 'special benefits to winning that will be revealed in a later episode' once, and it wasn't when either of those two won. I thought it was maybe the Jet Setting challenge. It just seemed like you guys were concerned that once Vincent and Angela were gone, all the drama was too, so you had to bring them back. What didn't help was that when I watched this episode, I had somehow convinced myself that cute Bradley B. had won the dog challenge, which I realize now that he didn't. So I was even more confused why he didn't come back too if you were bringing back designers who had won.

Anyhow. The other thing that made no sense was the whole 'use all of the fabric you bought' angle to the challenge. The hell? What does that have to do with ANYTHING? Like that ever happens in real life for a designer. Ok. I guess in real life, designers also never have to make an oufit out of plants, groceries, their recycling, or things in their apartment. But this particular twist seemed to have absolutely no point.

i can't believe you quoted the tick! man, that rules. also, michael should win. kayne should come hang out with me. someone needs to kick jeffrey in the balls. laura gets props for knowing her own name after bearing 5 children and finding another one in the oven (i'd be rubber-walling it). uli should make me a dress. and, is angela that annoying in real life?

I am so happy I finally was able to view your blog. Either BRAVO was having problems or my own puter had a headache.

I want to thank you for all of the inside info. I do not judge the designer's by their actions, only by their clothing. I just wish some of the silliness of the challenges would be gone, and we can see more of the designing...plus give the designer's more time to finish same.

My personal favorites were Jeffrey, Keith and Laura.

Thank you, Michael, for your writings. I appreciate it.

Oh. My Goodness! You quoted both the Tick and The Princess Bride! Now all you need is a tirade on mawidge (wot bwings us togevah today) and we'd be all set.

So, um. I love your blog? Although I'm kind of surprised Jeffrey didn't leave after his fugly leggings, but I do know that he's misstepped far fewer times than Kayne. So I guess it's ok, even though our little Kaynebow will no longer shine for us.

Did you know that you're mentioned on an OutZone blog interview with Robert? Here's the excerpt (and it reminds me a lot of what Danny V said while he was pimping your blog, back in the days when it needed said pimpage):

"Did you get any action on the show?

I made out with the entire crew 90% of the time. Cuz there were a whole bunch of hot camera men and boom operators and producers. So I was really busy. Especially Rucker, because he … oh my God, I can’t. I want to tell a big Michael Rucker lie because everyone loves him, but he would kill me and it’d be sadly untrue.

No, we were told very specifically not to engage in any hanky panky, and honestly, even though the crew was sort of fascinating to me -- I was so exhausted and you’re just so fried from all the challenges and not getting enough sleep and waking up at odd hours to dig through trash, you just lose your… the last thing you’re thinking about is sex. Even though yes, I did think very un-Christian thoughts about Michael Rucker."

Aaaand I'm done. :)

Michael, I love your blog, I can't wait to read it every week. I think it's funny that your mom sends comments in.

I think PR should invite an "auf'd" designer back each new season. Daniel F. came back last season, and I would love to see Allison come back again. What a different show it would be if she'd been around longer.

How about a "Viewers Choice" invite to come back?

P.S. Twenty-nine is not so bad! I'm almost 43 and life is pretty good in one's 40's!

Seriously I forgot all about that pic once I started reading...well done and a wonderful birdseye background of just how this very well done reality show, well...gets done...very well.

P.S. Dude, your blog is featured far too low on the bloogers positioning for right now given the say, 5 week exposure window you may have left, take out what is yours, NOW! This is not to meant to note that some of the bloggers, well, they just don't entertain and the Bravo website sucks to nagivate to boot. Ok, so just maybe, maybe you drop into oblivion after the show ends until next season but hey strike while the iron is hot I say!

P.S.S. Really, Bravo...

NOTE TO SELF

1) Move Rucker right below TimG, and above Andy and all those other Bloogers.

2) Get contract for PR and Top Chef webmasters that can make them stand out from the rest of the boards.

3) Hire some serious geeks, nerd types...(I don't mean quasi types to fix the freaking web site either. You guys are being made fun of in some other places and I'm only really nerdy/geek by association...as in blood son and hub, forced to learn it, but even I know a dog when I see it.

4) To Rucker's Mom...you done good!

dear rucker,
let me preface this by saying i'm a PR junkie (i was one of the 10 finalists for the ultimate fan blog... i'm the one who wanted/still wants to know who is designing heidi's clothes! damn you producers! can't you just add a little credit at the end for me? at least put it on the dvd!)
anyway, i've got to say, this season is underwhelming... i'm sorry. i can tell from reading your blog that you work really hard to entertain me. but, i want OLD SCHOOL PR! $100 limits, 1 day time limits, dresses made of vegetables! this vamped up, 300 euros, tressemme crap sucks. i feel you've sold out a bit. :( i only watch these days out of habit, and to know what you and tim are talking about when i'm reading your blogs.
of all 3 seasons, i'm most frustrated with the judging this season. wendy the witch scraped by, but was at least in the bottom 2 each week (and won 2 challenges when it counted); & santino should have been gone when he dressed kara up like a star trekkie. but, come on, now... if Uli cannot physically SEW a sleeve (and that thang for kayne's mama don't count) should she still be here? really now... every week her dress is the same as the week before, long, flowy, strappy, and silky. talk about one-note. i don't like angela, but at least her designs were different every week.

so, i checked out pics of jay mccarroll's new line. AND THERE YOU WERE!! I mean, i don't know for SURE that's you all glammed up on the runway, but i'd bet on it! i thought that was a damn good pick up on my part. and you looked pretty good in that flashy outfit!
anyway, that's it... see, you should have voted for MY blog! (by the way, whattup with the UltFanBlog, aka BoringBlog...)
Respectfully,
Sami
p.s. i saw pics of Uli's line, too...and, surprise... AN ALL SLEEVELESS LINE!

what in the world is up with bravo's main page showing photos from fashion week with all 4 designers showing?? aaaaa.. this is throwing me all askew. i got nervous when i didn't see michael & then finally when i saw a couple of models showing his designs i got even more nervous because the other designers outnumbered him in pictures. say it ain't so! i thought last week's episode was a nice twist although i thought Angela & Vincent were most un-threatening. Nonetheless, I was surprised. Thank you for another edition of your blog despite the overwhelming pull of exhaustion & craving for sleep. You look cute when you're sleepy-ish :)

hi Michael,
since you are one of the producers, I appeal to you to save this show before it careens totally off course, crashes and burns! I appreciate your hard work, but I'm sure alot of hard work went into other duds too, so dont let that be a determining factor of quality, because its not...sorry. Project Runway needs to go back to the basics, about design, challenges, creativity and innovation, NOT drama, personal gripes, ego trips!
If we wanted that we could watch Big Brother or some other fluff reality show. I am so disappointed in this season, from the stupid challenges, the addition of petty dramas, the too-tight deadlines, the inconsistent judging...I could go on, but you get the idea.
I know that no one is listening now because you seem to have a growing audience now, but hey, look at 'snakes on a plane' - it had plenty buzz, but fizzled at the box office! It could happen to Project Runway- dont believe your own hype.

Michelle wrote:

Michael.... I am so dissappointed in the rerun that aired last night instead of the latest edition that every Wednesday night brings its fans. Fashion Week is over (I believe), so obviously the show has been completely taped for PR3. What happened? I look forward every week to the latest chapter, and I feel manipulated by last nights dissappearance act. You producers owe the fans an explanation.

I was so hurt by the last episode of Project Runway, the comments about Michael being good with "sports wear" was a huge insult. He is great at making women's evening wear. Actually he had been great every episode. But it was so stereotypical and blatantly incorrect to say Michael is a sportswear designer. What has he done that was "sporty" even the outfit he did for himself would not be considered sportswear. It sounded like the judges were trying to put him in some kind of category... basically the producers and judges were letting us know they have no intention on having Michael win because he never does sports clothing that's not his designing style at all. Bravo is really pushing me to remove their channel from my TV completely. Very disappointed fab
