Ramblings of a Runway Producer: The Last Ramble

October 18, 2006

“This is the end, my only friend, the end. Of our elaborate plans, the end. Of everything that stands, the end. No safety or surprise, the end, I’ll never look into your eyes … again.” -- The Doors

Okay, so the passage above could be construed as a bit morbid, but hey, honestly I couldn’t come up with another song lyric encapsulating closure more than Jim Morrison’s words. (And I did wrack my brain for all of ten seconds.) But this is truly it, people: the Swan Song, the Curtain Call, Mary Jane’s Last Dance. Who would have thought that going from 15 bright-eyed and bushy tailed designers to our final four would have been so full of the unexpected? Now, if you would have told me that we’d have one designer reveal she was pregnant on the show, another designer have America fall in love with him after a two-show sting, a designer kicked off, and two designers face off over their mother’s love, my head would have exploded ala Scanners.

ruckerblog_scanners_291x195.jpg

Thankfully, my head wasn’t removed from my body and the final four designers -- Uli, Jeffrey, Michael and Laura -- all possessed the qualities Project Runway: Tokyo Drift sought out all those months ago.

Now, I could attempt some faux-witticisms about the whole Jeffrey OutsourceGate, which would most likely include some quote from the Oscar winner for Best Picture in 2001.* (“Are you not entertained?”) But honestly, the whole situation cast a dark cloud on the last few days of shooting.

*Have you seen Gladiator recently? I mean, it’s fun and all, but really, are we to believe that it should be seated along side Annie Hall or Braveheart? Okay, I guess it can sit next to Braveheart.

This was utter and total bull. Jeffrey was the LEAST talented of the group - I consider this election fraud. Were there hanging chads? Or pregnant chads? (excluding Laura) How could you possibly ALLOW this to happen? Uli clearly rocked the runway. Shame on you, Rucker, shame on you. What the he*! were you guys thinking? I may have to boycott the show from now on...

I never thought that I could actually enjoy reading someone's entry more than I enjoy Tim Gunn's, but you proved me wrong. Maybe it was the allusions to Silence of the Lambs (it made me feel like I wasn't the only one that appreciated the film for its comedy), the behind the scenes insight, or other references to random things. Whatever the cause maybe, I sincerely hope that you are able to write next season.

Darling Darling Michael J. - what a finale! what a show! how we loved the entire season, how we've loved our Wed.nite phone-table, how we've loved every 'rambling' blog and playing "did you catch that allusion?", and especially, how we've loved all the laugh -out -loud moments the blog gave us. So we won't get into the family's need for psychiatric aide here - instead I'll leave you with this one, (my sometimes dark-side son): while Sully sits in the prison , surrounded by the saddest examples of humanity, he begins watching the cartoons being shown on 'movie night' and is amazed at the transformation of the men around them as laughter fills the room. At the end, he is told, 'now that you've seen the suffering around you, we'll let you make your movie, "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou." And Sully says he doesn't want to do that anymore, "because there is a lot to be said for making people laugh. Do you know that that's all some people have? It isn't much, but it's better than nothing in this cockeyed caravan." (I have no doubt you will find the source for me in record time) So thank you, thank you for all this!! love you, Momz

Love The Doors. Of course, I was literally a child of the 1960's in the 1960's and so well remember older neighbors' obsessions with Jim Morrison their dark god. If you think you're still seeing him when in the Atlanta area, know that a couple of guys who work security/private detective around these parts could be Jim Morrison if he never aged beyond the day he died or if he de-aged and came back in time. Just like a manager for a restaraunt where I worked nights and weekends manager in the mid 1980's could pass for Kurt Cobain of Nirvana from a little distance. Up close, you might see a few little differences. Andy is alive and Kurt dead, so ghosts aren't always ghosts. Still and yet, the finale isn't up to season one's finale. However, with brief views of the outfits before this last episode, I knew that I was going to be disappointed and I was because everyone was down a bit at least from season one even Jeffrey although I thought he truly deserved to win. What the he** happened to Michael? I mean, I expected Laura to truly suck, but Michael's collection started out with a big bang and then went downhill and lost cohesiveness and his two short wild print dresses were so very Uli. Well, at least they weren't Laura dresses. Ho hum yawn.

Well, it has been a fun two and half seasons. I would say three seasons but watching the last half of season three has been like pulling teeth. I just want to say that I will not be watching season four as last night just destroyed this show for me. Neither will my roommate nor the people at work. So that it is a total of eight people who will not return for season four. Not a lot of viewers I know, but I can not help but wonder how many other viewers feel the same way? I would go into all of the reasons but you probably do not care. So in the words of Heidi,
We believe in your talent, however, your product did not fulfill our expectations. It was inconsistent, predictable, and worse boring. You're out!! Aufvederstain!!

MJR- This was the best blog yet. You will always be the coolest nerd I know! (Maybe because we're cut from the same cloth, like the "fashion" reference!) See I am a geek-- your adoring sister.

To the folks out there, that actually spend time ranting/weeping/etc about the show and how they won't watch it anymore...get a grip. Firstly, Jeffery won because he had the best collection (I was at the show and have to say that it just didn't translate as well on TV, but if you check out the press photos, its clear it was the most coherent and vibrant). It wasn't a contest to see who was the nicest person. There's a reason we use the cliche "nice guys finish last".

I think we can rest assured that all 4 designers will be successful in there own ways. It's TV folks! We're not watching someone discover the cure for cancer or put roofs over the heads of those that don't have them and don't even know PR exists.

PR is an ENTERTAINING/wonderful/fun/funny/intriguing (sometimes enlightening) guilty pleasure! There is no bigger fan than I, but let's keep it in perpective!

I think it was the best season yet! Good wishes to all that worked their asses off to bring this "guilty pleasure" to cable TV subscribers everywhere! And good luck to all the designers that were willing to expose themselves to the masses, may they all have their own success.

Ciao for now

Its unfortunate that like all other reality programs - post first season -project runway has become so staged by the producers to assure a set format. It's amazing how stupid you producers think the audience is. Alas project runway has become predictable as a sitcom. Of course Jeffrey had to win, I mean we have already seen the over-the-top gay guy, and a woman win. That meant the only ones who really had a shot were Michael and Jeffrey. Everyone knows that, amazingly, Uli did it. She forced the producers to keep her in the final by stepping it up in the last round before fashion week and then she did it again at the end. If she would have won then there would be some REALITY in this show. But no, it was long decided that it had to be Jeffery or Michael. Uli would be too boring a post-show winner (ala Chloe). Uli proved herself more than anyone else. Despite the fact that she was never my favorite, she deserved it. Oh, and in those final blurbs by the judges where you try to "fool" the viewer - e.g. "Uli has the most wearable designs" and "people were coming up to me asking about how to get in touch with Uli" which HINTED that she would be picked. And then the comment "what about Jeffery going over budget?" that HINTED he would not win. These gave the winner away immediatly - pathetic attempts to throw off the viewer. Producers, give us a break, give us some credit, give us some REALITY!!!!!!!!!

Congrats on a great season. I want to add that the editing last night of each model in succession during the judging was awesome. As a former TV News person in the 80s in a small Texas market, and who had to edit her own stuff at times, it made my heart skip a beat. You had great editing this year, but that was one of the best jobs.

Dear Michael,
I enjoy your point of view and clever comments. As a producer, you will have to hear from faithful (albeit disappointed) fans too.
I find it difficult to fathom how PR could allow such a loathsome creature who crawled out of the primordial ooze to continue in the contest -let alone win. His behavior was pitiful ("I'm a recovering addict, poor me...") while mocking every other designer and making a client cry, no less. The good news is: most of his possible clients will be unable to keep their purchasing power, due to using most of their funds to buy drugs and CDs. The rest of the buying public will be purchasing real clothes from reputable designers. Jeffrey, in short, will become a has-been and fade into oblivion, where he belongs!
He may have fooled some of the people all of the time, but not all of the people... My interest in watching PR has spiralled downward. I doubt that I will view future seasons. Too bad, as it was my favorite show (even in rerun form).
As for Macy's backing this side show freak (with tatoos galore), I am burning my Macy's credit card in effigy.

This finale was a disaster. The wrong person won, period. Aside from Jeffrey's freak-show, physically abhorant appearance; his Santinoesque criticisms of the fellow designers did not validate him. Basically, throughout the show, he deserved to be auf'd many times over. Examples include (but not limited to): The black/white challenge was far from chic. The pattern was anemic and the leggings were laughable. His "dowdy, milkmaid" dress "did not work on any level". Yet, miraculously, he was allowed to move forward. Obviously, his "product" appeals to a select group of nutritionally deprived, intellectually starved, drug addled band of rebellious losers. Tell Heidi regarding Jeffrey's win: "Dass ist eine Schade". Season 4 - auf wiedersehen von mir.

Ann wrote:

I really don't understand the exoneration process. It seems to have focused on examining receipts. Obviously, a designer would not submit the receipts for outsourcing. Tim Gunn announced that he and the producers were confident that Jeffrey did not outsource. I'm guessing that was based more upon examining his collection?

Looking back at the episode where Keith was disqualified for breaking the rules, he apparently never actually used the pattern books. The designers are followed by cameras 24/7, therefore, if he had actually used the books to his advantage, the producers would have known about it long before it was brought to their attention by Keith's fellow designers. Therefore, Keith was disqualified for merely possessing the books and was never given the opportunity to get rid of the books and rectify the situation. Now, fast-forwarding to the finale....Jeffery broke the rules by going over budget. Yet, the mere possession of materials totaling more than $8000 was not enough to disqualify him. Not only was he allowed to rectify the situation by getting rid of the "illegal" extras, he was rewarded in the end by being named the winner. If the producers took a strict-constructionist view of the rules and regulations in Keith's situation, then they should have done the same in Jeffrey's situation.

The inconsistencies in judging over the course of the season were hard enough to stomach, but when you add the inconsistencies in the repercussions of breaking the rules, I feel as though Project Runway has lost a lot of credibility.

All the praise for you done, I must say that I think the judges were smoking something particularly strong when they gave Jeffrey the win. Don't get me wrong, he's got talent, but his wasn't the best collection in my opinion. Michael was my favorite for most of the season, but I can honestly say that I thought Uli had the best collection. There wasn't a single item in her collection that I wouldn't consider buying. Although Michael & Laura were my favorites throughout the whole season and I really wanted one of them to win, I must admit surprisingly Uli's collection was the ABSOLUTE BEST. She was the underdog who out shined them all and totally deserved to win. I loved this show up until Jeffrey won. Of course the majority of the public thinks he's a jerk (myself included), but I entered the finale with an open mind and truly wanted the best display to win (even if it was Jeffrey's). It's fine to have all the drama and ratings oriented shows throughout the season (it's actually very entertaining). However, when it comes to choosing the winner, we all want REALITY. Otherwise, what's it all for? Because even if our favorite designer does not win, at least we will find comfort and accept the fact that the best man/woman won. Maybe Uli was boring and may
melt into the wood work and Jeffrey's wild man routine would send your ratings soaring into orbit, but you must admit that Uli's collection was THE GREATEST. Please don't make us boycott your show because you choose personality ratings over reality. Because at the end of the day, we all would like the most deserving person not to be cheated out of winning. KEEP IT REAL!!!!

But nothing they sent down a runway was designed specifically for low class hooker plying her trade and trying to convince her john's she is still a virgin. There was nothing, nothing, nothing, about Jeffrey's work all season that even looked like "design" or that he knew anything about a pattern. And, I like many others wonder what the judges were thinking about the"jet set" garbage he was wearing. Please, what airport guards allowed him through the metal detector? Not in LA that's for sure.

No, this was fixed... I am sure the so-called judge's were paid off and probably the fact that a Sicilian was in the running for the second season in a row had something to do with it. Rucker-here's hoping you are around for PR4-you are a hoot. Could you pass on a constructive criticism from a loyal viewer?
The day you change it to "a combination of the judges and the public" a la "American Idol" and "Dancing With the Stars" is the day you lose me. I thought the "mid-show" votes this season were gimmicky and intrusive. And the Fan Favorite thing-come on. It is a skills contest, not a popularity contest.
Why can't we have more construction details, more real "fashion info" and lose the tricks. This season had the most talented craftsmen yet, and what did we see? Jeffrey and Angela's mother in a pissing contest (get over it people-they BOTH needed slapped), many shots of them doing personal grooming in the bathroom, (do we really need to see all that toothbrushing and hair tweaking?) and Vincent "getting off" all over things. ugh. Instead of the personal stabbings going on during the breakout interview soundbites, how about the designers talking about...gasp...their garments. "I used this fabric because....I set the sleeve this way because...I changed my mind mid-sew beacuse..." Much more apropos to the concept of the show. Or just show us more of the runaway conversations-same diff. But it's a FASHION show-not MTV's Sewing HouseParty. I really don't care if they like each other or not-get back to the garments.
Unless there's another musical coming. THAT was classic.

I have been an avid fan of Project Runway from the beginning. I was naive in believing that in the end the playing field was equitable and the most talented designer would win. The fact that Jeffrey won this competition is horrendous! His total lack of regard for common decency, playing by the rules ,adhering to the show's guidelines and most of all his 1 note talent was obvious to all who watched. I think this is a poor reflection on the integrity of the people making the decisions, and thankfully, I can choose not to watch this program in the future. I am very disappointed and discouraged that a show with entertainment value and a supporter of striving artists chose to take the "low road and provide us with a staged competition." I commend Laura on her talent, her courage in stating the obvious and her class in accepting this erroneous decision that Jeffrey completed his own work .

It's a shame this decision by the judges has been such a poor one - let's hope you will bring this feedback to the table for PR4.

sheryl wrote:

I want to add my voice to the others who have expressed their disgust and dismay at the way in which the outsourcing of Jeffrey's work was "investigated". With such a short period of time to investigate, how much could really be done? Were the employees in his workroom in LA interviewed? Honestly, what would the producers expect his receipts to reveal? If there was outsourcing, obviously those receipts would not be turned in - more likely payment would be made either in cash under the table or in exchange for services to be rendered later.

Aside from the fact that the producers obviously had to make "exceptions" to keep Jeffrey in the final four, there is the question of how his line could possibly be judged "the best." By what what standards: wearablility? marketability? beauty?, innovation?
I am so disappointed in your final decision, and must question the integrity of the show itself. How, after all the things that came to light in the final week , could you as producers possibly single out Jeffrey and his work as the best - by ANY standard - of the final four.

I believe that the deception that so many of us viewers suspect took place will come to light in time. We viewers were robbed, and you producer disgraced yourselves by choosing ratings over truth.

But knowing there will be no more Rucker's blog for a while. boooohoooohoooohoo.. :)

Please tell me you will continue blogging!

Unlike most people I love the fact that Jeffrey won. His hard work and diligence are an inspiration to me. As a pianist, I know that hard work and practice are what will get you there.

Miss you Rucker ((love)) and ((hugs))...

Thanks for all the blogging - I always read but never commented. However, being Scottish and a football (it's 'real' name) fan, I wonder how you aquired your knowledge of the *ahem* atmosphere at such occasions? And in case you read this..a favour...I need to find out the name of the track used in Uli's show for something to do with work - really - and would be mucho appreciative.

I have watched Project Runway from its start with the first Season. I really think the
designers this season came with much better skills than the previous seasons. It is incredible to think that they pumped out the looks they did given that they had much less time.

I have 2 suggestions:

1. I don't think established designers--those with current lines under production-- should compete with those just satarting out. I think the one thing about Jeffrey that wasn't fair was that he finished his collection in a well equiped, professional works shop compared to the others working with much less equipment.

2. A suggestion for the next season. Give each designer a bag of thrift store items---however many you think might be needed--and have them create a look using the materials.

3. Considering my comment about Jeffrey's edge, maybe that might be an idea for a new show--pit the up and comers who have a business that hasn't taked off yet.

Rucker, I'm both entertained and informed by your journalistic abilities - you're pretty good. Now, I want to share with you some of the question/statements that I submitted into Tim Gunn's blog and want to ask you the same question. It is unacceptable that the producers and judges thought that people were not able to see through their trickery; also, I'd like to add that I will not make as big an effort to follow PR next season - I HATE DECEPTION. Please read below & I'd like to read your thoughts on it as well.

PR3 Winner Choice by Judges & Producers

>>>...Tim, ...I have become mesmerized by PR and consider myself a loyal viewer; however, I cannot help think that Jeffrey Sebelia's choice as winner of PR3 was somehow jaded. Sebelia truly appears to be talented and innovative, and I commend him tremendously for turning his life around, but just the fact that he could not provide you with the receipt for the garment that he happened to have outsourced, raises enough doubts in my mind. I cannot help but think that there was some funny business going on behind the scenes and it was apparent to most of us: your very intelligent and sophisticated audience.
Don't you think that the shows producers and judges are sending mixed messages, since a totally different and drastic action was taken for very similar circumstances when Keith Michael was found to have broken the rules of the show?

Rucker, man, how stoked are you!?!
You have a few dozen girlfriends in this blog, alone. Some of the other commenters even seemed to think you had the power to influence the judges, lol.
It is to these Soup Queens I feel the need, like your sister, to "enlighten." Talent + Experience = Winner. Need more proof? See Top Chef. Betti is winning. She, like Jeff, has made & been in a business already. HUGE ADVANTAGE.
Anyway, Rucker, you have an admirable character. It's not only revealed in you humor, but also your attitude. (I think of all the people I see daily who succumb to the negative energy of their "lack of..." mentality.)
Hope to see you back for #4, if & when.

Cheers

I have to admit that I was a PR virgin and had too many obsessed friends not to give this latest season a look. Obviously I was hooked from the very first show. I was rooting for Laura (although initially it pained me to say so) because I thought her fashions were just different enough to carry her all the way. I was thrilled to see her make it to the final four. Sorry but I can't say the same about Jeffrey. His attitude really sucked and, frankly, I can't imagine anyone wearing his clothes. Anyway, the question I have is this: Does anyone know anything about the music that played during Uli's segment of the final runway walk?

Rucker, are you Michael Kor's love child? or maybe his love brother? You look so much alike!

You're missed - see you next season.

I vote for Uli's collection too. There isn't one piece in there that I wouldn't buy. I was shocked by Jeffrey's win - his collection looks so cheap. I think that given time Uli will be the more successful designer.

Hi I was just wondering if anybody knows when the 4th season of Project Runway is going to start?
Thanks!

I actually loved Michael's runway looks and I felt that the wrong individual won, but hey I guess when you have outside help you can do that:(:(

Hi - suggestion for fab show: get the "seasoned" runway models, like Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Naomi Campbell, Rachel Hunt, Kimora, etc., to do a runway show, either on Project Runway or as a special with Michael Kors' designs. These ladies still look fantastic and their target audience would be huge - the baby boomers! Just a thought - I know I'd love to see such a show.

On the runway during Jefferys line-does anyone know what that song was? I can't get into the blogs or boards as my security setting will not allow it but I thought I'd give this a try.

Rucker, I hope we can look forward to a weekly inside scoop from our favorite candid producer this season.

More blogs? Huh? Huh huh?

You better come back. I felt like I lost a friend when your blog ended and I often needed your random, irreverent humor. Plus, your off-the-wall references often made my day. Please, please come back.

I'm an English teacher, and I give your blog an A++++++. Sorry I didn't notice it sooner, but I was grading 180 frightening middle school essays. Please, write a book-you are FANTAN, as my kids would say.........................BTW, I started crying when Jeffery swung the baby in the air, so I'm glad he won, but I'd only wear Uli's outfits.
