I am a stlyist in Tampa, FL and I was very excited to see the technical part of Sally's Shag. I love the show and it is just an honor to watch Sally teach. She has been so gracious with the way she critics the hair stylists with out putting them down. I am always embarrassed the way t.v. shows protray "us" stylists. She represents the hairdressers of the world in a classy manor. Thank you Sally for being confident without being cocky.

That would be a challege that I've never encountered, nor have I dreamed of encountering as a stylist. I applaud all that kept their cool, because the next biggest thing to technical skills is confidence, and that might have made me question my skills. I also would have loved to have received a class on how to do the "Meg shag". That is a celebrity name that comes up a lot in my chair, and has inspired me to covet my razor as my favorite tool. I probably would have picked boxcutters, too, for the edgy look.

I don't think it was fair to eliminate someone based on viewing you do a cut for the first time in their life for 30 minutes. I mean the girl looks like she comes from Podunk Timbuktu Iowa. She's probably never heard of Meg Ryan or the Shag for that matter.
Lastly, please don't fail us, the viewers, by putting time constraints on the contestants. We'd rather see awesome finished products than see crappy products from everyone. Not EVERY client walks in demanding you cut their hair YESTERDAY. And, if you're a noted hairstylist you'd tell that person to go to hell anyway. And, for those that call up at midnight and say they have an emergency haircut and style before they get on the red eye for their big shoot in Saskachuwan, they'd still wait for you to finish they style, if you were so inclinded to roll out of bed and actually do it.

I agree that Evangelin went out on a limb with those hedge clippers. Her surprising results were simply wonderful. She definitely deserved the win!!
However, I must admit that I don't understand your self promotion of "your" signature hair style creation. Need I remind you that the shag was made truly famous back in 1971 when Jane Fonda had one for the film Klute and throughout her Vietnam War protest days? Are you claiming glory for a hairstyle that was popularized probably before you were born???

I agree with Shaka about the unrealistic time constraints--I would rather see more polilshed products that come from analysis. But, this is a game show after all, and time limits have always been part of these challenges. Part of the stylist's creativity shows in how he or she handles the given time boundaries. They have to make choices and trade-offs. Sometimes, these choices are incorrect and therefore show the inexeperience of the stylist.
I like Tabatha too. She has her own intriguing style. There is nothing cutesy about her and I find that refreshing.

Parts of this week’s show really bothered me; you start with a lesson from Sally on how to execute her signature cut -- a cut that takes precision, accuracy, and skill (it better, with the prices she can charge). That part of the show was excellent, and it really showed what the stylists can and cannot do. Then you make a mockery of that and of the profession as a whole by making the stylist cut with tools that were never intended to be used on hair. I think it was unfair and unprofessional. If this is being done to mimic the other Bravo shows --flowers for design, food from a gas station --this is a totally different thing ; these poor models have to wear that hair, and even if they are recut and colored and so on after the show that sort of misses the point, don’t you think?. Again, to be a professional takes time, talent, education, and professionalism, and this challenge was none of these.
Before y’all tell me lighten up girlfriend ... this is just a TV show…let me tell you why my shorts are in such a knot. I have been in the profession for over 25 years, and when I started out it was generally believed if you were not smart enough to go to college or didn’t have anything else to do, you could go to Beauty School and be a Beautician. It took a long time and a lot of reeducation of the public and a lot of hard work from very intelligent hard working people to change that image so that now people like Sally can charge $800 for a haircut .To see these stylists forced to use those types of tools makes a mockery of what has come before. I don’t believe a stylist like Sally, Michael, Rene, or certainly any of your guest judges would be caught dead anywhere near any of those tools and to make the stylists use them was not right either. To be surprised that the results were less than perfect, and all the cuts looked the same is unfair also -- what did you expect? In order to do a good job the proper tools need to be used and the stylists were not supplied with those, I don’t know…I truly hope that if I were put into a situation like that I would say "No, sorry, no can do." I know I have been at many many people’s houses who have said "Hey, I need a haircut, I have scissors " and I have said, "Nope, sorry. "
I guess the bottom line for me it that we as a profession have worked very hard to get away from "kitchen sink" styling and it bothers me that the show would not take this into consideration when planning the challenges .While it may seem clever or funny, truthfully it is not. "Shear genius"?--hardly...this week closer to shear stupidity

Then you FIRED her. She had the only cut I would wear. No offense but you are not living in the real world. We wouldnt wear "your" hair let alone the ones you are picking. It is making us not want to watch the show. I know the challenge was to do a specific cut but you are being hypocritical. You also told a stylist who was TOLD for the challenge to cut hair like their client's picture they brought in that she should have said "I cant do it on you" that wasn't the challenge --- you can't have it both ways.

Sally's cut looks great on Meg - but silly on Sally. And those highlights--reminds me of a "do it yourself at home" attempt. Her stylist really should tell her she just doesn't have the right hair or face shape to pull off that cut...it's more suited to someone with thick hair that has lots of body, and someone with a round face. The judges were right when they suggested the stylists should refuse the client when the look they want just doesn't work for them. Sorry, Sally!

Ms. Sally, Please get over yourself, for hair's sake! Your "signature" Meg Shag is simply the 1970's style slightly changed. In other words, there is little new there.
btw: You resemble the singer Helen Reddy (from the 1970's).

I would venture to say the average viewer goes to the chain salons, spending much less than $100 a cut.

I would love to hear from others who went to the same school. vickyevalentine@yahoo.com A fellow student at the school taught me the "Shag Cut." I did that same cut on many of my customers during the 70's. Back then it looked more like the Jane Fonda shag than the Meg Ryan shag. I cut my own hair in a shag to this day. You can cut it long, middle length or short. Razor scissors are best to use. Sally's version only showed the sectioning and not the actual cutting. I guess she wouldn't want to let millions of viewers learn what she knows, not at $650. a hair cut, Still, only a couple of the contestants got it right after watching her. Shag=wash and wear. As we used to call it. Shag 1970's How to cut it: Start at top crown and pull up a thin section about one inch wide. Depending on desired length cut about 4 inches for short shag, add more length if longer shag is wanted. Bring up another thin section same width, working forward toward bangs. Note: Bring each section to the crown for longer bangs. Next start on another section same width to the right of previous section. Cut thin sections the same way as middle section. Then do another section to the left. About one inch wide. After top is cut. Start on right side and bring up a thin section to the top of head, horizontally, matching with previously cut hair and cut each thin section the same way.
Do the same on the left side. For the back, start near the crown and bring up thin sections horizontally matching with the hair at the crown and then cut each section pulling up to match with crown and cut You can cut the bottom shorter if a shorter version is wanted.
