Here’s a quick list of “Maybes” I’d like to share, pertaining to the now infamous Rocco episode:

Maybe they should have started the “Bee” with easy items then make them progressively harder (like every other contest in the history of contests)? Anyway, this was a fun Quickfire and the Chefs impressed me. I mean, grounded up roasted red bell peppers as a spice? Wow.
Maybe Hung learned something in the Quickfire. He seemed a bit more humble in this Elimination. The typical Hung bravado and swagger were missing. I hope it sticks, because I really want to see what he can do in the kitchen.

Your comment about people needing 3-stars to judge Rocco is way out of line. He chose to go on TV and make an arse out of himself. He made the decision to shill for half a dozen companies. That's going to bring some negativity, especially the way he did it. There's very few (if any) critics out there with 3-stars. There's very few sports writers who were professional players. The same is true with every industry.
You don't need to play the game to have an opinion.

Hello out there in Top Chef Land,
I think the decision to let Sara go was obviously a difficult one for the judges. Having let Joey go the week before I was kindda rooting for the removal of Howie. He has certainly been the perverbial"weight around the neck" of every team challenge he has participated in. when will the judges eleminate him? Oe perhaps the strqtegiy is to have his team mates give him up, or him show himself up through his disruptive team performance? In any case, it is way past the time for Howie to be seriously evaluted. I also think Sara must now step up or she will too fall as will Casy who always seems to have some kind of " on camera" attitude which, disipates in time for her great skills to come forth, but will , I think eventually catch up with her.
Hung, " baby" it's time for you to step up. and Tre, keep up the work you've startaed... you are on a crest so ride it well... you could be a contender!
This show really looks into the human dynamic. How we act and interact. How we all strategize to maximize our own success, or orchestrate our ultimate failures. Bravo - Bravo.
Overall, good luck to all! I'm sorry for all who have fallen except maybe Micah who was proabably a very nice person but who clearly as Hung would say "didn't get the concept". This is the Best of Television!! I hope you win Emmy's for years to come!
God speed and Blessings to All!

Sam I never disagree with you and I will some day come to New York and eat anything you cook BUT I can not respect Chef Rocco after watching him on his Restaurant Show. What a diva! They needed so much help and guidance in his kitchen as well as the front of that restaurant. He never rolled up his sleeves or got his hands dirty. Instead he drags his poor old mother in to work her fingers to the bone while he schmoozed with the customers, ran off to cook book signings and endlessly argued with his buisness partner. He was clueless as to why his poor crew wasn't willing to dedicate their lives to his and his restaurant's care and nurturing. Without some real leadership and hard work in your business even Sir Rocco is doomed. I'm quite sure he walked in the Top Chef studio with a terrible attitude. And he knows how to look nice when the cameras are rolling. Joey should have been professional enough to get past it. But you rock Sam! Personally, I'd look to Mario Batali for my inspiration.

I agree with all you said regarding Rocco. And I too was shocked by Joey's remarks. And while nobody tells it like it is better than Bourdain, I sometimes feel that he may cross the line. Perhaps he feels that he must always write this way in order to please his flock--I mean fans.
Also, the other bloggers who stuck up for Rocco still felt the need to add that they thought Bourdain's rant was hilarious. I am a huge Bourdain fan--having read all his non-fiction books and watched all his TV shows-- but sometimes I feel guilty for being a part of his character assassinations. I just can't see what one's looks have to do with his or her cooking ability or moral character. Poking fun at someone's physical traits is juvenile. OK, we all do it in the comfort of our living rooms, but it just appears so much more vicious in print--where it has the chance to fester and gather moss. Bourdain must know that he has the power to persuade how others think. I just wish he'd put a little more energy into shedding light on the good he sees rather than the ugly.
Thanks for sharing your views without qualifying them.

Read Anthony B. blog to put things in perfect perspective as to why DiSpiritless is an a-hole. To put it simply: the difference in the approach to Reality TV of Rocco vs Tom C. is the akin to the difference of Hell's Kitchen to Top Chef. Rocco endlessly promots his personality and dumbed down food (*schlocky Italian via The Restaurant and frozen food promotion) not the other way around. No-one disputes his talent as a chef ..that's what makes the ceasless profit hawking of his credibilty all the more disappointing. Food first!

Excellent blog again this week, Sam.
The Rocco-hate train perplexes me. If Bourdain wants to call him out, well, that's between them. But for Joey to do it? I don't know... The one thing everyone seems to be able to agree on is that the man can cook. Was his reality show a bit of a train wreck resulting in the loss of his restaurant? Yeah, I guess. So maybe, if this were, say, "Top Restauranteer" or something, then it might be a bit more fair to greet Rocco as a questionable judge.
But if he's there to judge the cooking, and if all are agreed that he's pretty amazing when he sticks to cooking, then I think the ones grousing about his appearance are the ones with the issues - not Rocco.
And, as you stated, I thought he was a pretty terrific guest judge. I liked the fact that he did what he could to convey to Casey and Dale that something was going on with their otherwise pretty good dish. Maybe his hint was too subtle - maybe he could have hinted in a better way. But he tried, within the guidelines of the rules, to help them be more successful.
And I liked the fact that he questioned Tom's position that truffles didn't belong in a Mediterranean dish. He did it in a respectful and quietly assertive way. He wasn't arrogant or pushy about it, but he didn't let Tom walk all over him either.
That, combined with everything else we saw him say and do in THIS show (rather than in any other reality TV show in which he might have taken part) supported his right to be there. Yes, maybe there was behind the scenes stuff we didn't see. But if there was something bitchy going on behind the scenes, I really don't think Bravo would have opted not to use it; Bravo seems to be all about showcasing drama-queen behavior.

I agree with you about Rocco. I am not entirely sure what the expression "sell out" means, but it usually has to do with someone living their life outside of the narrow parameters of someone else's comfort zone. No chef should need Rocco to fall in line in order to validate their own choices. I did, however, want to give Joey a hug. As far as Tre winning two weeks in a row now, I see a new fan-favorite/potential finalist in the making. It is too early to make a prediction in a situation where anything can happen, but one can only hope.

Hi Sam,
I enjoyed your comments herein. I felt the same way about Rocco's manner. He seemed very respectful and kind spirited when addressing the cheftestants. It was refreshing to see him challenge Tom about the truffles, too. Most of the other judges just roll over and play dead, leaving the heavy lifting to Tom.
Regarding Joey thinking Rocco "sold out" - That is pretty funny. Maybe Rocco deserves to earn a living since he was thrown out of his own restaurant by the "Big, Bad Wolf" - Jeffrey Chodorow. I only caught half an episode of the ill fated reality show. It was a disorganized mess. Until that moment I had not even heard of the principals involved. However, I actually felt sorry for the main character Rocco who was being steamrolled by "Mr. Corporate America" Chodorow. Rocco pitches frozen foods - so what!? He is not 3 card Monte - lurking NYC trying to fleece visiting tourists, for crying out loud! btw: when Joey wept (due to his loss) - in was not endearing. It was pathetic. ("The bigger they are, the harder they fall")...
As for Joey's stubbornness - Maybe he keeps pace with Hard-Headed Howie, (the human sweathog). Both Bruisers certainly know how to ignore partners and show that Might makes Right (uh, not really - in the end)... Hopefully, Howie will lose that hidden immunity idol he seems to have, and pack his knives soon.
Thanks again for your observations!

I guess at this stage of the competition, that's what normally happens. Did you guys have one "firecracker" from your season who, after they were eliminated, made you all breathe a sigh of relief and resulted in fewer distractions?

Sam, I've got a question for your next roundup: How are you so positive? I think it's an amazing (and amazingly rare) personality trait. Bitchy criticism comes with the reality TV territory, but sometimes it is just ridiculous. It's easier to be mean, and easier to be judgmental. You, it would seem, manage to find the moral high ground every time. Forget the restaurant, forget the cooking demos, you should go on a self-help tour, "Positivity the Talbot Way".
Next. I'm not sure if all the commenters out there who say things like "gee whiz Sam, I thought you were a right d-bag on the show but I like you now" realize what a backhanded compliment that is. You could probably leave off the part about not liking him and just go with the compliment. I think that could be step 3 in the program.

Well I watched Rocco on the restaurant and anyone who watched his behavior on that show is bound to take any Rocco appearance with a grain of salt. The man wasted millions of dollars (none of it his) and an incredible opportunity. Why? Because he loved attention and wanted to schmooze and pose for pictures while his restaurant fell apart. You can say what you want about Anthony B, but all his comments about Rocco (though harsh) are the absolute truth. The man lost two great restaurants because he cared more about fame than being a chef and managing his restaurants. Wasn't because he was young and dumb because he was well into his late thirties back then. I don't need to have a 3 star restaurant to know that anyone who spends $9000 on 3000 business cards is irresponsible, I don't need to have a 3 star restaurant to know that if the the restaurant is damn near burning to the ground while I'm out posing for pictures the whole night, something is wrong.
The restaurant was a good lesson in what not to do if you're lucky enough to become a celebrity chef. Its a cautionary tale of what vanity can do to you and the dangers of loving fame more than your career.

I am in total agreement on Joey's comments about Rocco. I found the whole situation to be rather tacky. Even if what he said IS true, it just looked kind of weird to air that out at that moment.
In all honesty, for all of his faults that might havecome out on television or whatever, I do have respect for Rocco.
