Amy Winehouse

June 1, 2007

staffpick_winehouse_320x240.jpg

Amy Winehouse is the girl who made rehab, or rather not going to rehab cool. (I’m talking to you, Lindsay, et al.) Songs off the newlywed’s sophomore album Back to Black have been remixed by the likes of Jay-Z and Ghostface, and I still can’t get enough. The British crooner has brought Motown sounds and maybe even beehives back without being cheesy or ungrateful. (Now I'm talking to you Lily Allen and Lady Sovereign.) Check her out on the new covers of both Rolling Stone and Spin magazines, and most likely the Grammys next year. --Monica R.

I hate how people make everything about a fashion contest. So Amy isn't Miss America but she has one of the greatest genuine voices I've heard in *forever*. Ignore what she looks like and listen to her sing.

I think Lilly Allen is extremely cute and talented in her own right, but you can't rival Amy Winehouse's voice. Check out some of the a capella clips on YouTube and you'll change your tune...literally. =)

she was such a SNORE on the MTV music awards. there was a shot of the audience from the stage. rows of people bored, not reacting, legs crossed, not even bobbing heads to the music. cool song, but she's definitely a show you can miss.

Well, I for one am all about some Amy Winehouse. I first saw her "You know I am no good" video on MTV and was smitten with her from the word GO!! I love her style, she is edgy, honest and makes no appology for who she is and really does not seem to care who approves or not. I saw the MTV awards show and I honestly think that the lack of crowd response was due to the fact that she is new to the US music scene and we are so up to our necks into R&B and Hip Hop culture that anything too different from that throws people off. She is not quite Beyonce or Fergie... and is obviously not trying to be, but if pioneers like Jay-Z are sampling her music it will not be long before others will jump on the Winehouse bandwagon. She is like Kid Rock to me when he broke onto the scene with Bawataba ... he was a very different, not the norm compared to what we had seen to that point, we did not know what to think of his style and fusion of all genres of music... now is a global success and has earned the respect and credability as a true talented artist, writer and producer. There are so many un-discovered talents lurking about and I am pleased to see this young woman getting the recognition for her honest, raw talent that she to rightly deserves. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!

I love her music and her look.I heard about her awhile before I listend , and Iam sorry I waited so long. The music is different in a good way.Take away the hair, and war paint and it would still be a great sound.

Amy has it all !! I like Lily but Amy's a great songwriter Sings like her idols Sinatra , Vaughn and Charles She swings, has great range and annunciates like Frank so you don't miss a word. Speaking of "Frank" it's her first albums title and as good if not better than "Back To Black"

I love love love Amy, I heard the remix to "Rehab" first and immediately went out to purchase "Back to Black" and emailed my mother (lives in another state) to check her out also. I'm pushing Amy's CD every chance I get.
