I got to spend the weekend covering Outfest in Los Angeles. And I have to say the best thing about the entire state has to be In-N-Out Burger. I grew up in Nevada, and I recall driving four hours just to get one. News and rumors suggested that there will be one opening in New York City soon. And this worries me almost as much as it excites me. I've been here for six days, and I've been to In-N-Out at least four of those days. I'm getting rounder than i'd like. Which is a shame, because I used to really like these pants. -Zac H.

by the way...out here in Arizona In and Out has the old protien burger ya know (wrapped in lettuce not bread) it's actually pretty good. I don't believe they list their healthy choices on the menu because I found out from a co worker and being diabetic gotta watch those carbs. But again...couple of pounds is not going to hurt you, you'd still be sharp looking. See ya

I LOVE In-N-Out Burger! The best somewhat-fast food in the country...maybe the world. I had read that they do not plan to expand east of where they already exist. I had looked into it because I thought it would be an excellent idea to franchise one of their restaurants. Alas, the last I heard, I would have no such luck. I guess it will just make for even more of a treat for future trips out west. I'm from Michigan, btw.

I just got back two days ago from California.I drove out and when we got to the Arizona-California border we pulled off for gas.The big In and Out burger sign caught my eye.We have White Castle here in the midwest and the way Californians talk about In and Out is the way people talk about White Castle. It was great. The simple menu takes you back at first but you can have it anyway you want-the fries were great too!!

I have the pleasure or curse (depending on your point of view), of living right down the street from an In-N-Out Burger. I have gotten over my addiction but every now and then, the craving takes over and I find myself driving at 8:30 at night to join the other 25 cars in line. I always order my cheeseburger animal style (grilled onions and the special sauce and they do something else different), and my friend recently told me to order the fries animal style. You can feel your arteries clogging, but dayum are they good!

Just so you know...The very first In-N-Out was in Gainesville, Florida (Go Gators!) -- NOT in California -- and is still standing today. When the guy who started Burger King passed through town and had a burger there, he promptly exclaimed, "Now THAT'S a whopper!" Thus the inspiration for BK's now famous burger. In-N-Out is sooooooo much better!

In n Out has a lot of different things that they offer that are not on the menu. Animal style is grilled onions, fried mustard, extra spread and pickles on top of the normal spread, lettuce and tomato. They also do animal fries with spread, grilled onions and cheese. There are alot of other things also, and the reason they don't franchise is because they have been family owned by the snyders since the start.

Thanx, Brittany for providing the full description of the animal style burger. I'm usually too busy shoveling the burger down my trap to notice all of the additional items, but I know that I love it. For those of you who've never tried an animal style burger, try it once. It's a nice change.
I'm on Weight Watchers now (surprise) so my In N Out days are behind me for now. One can still reminisce!

Hey Guys! I’m a British guy who frequently visits CA and I make sure that I have In N Out at least once when I’m out there. It’s been about 7 months since I was in CA and I’m starting to get severe withdrawal symptoms! I’ve even contemplated taking a short trip out to the West Coast just to get myself two 3x3’s every day!! Question for people local to LAX: Why did they stop serving Mr Pibb at this particular restaurant?! I absolutely loved that stuff! I concur about In N Out making the best burgers in the US, and possibly the world. I wish they had them back home! I hope they start appearing in other states! Cheers.

Just had an In-N-Out fix last night, double double animal, of course. I'll have to check out the animal fries next time; I didn't now they did that. In-N-Out is family owned and will not franchise. I believe it's to keep quality control. I'm in the LA area and I read an article in the paper a while ago about how the last of the founders is keeping it strict about not franchising. However, one of the heirs (I believe it's a granddaughter) is waiting for the grandma to pass on so she can take over and start franchising. I'm afraid of what would happen to the quality then. It will be a sad day for all of us if In-N-Out goes the may of McD . . . I can't even say it (shudder).

The bane of Californian parents is that when their teenagers and twenty-somethings get back from exotic locales, instead of asking to go to a steak house (and thereby giving our parents the excuse) we drag our parents to in-n-out. More than a few of my friends carry in-in-out finders in their purses or wallets.
Although only a few combinations have official names (at least officially part of the secret menu), it's possible to order any combination of patty, cheese, vegetables, and bun. When I was in high school one of the guys I knew looked up the whole secret menu online. The next time he went to in-n-out with friends he ordered a flying dutchman to show off. We still figure he didn't really know what he was doing because when we got the order he was surprised to be handed his 'burger' -- two patties and two pieces of cheese.
It's also possible to get protein and veggie burgers (a double-double minus the meat and cheese but with whole grilled onions) as well as any combination of fountain drinks and/or icecreams. Although the Neapolitan is the most famous, root beer floats, arnold palmers, and anything else are possible. The fries can be cooked light or well done, or put into a burger. And it's possible to get a salad (on the sal) made of the usual burger veggies and topped with sauce.

They are great burgers. I live here in L.A. and go there quite often. You need to try there french fries with grilled onions and thousand island dressing and cheese on them. I forget what you call them. They are very good.

I agree with SoCal. Not only is that NOT an In-N-Out burger, it looks like a BigMac. Having been a former In-N-Out employee, I have to say that's a HUGE disgrace! And I'm pretty sure if any state is next, it's Utah, not New York.

In & Out is amazing! A long time ago they used to give out bumper stickers that folks would trim so instead of reading "In & Out Burgers", they appeared as "In & Out urge". It was funny, but now that I live in a state without an In & Out, I'm jonesing big-time! And now I've got the "urge" for an In & Out burger!! Okay, make that a dozen burgers and 6 orders of their fries!!

My wife and have lived in Seattle for the past eleven years and the last time we were down in the San Gabrial Valley to visit family we ate at nearly every In-N-Out we could find on our roadtrip back up the five. My brother (bless his heart) sent us some via a visit by my Mom (pre 9-11 air travel restrictions) and I have to admit that the burgers and fries do not travel well. Although I confess we ate them anyway. They are and were such a memorable part of ones life growing up in Southern California. One of our high school friends even went to the In-N-Out University. We have found several good burger joints up here in Seattle, but my wife and I will always compare them to the standard, that is to us, In-N-Out.

As a chef and a burger fan i got to say in and out is easily one of my favorite spots! Growing up in Oakland the three main cuisines are chinese, mexican, and burgers. Independent burger places as well as chains can be found every two blocks! Even so my friends and i would love to drive to sac or vallejo to get a four by four, animal style(plus protein style for myself, gotta make up for all the meat!) and some lemonade! When they finally opened one in Oakland and Union City it was the biggest piece of gossip since O.J.! Not many people know about the secret menu though, but if you ask they'll be sure to help you out!
