Our mission in life is to prove that comic books aren't just for kids. There are plenty of examples to go by but perhaps the most fitting would be Brian K. Vaughan's brilliant ongoing graphic novel "Y: The Last Man." The premise is apocalyptic: What if all the men in the world suddenly, all at once died? And not just human males but males of every type species on the planet ... dead.
All save two: Escape artist Yorick Brown and his pet monkey. The pair have inexplicably survived the mass holocaust of the Y chromosome and now Yorick, a headstrong son of a congresswoman and English professor, has to come to grips with his status as the "greatest man alive," even if it's strictly by default.
The art won't amaze you at first but as the story breezes along (it reads like water) you understand how important the drawings are to the story and how perfectly captured human expression is being rendered. Mind you this isn't superhero stuff and the content is adult -- very adult in some instances. There are currently 9 volumes of trades available.
Chances are you'll be hearing more from "Y's" author Brian K. Vaughan as well. Last year he began a stint writing on the ABC hit "Lost," penning quite possibly its most enjoyable episode from last season.
*Incidentally, for more on comics, information and opinion, why not check out iFanboy.com and their weekly podcasts.
