Hot Chipotle

August 29, 2007

staffpick_chipotle_320x240.jpg

If you haven’t heard of Chipotle, my question to you is “How’s life on Mars?” Chipotle is the hottest Mexican restaurant on planet earth. I’m talking about real Mexican food where jalapeno is a good thing and where you can top your fajita burrito with carnitas (that’s their seared pork that’s been braised for hours).

But what separates Chipotle from the thousands of Mexican food hot spots is the quality of their food. The restaurant has served more naturally raised meat than any other restaurant in the U.S.

you are absolutely right about chipotle. i eat there at least four times a week, and i adore it. the burrito bowl is amazing and everything is always fresh. hats off to chipotle.( hey, did you know they are owned by mcdonalds?)

chipotle is amazing and contrary to popular belief they were never owned by mcdonald's. in the begining they were going to receive some investments from them , but steve ells the founder of chipotle didn't like the way the plans for chipotle were going so they never became partners in any way.

Short Answer: No, Chipotle is not owned by McDonald's.

Long Answer:
Chipotle became a susidiary of McDonald's in 1999 when McDonald's acquired the controlling stake of the company. At one point, McDonald's owned shares accounting for approximately 87% of the voting power of Chipotle's common stock. In Chipotle's earlier stages, McDonald's helped Chipotle's operations by sharing its own distribution networks.

Currently, Mcdonald's no longer has anything to do with Chipotle Mexican Grill. They have divested completely from Chipotle.

chipotle is not real mexican food. Its not even a restaurant either. Its a fake me out upscale taco bell. It's just another burrito place so americans think it's authentic. Because we all know that the only thing mexicans eat are burritoa. please!

Justin's right. McDonalds used to own Chipotle. I think it became it's own parent company in late 2005-early 2006. Their IPO was amazing that day. I think their stock jumped something like 10-20 points that first week.

Anyways, I've been going here since about 2003 when there was only one in NYC - on 34th st. I used to HATE, HATE, HATE mexican food - thanks to Taco Bell. Now I can't get enough of it. I've tried others (Qdoba). I even make my own chicken nachos at home with sour cream and salsa. But nothing compares to Chipotle.

shannon is sooo right. this place is not good. i suppose i can say that they did have a nice dinning room. food was not even close to the mexican food i grew up on. the rice is nothing but steamed rice with cilantro. it was not an enjoyable meal at all

I've been eating here since 2000 when I was in college! Now that they're finally opening all over the country, including where I live now, I'm in heaven. I love this place.
However, just to respond to the couple of naysayers above, I never ate there for "authentic" mexican food. I ate there because the versions of the burritos they make are delicious, made with fresh ingrediants, and filling. You get a good portion for your money. So what, it's different than a normal burrito...still delicious. So if you are looking for "authentic", this isn't the place for you.

I discovered Chipotle in NY in 2005. My friend and I even went to one in Manhattan right before boarding the plane. It was hilarious we were eating our delicious burrito like that guy in the Wendy's (i think) commercial who's stuffing his face on the plane. I live in South Fla and the moment I got back from NY I got on the website and wrote to them to make more Chipotle's here. They wrote back to let me know that they were working on it and low and behold I now have one about 15 mins away. I'm hoping they make more since I love it so much. I've also discovered Q'Doba (as mentioned above) and they are delicious as well and with more variety. So if you can't find a Chipotle then I recommend looking for a Q'Doba. And, whoever said they're wanting to be authentic Mexican, they just make good food.

I was so pleasantly surprised to find your review/recommendation about Chipotle. We live in Orange, California. Our whole family (5 kids ages 11-21) also feels Chipotle is the very Best mexican restaurant in the World!
My husband has worked for Chipotle for about 7years. (He oversees building of the restaurants all over the western US.) I must say it has been so Amazing to watch the chain grown from a virtual unknown on the west coast to what it is today. It is definitely the freshness standards, and portion sizes that have helped word spread, virtually, without any formal advertising!
Glad to hear you are a fan(atic) too!

PS. It was also fun reading the comments from other fellow Chipotle lovers!

Cissy - are you freakin' kidding me? You live in Cali and you think CHIPOTLE is the best Mexican food you've had??

OMG, get in your car during lunch and just start driving towards downtown LA. Stop at any of the thousands of lunch truck tacquerias and you'll get closer to real Mexican food. Granted, even that is just a tiny sliver of Mexican cuisine, but at least I can go to any number of cheap-as-hell Tacquerias in Cali and get a lengua or cabesa taco or even fresh goat stew on Sundays.

Come on, people. While I don't deny that Chipotle serves food made from quality ingredients and many find it to be quite tasty, it's like saying Panda Express is great authentic Szechuan cuisine because the restaurant is clean, you get to pick your own combo meals, and it tastes good.

I used to work across from a Chipotle and ate there for lunch at least 3 times a week. Chicken burrito bol with the pinto beans, hot salsa, cheese, light on the lettuce, and no sour cream. TO DIE FOR!

Are you serious? Chipotle is certainly tasty, but it is definitely not authentic Mexican food. More of an American-style burrito.

SO WHAT IF CHIPOTLE IS NOT REAL MEXICAN FOOD..DON'T HATE..ITS REAL GOOD AMERICAN-MEXICAN FOOD!! I LOVE THEIR VEGGIE AND BARBACOA TACOS.. I LIVE IN SAN DIEGO.. IF I WANT REAL MEXICAN FOOD I'LL GO TO PALIMINOS (THE BEST MEXICAN JOINT EVER)..BUT IF I WANT SOME FAT BURRITOS AND GOOD QUALITY TACOS, I GO TO CHIPOTLE!! BOTH ARE AWESOME, CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT EITHER.
