And it's Rosie's, too!
We’re not sure who we’re more excited to see premiere today -- Katie Couric on the Evening News or Rosie O’Donnell on the View. To be honest, the hoopla surrounding both hosts (hostesses?) is a little overboard. Especially with Couric. OK, she’s the first woman to “solely” host an evening news program in America. (Yawn.) It’s only a big deal if you point it out. Women are all over the news these days. In fact, we’d hazard to guess there are probably more women on the local news channels than men.
The other big issue seems to be that Couric is a little “light” for the venerable evening news. But that seems to be where news has been going for the past decade: entertainment. The days of network news being the arbiter of the nation's worldview are long gone.
As for Rosie? That’s a bit more interesting to those of us working in the field of pop culture. The View isn’t scripted like the Evening News. Tough-gal Rosie and the prissy Elisabeth Hasselbeck might actually get into some un-scripted scraps about Abortion or Gay Civil Rights. (We hope!)
Will Katie Couric actually get into a catfight with President Bush about Iraq or the declining income of Middle Income Americans on Wednesday’s interview? Probably not. (Dammit.) So in the scheme of things, if news is about what’s really happening in America, we think The View might be the better program. Regardless, we’ll be watching both. We just love debuts! And we can’t wait to see what those ladies will be wearing!
