"Martha" Mizrahi?

September 1, 2006

Is Isaac Mizrahi throwing down the homemade cashmere gauntlet to challenge cx-con Martha Stewart for head style “queen”?

Mizrahi has launched a new magazine called “Isaac’s Style Book.” We don’t know Isaac personally, although one of our former roommates once accidentally outed him to his Great-Aunt. ("It's a long story and everyone cried a little at the end.") We have nothing against him personally. It just seems really chic and hip to write mean things about him lately.

So, we put on our bitter pants and got out our snarky hats, and checked out his site. And, saints be praised, we’re totaling filing this item under “something-really-cool-we-thought-would-be-lame.”

Isaac’s Style Book (online anyway) is witty, helpful, and tres fun! And better yet, Isaac is trying to make a “style book” for everyone. Not just wealthy ladies with lots of time on their hands.

Does anyone else feel intimidated when they watch Martha’s TV show or thumb through her mag? We always think, “What is wrong with us?” while gazing at her Christmas cookies. “Are we so lame and stupid that we want to weep at thought of attempting such domestic magic?”

But not with Isaac. His website offers practical advice, and gears it (mostly) toward regular folks like us. Here is a sample of what Le Mizrahi suggests in the “Notes from Isaac” page.

On what to do with clutter: “Rent a storage facility … Keep everything because you’ll want it someday.”

On dogs: “Mutts are like haute couture, “ he quotes Isabella Rossellini. “Only one exists in the world!”

And on top of all of this he also has a page called “Revamp” dedicated to refurbishing clothes you don’t use anymore. Damn! Isaac where were you last week when we were tossing nearly everything we owned into the dumpster?

Another great thing about the website is it’s very clear and easy (and fun) to navigate. The only thing worse than a cluttered room, is a cluttered website. (We know, we know....) Isaac’s is smart and sharp with a hint of the colors and style of Martha Stewart’s, but Isaac’s hipness and fashion folksiness trumps Martha’s super ridiculous-homemaker-ness. (Enough “ness” for ya?)

Oh, and the most important thing. Isaac’s main theme is to get “real.” He writes:

“Every photograph you see in our pages is unstaged, filled with real people, really getting dressed, really cooking, really performing, and enjoying themselves immensely. No airbrushing in this magazine, no retouched reality. Just people making use of what they have and making mistakes.”

That’s us! We make mistakes all the time! Finally, a website/magazine for people like us! Consider yourself “bookmarked,” Isaac.

Whatever happened to Isaac's talk show on the style network? Has it died? I miss it. Although, should I be talking about that show on a BRAVO website? I hope I haven't just treaded on dangerous ground.

Robert Best, please forgive me, but I love Isaac's web site. However, what would be even better is if you "blogged" about the site on your site!

We want your blog comments! We will read and approve them as soon as we can, but sometimes they can take a little while to show up online. Here are some guidelines:

  1. Keep it clean. You're a Bravo fan, you know better words than most TV audiences.
  2. Avoid using ALL CAPS! (It’s like screaming...)
  3. We don't post e-mail addresses or phone numbers.
  4. Have a good time. We love that you love the blogs.
