Vegetarian Museum

We secretly love Vegetarian food. Call us crazy, but we think it’s not only morally less complicated, but it just tastes better. Although we are not all vegetarians here at Bravotv.com -- some of us still love our burgers and Slim Jims -- we were excited to stumble upon a very cool site called vegetarianmuseum.com.

This is just what the name suggests.

Claiming to be the first of its kind, the museum features special exhibits on different eras in vegetarianism (Who knew? The colonial era, 19th century, early 20th century ....). You can also read about vegetarian folk hero Johnny Appleseed or New York vegetarians circa 1853.

Our favorite thing on the site was the actual New Year’s Eve vegetarian menu from Battlecreek Sanitarium from 1930 which listed things like “Iced Tomato Bouillon” and “Protose loaf -- brown gravy.” Yipes. The Vegetarian Dark Ages, apparently.

Check it out for yourself: vegetarianmuseum.com.

Wow - thanks for that link! Really interesting site. And regarding that menu from the Battlecreek Sanitarium, um... "Acidophilis Buttermilk?" Thank god I'm vegan.

I have reviewed the site that you recommended. I was surprised to find that the arrogance and bizarre fabrications characteristic of some modern day vegetarians was prominent in the writings of vegetarians in the 1930's and beyond. They seem to be willing to present any form of mal-informed gibberish that they think will advance their case that they are morally superior to those who eat meat. They seem very impressed with their own status. If found these old writings not much more respectful or respectable than those on a modern animal rights or vegan website. To me they rate no higher on the spiritual scale than Donald Rumsfeld or Pat Robertson or Rush Limbaugh.......

We want your blog comments! We will read and approve them as soon as we can, but sometimes they can take a little while to show up online. Here are some guidelines:

  1. Keep it clean. You're a Bravo fan, you know better words than most TV audiences.
  2. Avoid using ALL CAPS! (It’s like screaming...)
  3. We don't post e-mail addresses or phone numbers.
  4. Have a good time. We love that you love the blogs.
