According to the New York Times, the US census indicates that 51% of American woman are living without a spouse. In other words: MOST American women are unmarried.

The census also indicates that African American Woman have the most single households, followed by Hispanic, then White, and finally Asian. That’s right. Sisters are doing it for themselves.

So what do these numbers mean for the American single woman? It simply means when all those relatives hassle you at your cousin Rita’s wedding, asking “Why aren’t YOU married yet?” You can simply say “Just part of the majority, Aunt Selma, Everybody’s doing it.”

wow..i am certinally suprised by this, but then again I am not.
I think that most women now days seem marriage a choice, an option, not something they "have to do" like it was 100 years ago. On the plus side of this, I think that women who are unmarried and choose to wait to are setting a healtier example for the younger generations. I myself am 23, and am in no real hurry to get hitched. I would rather finnish my education, and discover myself before I can even think about marriage.
I know that in NYC the median age of marriage is in the 30s, andmost woman in this demographic are professionals. I think that this will definatly cut on divorce rates, and lead to a longer lasting, healthy marriage. I think that more cities should eventuly have statics like these. I think that in the long run getting married later on in life shows a more respect for yourself, your partner and the life you will share. Rushing into such a big decision only leads to disaster...Its ok to be single, there more in life to discover on your own anyways! No one needs someone else to complete them, we are whole people....
So rock on ladies!! Choose your future, dont let it choose you!!!

It is nice to hear this from a 23 year old woman. I am 65 and if i could tell young women anything before they tied the knot, it is learn to live by yourself before you try to live with a guy. And, I really mean alone, not with a roomate or anyone else. You can't really know who you are until that happens.
