Christian Speaks!

March 6, 2008

We at Bravotv.com had the pleasure of speaking with this year's winner of Project Runway, Christian Siriano, about fashion, love, and ... Britney. Enjoy!

Were you surprised that Rami rounded out the final three?
It was kind of obvious to me that Rami would make the final three. If he hadn’t, it wouldn’t have really made sense. The thing is, I was really prepared for Chris’s collection to be so amazing, but when Jillian and I were helping them get their clothes ready to show, I kind of knew. It was obvious. The day of, Jillian and I just kind of helped them get the girls dressed and gave them style ideas, and I felt like Chris was kind of running me around like a slave! I thought it was kind of interesting that Jillian and I had to help our competitors who didn’t make it to the finale. It was very awkward to help the people we were competing against. It was just a weird situation, but I mean, I was there to help. I didn’t sabotage like I wanted to.

Were you surprised that you weren’t asked to complete a 13th look?
Jillian, I don’t know if you saw it, but God, all she talked about was like, “There’s going to be a surprise challenge! There’s going to be a surprise challenge!” I was like, “Ooh! Let’s make three outfits!” The thing is, that’s my game. I can make an outfit in a day. Jillian can’t, so that would have eliminated her. But I knew they wouldn’t do anything like that because there had already been a huge trick with Chris and Rami.

Congratulations Christian!! You are most certainly fierce. I will never be able to afford any of your fashions, but I would wear anything created by Christian Siriano.

Oh my Gawd!!! Christian is the most unique, real, original and independant designer ever on project runway. I was on the edge of my seat during the final episode and screamed with joy when he won! He totally deserves it. i will be following his career with anticipation. I hope he can create some great stuff for all us gals out here! Fierce baby

CONGRATULATIONS!! I fell in love with you from the first time I saw you (during the new cast intro) and I knew that you would win. I think you have the best personality and your outlook on things was always right on and quite positive (eventhough I know the show is edited). I jumped up and down when you were announced as the winner and can't wait to see your future collections.

WAY TO BE FIERCE!

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING! Every piece unwearable by anyone OTHER than Victoria Beckham. The collection was a one note wonder and every piece echoed the look from the Metropolitan Museum challenge. No innovation, no color, no joy. Shame on you all!

Christian - I voted for you and loved you all along! Way to go and CONGRATS! I agree that all of us straight women need a gay and would be proud to have your fashion advice anytime! You deserved this win. I had decided that if Julian won this season that I was done with Project Runway.... was it just me or did anyone else notice that she acted like she was on some serious downers during a lot of the show??? lol She made me depressed! I plan on checking out your myspace page and good luck to you! Have fun on your vacation - you deserve it! Sue, Illinois

Congrats to Christian. Again, I feel the judges missed the boat. While Christian's line was creative it Jillian's was the most feminine and wearable with a high degree of creativity. Happy for Christian who has shampooed my hair in the past, but feel the judges really are wrong here. anita

Christian, I am SO glad that you won- I was rooting for you the whole time! I loved Rami and Jillian as well (I thought this season was by far the strongest out of the history of Project Runway), but you're young and so fun, and you deserved it so much. Even my dad, who is 57 and lived in communist China his entire childhood, could tell that you're talented way beyond your age, and he knows almost nothing about fashion. Maybe I'll buy something of yours one day after I make a lot of money!

Deborah DeFranco wrote:

Gillian should have one. Maybe her calm steady manner wasn't queenly enough for tv promotions, but her designs were magnificent and real. Christian is an annoying child who will never dress real women. Gillian... BRAVO... You are the winnner!

I had a hard time picking out a winner - they all had pluses and minuses. Rami's colors were tragic, I did not like Jillian's knits and Chrisitian was all aroung OTT - the chicken dress could have been beautiful but the proportions were wrong. All in all a gorgeous show but I would wear Jillian's clothes in a heart beat.

It was pretty obvious that Christian was going to win with his over the board creativity and sense of style however Jillian is my personal favorite.. she may not be "fierce" but her designs scream wearability hency marketability... CASH!!! So she may did not end up with the $100 000 price now but she will will end up a household name ...like michael kors himself!!!
I am looking forward in seeing her designs and merchandising in department stores across the country!!!! So hurray for Christian and hurray for Jillian!! Awesome Jobs!!!

Lori wrote:

Very disappointed that Christian won. Both his designs and his attitude are poor. What is the point of being a fashion designer if the clothes are unwearable? He belongs more in a costume show. On the other hand, I thought that Jillian designed for the average woman. Her clothes were sharp, fun, and wearable!!! I will be following her and purchasing her designs.

Christian, Mozaltov on your win.

Just remember one thing.

In short, EDIT that ATTITUDE of yours.

If you don't, you'll be on the way down before you realize it!

I think you are very innovative, as that is key to being a great designer. Hope you show in south beach one of these days. The best to you always,

What a disappointment again! I watched seasons 1 & 2 and became very discouraged and disappointed in the judges. Do they try to pick the winners based on the least wearable designs for the average woman? It would seem that is the main criteria. I skipped season 3 just for that reason and thought I would give it another chance this season. Only to have the judges repeat themselves. They kept talking about Rami with all his draping, but in my opinion it was Christian that came up with variations of the same look. Always in black, skinny pants & big puffy tops. Very little color, very little movement in the clothes and clothes that very few people could actually wear.
All I can say is another disappointing year from the judges. Not sure I will watch next season as I'm fairly sure it will be more of the same. Whoever repeats their designs and uses the most amount of black (least amount of color) will win.

Finally fashion wins. Christian's collection was, by far, the best of the three. Cohesive and high style. I disagree with Nina I think Christian has a stronger point of view than Rami who seemed to use his collection to respond to past criticism and wound up with a hodgepodge. The weaving was beautiful, but where did the olive piece come from? Well done Christian, you are fierce!

I am so disappointed in the outcome of "Project Runway". Again. I love the show, but dont agree with the judges' choice. I feel they need to be more consistent. In previous challenges, they have criticized designers for use of too many ruffles as it added "weight" to the models. And now, they declared as a winner a collection that was almost all volume-adding ruffles?? And what about the outfit with the huge white collar that seemed to be choking the model combined with a hat that hit her face? It was awful. it was too costumey, and in a bad way. If you wanted costume but with class, Chris should have been there. Christian's clothes could only be worn by less than 1% of the population. His collection was depressing, mostly unflattering and overly voluminous. And Victoria Beckham as a judge? How many times has she landed on the worst dressed lists?? No wonder she raved about Christian's collection - she has questionable taste. How sad that 2 other designers that created beautiful clothing that women could actually wear and feel beautful in lost.

Oh man, what a rip. I don't know if I'll ever watch Project Runway again. Christian? get real. Jillian should have won. All Christian knows how to design is costume!!! He doesn't know women, even though he acts like one. Fierce? More whimpy. What in the world are these judges thinking, or are they? They obviously don't know the average woman out here in the real world. I'd wear Jillians clothes every day, I'd only wear Christian's to a Halloween party!!!!

I really enjoyed seeing his softer side at the end of the show. I felt he could be a little harsh at times with the other designers but I always knew his heart was good. You could really tell how much this all ment to him! I love seeing people who deserve it win!

Great job! I look forward to seeing more of his work!!!

I wasn't surprised by any of it as always the judges have picked their favorites and that's the way they will twist the show to to the advantage of whomever they picked in the first week. Sweet pea should have been in the final three with Jillian and Christian because both Romi and Chris failed the last challenge with tired repeat looks and two were supposed to be eliminated. Each season we see talented women who make beautiful clothes that women would love to wear cast aside for some truly bizare looks that would never sell and then we get to listen to Heidi and Nina rave about how advante guard it all is. Christian can't design for anyone but a stick (really "be fierce but don't bend your arms) and and practically everything in Romi's collection had strange drapes and bubbles of fabric around the hips I expected him to start singing I like big butts!

I am so happy for Christian. I feel that those who find him annoying and overly confident, really have the wrong take on him. He just hides any insecurities well-- witness his almost crying when he and Rami were waiting to see who would win. I think he has a great attitude. His model came to the show very late, and he did not go postal over it, he was actually quite gracious to her and just brushed off her being late. Jillian would have freaked over that.

How disappointing! Skinny pants, big poofy tops and everything in black - doesn't seem too creative to me. Where is the creativity everyone is talking about. I saw variations on the same look and always in black - not much imagination for that. I thought that Jillian & Rami at least designed for the average woman. The average woman would not be able to wear the clothes that Christian designed. Another disappointing season of Project Runway and the judges final winner.

I love Chrisitan; he is fiercely entertaining and a very talented, exciting designer. Jillian's clothes were my fave though; I thought she knocked it out of the park. I thought her line was stunning and I loved how the pieces talked to each other, in a way, as they came out one after the other (except for the black and white striped sweater that, as Tim pointed out, did seem out of place.) I liked that you could see her inspiration and variations on a theme throughout. I found every piece chic and original. Christian's were marvelous too, but I agreed with the criticism that it got monotonous. Watching Jillian's show was a more thrilling experience for me.

I am sorry, but Christian's was the typical fashion show we see time and again from the industry. I loved Christian all the way through the season, but must say I was appalled by the ending collection. It is outfit after outfit that neither my friends or I would wear to the hippest function. The collection was strictly an ideal and had no place in the real world unlike his two counterparts. I am very sad to say the I feel Rami or Jillian should of one. At least I could see myself or others wearing them and being fashion forward. I like hip but hip from this era not the 30th century.

Season 4 is nothing if not marred by poor judging... or rather, by judges who have consistently projected virtues on the designers that are not always present in their designs. Case in point here is the finale.. where I think Jillian definitely stepped up and delivered the most complete and interesting collection. Except for the knit outfit, everything else was exciting and cohesive. Christian succumbed to his youth, delivering a few exciting ideas, but falling into repetition and non cohesion. Rami didn't even deserve to be there, having been outclassed by Chris on the last two challenges. I found it insulting that they booted Jilian first. That just made no sense. Thank god Christian won. He's a good designer, and under the witty gay banter he seems like a smart kid.
I thought that Jillian deserved the win because she DELIVERED where it counts... on the runway. But Christian has entranced the judges from day one, and that IMAGE of the hip designer, combined with his excellent design skills... was really what took him to the top. Because, like I said... I think he (overall) fell short in the finale.

I was extremely disappointed that Christian won. He obviously

Jillian's clothes were stunning so were Rami's I would have be very happy if either of them won.

This was my first season of Project Runway, I'm not big on reality shows but I enjoyed this one until the ending. Not sure I will tune in again.

Christian's designs were all about personal ego not about what women could or would wear. He's be a fantastic designer in the theater or in films that are period or Sci-Fi . The model practically fell over in his insane 9 inch shoes, and all of those huge ruffles are reminiscent of pirate
clothes, if he threw a few swords around the models waists I would have thought they were leaving for a period film set.

Ugh..bad disappointing choice. I think Christian's designs have years of work ahead. It's wonderful to get your inspiration from the clouds but then we all have to bring it down into the real world, something his huge ego would not let him do.

In the meantime his designs would make stunning Halloween costumes.

However.......
The judges got it wrong. Nina Garcia had it in for Rami from day one. She is a pinched b-tch and one look at her appearance each week tells any discerning person that she has zero sense of style. I wouldnt let her dress my dog. Kors is just P whipped and Heidi, as producer, just wants dramatic television. V. Beckham a style icon? Please.

Congrats Christian! Living in local Maryland, has made so many people so proud to watch you each week. We have so many young friends who have graduated and some are still attending BSA and Wow... the amount of talent that BSA has had in their classrooms is just amazing. How lucky they were to have you among their alumni. You are a talent well beyond your years which makes you so incredibly unique and gifted. Your future will should and will be beyond your wildest dreams. You deserve it. No one else should have ever won or came close to you. I actually teared up watching the announcement of you winning. God... who cries watching a reality show. But, believe me there were plenty of people crying, cheering and celebrating for you. Phones started ringing all over the state of Maryland once you won. Christian... the world's next famous celebrity. You deserve it more than any young person I have seen in years. You are fierce !!!

I want you to know that I am a High School Art Teacher and your success is an inspiration to both me and my students. I am an artist as well, mainly photography and have always wanted to see a show at Bryant Park during Fashion Week. I am now making it my goal to get to see yours somehow in September!!! Hope to see you and shake your hand, grrrrl. WORK IT!
Cheers,

I'm so disappointed. I wanted Jillian to win all along because she has the right mix of great designs and great attitude.

Question: Do the designers do all of their own sewing? Particularly for the final? The work is SO detailed and there's not really that much time to put the collection together!
GREAT show.

Yes, I thought Christian would win it all also. However, I don't understand why the judges commented on how dark Rami and Chris's clothes were in the judge off show and then they turn around and choose Christian. The first time I saw the photos of his collection I wondered 'Why all the black?'. At least Rami and Chris's black dresses were elegant if not quirky on Chris's part. I thought Christian's designs were cumbersome (would you want to wear that collar and those hats). Yes, Christian is a fabulous designer and he probably will make it big in design but personally I preferred the dresses I saw that Chris designed. Even Sweet P's clothes she had on the runway had some color to them to brighten things up.

congrat... you are talented but I don't think you deserve to win.. your cloth are more costume like.. and most women can't ware it... give me a brake who look like posh??? the normal woman like me and other 60% of women can't wear these cloths.. you are talented.. but I think rami's collection is the best.. and more realistic and fashionable..

OMG -- I am SO disappointed that Christian won -- but it was evident from the beginning. His runway show was so depressing -- thought I was sitting shiva. However, they judges loved him from the get go. As far as the runway show went, Rami won, hands down. The judges are hypocritcal; they gave Chris a difficult time over using real hair and feathers, but Christian's Big Bird dress they loved. Go figure.

Gee, what a surprise - the collection that was the MOST UNWEARABLE to the average woman won - just like Jeffrey's mess last year. Of the 3 collections, I disliked his the most because who the hell can where that crap? Apparently I just don't get it because everyone is just falling over themselves with Christian. Don't get me wrong - I think he's very talented - but I'm interested in clothing that I can actually go out and purchase. I really don't know who else (besides the size zero Ms. Bec
