Tim Doesn't Get It

20080828_tim_320x240.jpg

Katie Holmes isn’t in the big Gunn’s good graces, thanks to the latest fall style trend…baggy jeans.

Tim told People, “[Katie] ascended from this tomboyish waif look to an incredible sexy sophisticate. We realize how much style she’s capable of. I don’t get it.”

While we consider Tim the official, undisputed authority on all things fashion, we’re not hating the new trend. Victoria Beckham, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Reese Witherspoon have all embraced the boyfriend-baggy jeans, but even better, it’s a look us common folk could actually pull off (as soon as we squeeze outta these skinny jeans…)

So, bottom line? If stars are finally sporting clothes we can fit into, and afford, we’re all for it! (But we sort of hate siding with fashion finicky celebs instead of Tim, and he’s right, baggy jeans look somewhat slovenly.)

Tim recently weighed in on another mega-celeb, Miley Cyrus, in OK! Magazine, calling the teen queen's look, "Just a little too tarty." He goes on to say, "If I didn't know better, I'd swear she was 25!"

So, will baggy jeans be making an appearance in your wardrobe? And, what do you think about Miley Cyrus?Totally tarty or completely hearty?

Tim is right...I dont get it, either. We've been stuck in an 'oversized cut' world since the 90s!! Baggy clothes are really tired, and need to be exterminated from the fashion world immediately. Nuff said.

I hate baggy jeans. Who wants their butt to look like it's down by their knees? I agree with Tim. You don't have to be sophisticated 24/7, but looking put together is always a good idea.

I was the Senior Fashion Editor for 17 Mag. for nine years and I spent the last year as a junior apparel design director-so my opinion should count. I love skinny jeans for going out but when I want to be comfortable I wear guy's jeans I bought at Hugo Boss. And yes they are baggy in places but they are lightweight denim and oh so comfortable. And I think they look cool too.
I love the Hannah Montana show-it makes me laugh. But perhaps Miley is getting a little out of hand and her parents should teach her that "everything in moderation" is the way to go.

    Hi

I have a greawt idea for a show theme. I think you should ask the audience to send iin photos of their designs. design photos should randomly be picked by the contestants and then designed by them. This could be so much fun

First of all, Tim Gunn is the fashion guru every girl needs to have as a best friend. I trust his advice absolutely without question. I adore him.
He is absolutely dead on with Katie, where did this look come from? She has always been beautiful and when she came out of her "Joey Potter" cocoon she looked gorgeous and that style, while phenomenal, sometimes aged her beyond her years. I loved the longer hair also, the bob was pretty cute (and cuter on Suri), but this latest hair...looks good on Tom, but she is a sophisticated lady, not her husbands doppelganger.
The jeans, while they do look slovenly, who doesn't love comfortable jeans. They cross all size and gender lines and are probably the most diverse clothing item you can get!
And Miley, don't get me started. Am I the only person in the world that doesn't get this phenomenon?

Thank you Tim for being such an inspiration and to Heidi for having the genius idea of hiring him!!! The show would not be the same without him.

Personally I used to wear big baggy pants and tight shirts until the 10th grade and it was because it was comfortable and wasn't what everyone was wearing so you know what if you can pull it off and feel good about your self then go for it! and as far as the whole hating on it b/c it's like "90's" go suck a lemon you pudding brains!!! that means you must be hating on a lot of current fashion which has taken a 90's retro direction.

Whadddt? We go from skinny jeans to... this? I mean, I'm all for comfort. But those are just slouchy monstrosities. And what's wrong with a nice straight leg jean? My personal favorite will always be the skinny jean, once I started wearing them I couldn't stop. And if you want something not so fitted, why not go with the ultra trendy right-this-minute trouser cut wide leg jeans? I own a pair, and I know I love 'em. They're the trendiest jeans right now.

I'm with Tim on this one. There are stylish and comfortable jeans out there with out going to the gangsta baggy, slovenly look. But these all go in cycles. We'll be back to mom jeans before you know it (I hope not!!!!!!).

i certainly understand where some people are coming from when they say that baggy jeans are comfortable, but are there not other ways to do so? If your not "comfortable" in skin tight jeans, wear a different style. but please, do you have to make it look as if your swimming in denim? There are so many styles of jean out there. boot, straight, wide, ect... and the good thing is that you don't have to skip a meal to look good in them! Yes, you should have a little wiggle room in your jeans, but not to the point where your bum looks like it rests right above the back of your knees!

if still not convinced, read Tim Gunn's book. it gives alot of great tips to people who just need a little shove in the right direction. it'll change your life in the best of ways.

Katie's baggy jeans would be fine they were seen once in a while. Who hasn't thrown on the oversized jeans or oversized shirt in their lifetime. The fact that the jeans have become her daily attire is disappointing.

She is capable of a more interesting look and obviously tries to carry her style out through her daughter.

I don't for once second believe that she's actually wearing Tom's jeans. Not one second. The one picture I've see, the jeans were rolled up at the bottom. Tom is 5'7" and Katie is 6' or something. Men's legs are shorter than women's, in general, so if those are Tom's jeans, then he must be wearing platform sneakers when he wears them, or cuffing them up on the inside, which would mean he's wearing jean kneesocks. Please.
Besides that, I think her look is cute, comfortable, and stylish.

They aren't Tom's jeans. He's like 5 foot 5, and she's 5 foot 9. There would be no way she could wear them pegged if they were Tom's.

I don't mind a looser fit of jeans, but baggy jeans (ESPECIALLY with that heinous rolled cuff!) are just wrong. They are not flattering on any figure, they give you a sausage-leg look... And if you're any size after a 6, they WILL make you look fat. Fine for slumming around the house or maybe for a quick stop at a Wal-Mart (if you swing that way), but definitely not for a real outting.

And Miley Cyrus... Meh. So over her, in every way.

tim is correcto! baggy jeans are out and dated and tired, jeans always look better when there worn correctly. i guess if u like the prison jail ghetto gangsta, i have no fashion sense look then it's for u. this dumbing down in hip-hop fashion really should change or they should out grow it cause every one else has moved on.

I cannot stand the oversized pants, i was actually looking through elle magazine one day last week and i saw a spread where they were on a model, and i just think the whole concept is just blah. I'm all for the plaid grungy look coming back in for fall, but the oversized pants coming back in? no? maybe for lounging around the house or something like that but not for going out in public you want to show off your assets when you go out and how can you do that with baggy jeans on? As for Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana whatever you wish to call her she's worse than "tarty" she's beyond that. she dresses way too old for her age and she seriously can't sing either! So i really don't know why so many people are obsessed with her.

Just give me a pair of bootcut or straight leg jeans and a nice pair of boots. May not be the latest trend, but that's what looks best on me and that's what I am sticking with!

I can say this is one trend I could care less to ever see. While I agree it's great to have a looser cut pair of denim in your closet, the whole pegging the bottom of the leg thing is horrific! Are geometric, neon-colored sweaters next? Let's not forget the white Keds with the matching socks! These kind of jeans only look decent on tall, slender-framed women who wear fitted shirts. Even then, I think they would still look much better in a more fitted jean.

Love baggy jeans. I'm so glad that tight, skinny, and short are on the way out! I'm in highschool and have resorted to wearing boy's cargo and denim shorts because they're so comfy. Now I can have girls pants that I like too! The only question is: Do they have decent-sized pockets?

And Miley Cyrus: It's the Disney Channel look. They all do that: Wizards of Waverly Place, Suite Life, "The Jo Bros" etc. etc. It's called "put on as many layers as you can, then add one more, and add 3 outfit's worth of accessories"

It may sound crazy-but-here goes-I think woman were a lot more comfortable and liberated when they wore beautiful one piece dresses. Kind of like in Biblical times. Beautiful woven fabric enhanced the female silhoutte(hiding figure flaws) while providing ease of movement and, of course, illuminated her eyes and smile. Well, blue jeans work better when one is riding a horse, skiing,or motor cycling. Can we do both?

I think Tim is right on. I know that if I am dressed nicely, I do better at work, When I am around the house, I wear comfortable clothes including jeans. The only time I wore baggy jeans was when I was pregnant. My biggest problem is that most designers think we are all pencil thin or we are all big as barrels. What happen to clothes being tailored to fit a differed size women.
When I was in high school I loved a blue dress with a low white collar. I thought it looked great on me. When I saw a woman who was 40 years older and much heaver wearing the same dress, it looked ridiculous. I didn't wear that dress much after that.
I would love to see a challenges where the designers design a dress for a professional women over 40 and a small size women who have a slight weight problem.

as a fan of form fitting jeans, although a sometimes wearer of baggy jeans, more power to katie holmes for wearing what she feels good in. i just don't understand why she continues to wear the same one pair of pants over and over again! they are obviously the same pants and it seems as though if she can buy victoria beckham a birkin bag, she can afford 2 pairs of baggy jeans!

as for miley cyrus, we wonder what is wrong with our young girls! posing with her creepy dad in strangely provocative photos might be one place to start examining how we raise our young girls.

I love Project Runway and I really love watching episodes back to back. I think LeAnn deserves to win this year. She has good taste and her clothes have real class. I think she has real class and will go far as a designer. I'm pulling for you LeAnn. I'm so glad LeAnn won two in a row and with ammunity too. You go girl!
Danny deserved to go home he thought he deserved it more then eveyone else. All the designers are working hard they are all great. It's a good competition this year. It was nice to see Laura again. Project Runway should do a follow up on the "previous years' desginers so we can see what they are up to. It would be fun to see what they have accomplished since their appearances on the show.
